This is a great video. Thanks. I am still working on arm speed and am definitely still forehand dominant in my play as a lefty. I push 270s to 290s on my backhand, and I still struggle putting all the pieces together smoothly to get 300+ plus distance with any kind of regularity on my backhand. There have been rare occasions on my forehand when I have gotten some discs (usually overstable with a slight anhyser) to carry 320+. This has only ever happened in practice and it is usually anyone's guess which direction the disc is going to take after release. I play mostly on somewhat shorter courses, so my go-to disc for these situations is the my Wraith at 170 grams. It is easily my most trusted disc for all the reasons you mention. On a hunch I bought a 160 gram Lat. 64 Jade last summer before I flew overseas where I work, and I have been astonished at how far I can throw this disc. I hadn't thought of myself as an overly light disc thrower, but this disc carries wonderfully for me on forehand and is decent on my backhand. I have better control with it as well. The main issue is wind. If it is gusty, the disc gets affected much more than my trusty Wraith. I only have the Wraiths in my bag in Star plastic, so I am really curious what the Halo might be like. Anyway, thanks for a great video.

What you said at the end about plastic type is really important. My favorite driver used to be a beat-in destroyer in one of the cheaper plastics. I could reliably laser it down long tunnels and even get a little bit of turn on it both forehand and backhand. When I lost that one, I replaced it with a star plastic destroyer thinking that it was a good investment for durability's sake. It turned out to be a big mistake - it's a constant struggle to even get that one to stay flat for a little bit, and turning it is out of the question with my arm speed. I now rely on my Nuke SS to do what my old destroyer used to be able to do, and only pull out the star destroyer when I have wind to contend with. TL;DR - plastic type is important.

A friend of mine invited me to try out disc golf back in 2009. We met while playing ultimate frisbee at a local park. He gave me my first disc and told me what to look for when I went to buy a few more. The disc he gave me was a dx wraith that was lightly used. It ended up being a great disc for me off the tee about a month into playing. I wish I still had my original disc, but it ended up in a water hazard that was too deep for recovery. I still bag a wraith to this day for the sentimental value.

Fantastic video! I really like this analysis. I currently am bagging 2 Wraiths and 4 Destroyers, and all of them get a TON of mileage. I am very similar to you, where I tend to stick to my Destroyers for forehands. For me, I don't notice as much of a difference in flight, I tend to get more natural turn out of my Star Wraith and I get more glide & stability out of my Halo Wraith (although 1 of my Destroyers is about the same in stability). But the differences are pretty marginal. For me, it's 100% feel. I generally prefer the comfort of Destroyers to Wraiths (I have smallish palms but long fingers), especially on forehand throws. But due to my backhand being weaker and less consistent than my forehand, I usually always reach for the Wraith or another disc for a backhand distance drive. Overall though, if I was stuck with only 1 of them I doubt my play would change too much. From the experience I have forehanding both my Wraiths, I tend to get less distance, so that could come into play I suppose. It's pretty marginal though.

G-star Wraith and Enigma fly very similar. Then the Wave seemed like a slightly more understable wraith. And then the Devy seemed to slide in right in between the G-star wraith and the Halo wraith. As someone who has yet to ace (I keep chaining out), one of the closest I have gotten in a tournament is with that halo wraith. I was throwing into a headwind onto an island hole. @@JustDisc for sure and honestly when I'm working with my friends if you can