All in One brewing systems like the Grainfather, Mash & Boil, Robobrew, DigiMash, Anvil Foundry and the list goes on... have all come a long ways and are only getting better each year but the chillers they come with are not even close to what Jaded Brewing's Scylla can do for you.

If you don't own a Jaded Brewing Scylla immersion chiller, you need to watch this video and my other Jaded Brewing Video • Ultimate Scylla Immers...
My only mistake in buying a Jaded Brewing Scylla immersion chiller is not buying one sooner.
The Jaded Brewing Scylla immersion chiller is essentially 3 - 25' copper immersion chillers in one.
Equipment Discussed in this video:

Got a Hydra on the way! Moving away from my plate chiller after seeing some horrible stuff come out even after I rinsed with hot PBW. I talked with Clay for a while to find out which one is best for my system. I'm getting a new version of the Hydra called the Concentric Hydra that is only 5" tall. Can't wait to try it out!

You'll love it. The products they put together are very nice quality but where they really shine is in the performance. Listening to Clay you can tell they did a lot of research before just building a bunch of immersion chillers and it shows. You'll probably me like me and want to kick yourself for not buying one sooner.

I ended up using the SS chiller from my anvil to push my tap water temp down. I go from the tap into the SS anvil chiller, then into my jaded chiller which is in the brew vessel, into the sink. I put the SS chiller into a bucket of cold water and submerge a frozen 2 liter bottle into the middle of the chiller and pack blue ice around it. Finally, I use an old aquarium pump to move the water around in the bucket. I can chill my 5 gallon batches in less than 5 minutes that way.

Sounds like goal achieved! I'm guessing you don't live in one of the Northern states like so many people do with ice cold tap water. I'm kind of happy we don't have ice water tap being in Florida as showers are cold enough during hurricane power outages and ice cold water would only make it a lot worse.

Nice, I just wished I n had realized how much of my life I had wasted with the mediocre chillers that have been included in these all-in-ones much sooner.

Have you tried method 3 and reclaiming the 212-95 water runoff for cleaning? Back to low/no water waste.

I considered it at my old house, but I would probably use most of that water for other things. I have considered using the water for cooling the beer, for other things afterwards, like watering plants and such. In my old house, I used a lot of my waste water from cooling to water the grass and the just over 100 pepper plants I had from time to time.

I know this video is a little older, but I just got my first 10.5 Foundry and I'm curious as to the footprint of the chiller. Will it fit inside the 10.5 Foundry with the whirlpool arm? I don't see how a trub cone can form with the coils so close together.
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing 9 ай бұрын
It should fit, as I have plenty of room with my Jaded Scylla in there. As for trying to create a cone, it could reduce the total amount of trub into the center, but nothing to have major concerns over. The chilling speed of the Scylla will way outweigh any trub that gets into the fermenter (and any trub that does get into your fermenter will fall out of suspension during fermentation). The whirlpool arm makes whirlpooling a lot less work but don't worry too much about the trub unless you are tossing in a ton of loose hops,. that could help reduce the haze and possibly the grassiness (based on how much hop matter is added) of the finished beer considerably.

What kind is it? The scylla can be used with a recirculation pump which allows it to use very little water and still chill a 5 gallon batch down crazy fast and even ale pitching temps in about 5 minutes.

Would you recommend the scylla or the the mantis for 3 gallon batches on Anvil Foundry 6.5 with kitchen sink faucet as water source
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay as I meat to reply earlier but forgot. If you don't plan to move to a larger system (or even if you do but plan to keep your 6.5 system) I'd go with the Mantis without question. I feel the Mantis is designed to do a better job with smaller batches. I'd expect it to out perform a Scylla on small batches as the Scylla would stick out a bit, not allowing you to fully utilize all of the cooper for chilling. As for the kitchen tap water, even in Florida where our water is a bit warm, it does a great job. If you live somewhere in a higher elevation where your tap water is very cool, it will do an eve more amazing job. Thank You and let me know how it goes. jadedbrewing.com/products/mantis?variant=14944616391?aff=30

Nice video, I get your criticism of counter flow chillers, but mine works so well...
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing 4 жыл бұрын
I am assuming you purchased a nice high end unit vs what comes with the Grainfather and have low temp tap water? Don't get me wrong the one with the Grainfather is really nice looking but as you may see on Reddit according to grainfather owners and I would fully agree it can take a really long time if recirculating. If you are using it correctly and simply running the wort into your fermenter with tap water as warm as I have here in Florida we might as well throw the beer in a cube aka "No Chill" and wait 24 hrs. I love Florida but sometimes I wish I was living in the mountains with ice cold water from the tap.

I used to live in Fl, and that is where I learned to brew. I have since moved up north and have much lower temp tap water :) but I totally get your point there. With my counter flow chiller, I get to 65 quicklyish as I transfer. I also do lots of lagers, so cold is good!

One thing I wonder.. if you're using a Scylla and a hop spider in the smaller all in ones like the granfather, can both fit in the unit?
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing 3 жыл бұрын
Technically no. The reason I say that is that I could put the hop spider in the middle of the Scylla easily but the coils are big enough that they are relatively close to the top of a 5 gallon batch, effectively pushing the majority of the hop spider out of the wort. I usually drop my Scylla (when it is pre-cleaned with hot water and Star San) at minute 0 without issues but if I know I want to chill and keep all or some of the hops in contact with the wort throughout the majority of the cooling I will put the hops in a hop bag instead. Also when doing a whirlpool which I actually prefer to do it at 140F (a bit lower than most people) I have to pull the Scylla out but I just set it in a pot for a bit. Check out this video where I did 16 oz of hops with the last 4 oz being in the 140 F whirlpool with the Jaded Scylla submerged without issues. You do have to be careful and have a whirlpooling paddle like what I was using as mine is narrow enough to fit in. $15 mortar / paint stirrer from Home Depot, Lowe's or even Amazon. amzn.to/3f8C8af Amazon is a bit more right now and my Home Depot is listing it at $9.75

Northern brewer makes a copperhead immersion chiller for $80. Mine gets below 70F in about 8 minutes with me gently stirring it. It would probably be lower if I had a legit wort pump. Does it justify the extra cost using so much copper?
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the copperhead but honestly I am so beyond impressed with the Scylla (technically a 3-in-one) immersion chiller it will take some time for me to consider anything else. It does an amazing job even with the warm tap water here in Florida.

@@BitterRealityBrewing no room for hop spider😱🤦🏻‍♂️
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
@@packattack2893 My hop spider fits right in the middle of the chiller if I really need to keep it in as I add the chiller at 0 minutes most of the time unless it got dusty and I didn't pre-clean it (minus rinsing of course) and then it goes in for the full last 5 minutes. I also use a hop bag when it isn't an IPA that doesn't have a bunch of hop additions. Either way get what works for you but I was floored at how effective this thing is and can't brew without it unless I am doing a 1 gallon BIAB batch of course. 😀 I've also put the chiller in and pulled it right back out to do 150F whirlpools which seem to work better for me if they are long whirlpools compared to at flame out temps from 212.

@@BitterRealityBrewing what kind of hop spider do you have?
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
@@packattack2893 So was multi-tasking with work but then you got me thinking so I glanced at an old video and ran down stairs to take some photos. I can share them through IMGUR if you would like or you can email me - Mike (at) Bitterrealitybrewing.com and I can send them to you. So the hop spiders I prefer to use are 14" tall and 6" wide and I was wrong they don't fit in the hole but the video reminded me as I simply pull the hop spider up, drop the scylla in, and then put the hop spider back in as it literally sits on top of the scylla at that point. I also use a large metal paint stirrer with a drill that does fit inside the scylla when doing whirlpools. Let me know and I can share the photos if needed. It is in an Anvil as I sold off my 2 Grainfathers so I don't have those on hand to use as an example. The only issue that I am aware of with the Grainfather which there is a like issue with the Anvil is not knocking your filter off on the older models when lowering the scylla. On the Anvil you have to avoid hitting the spigot inside spout which is minor if you do tap it.
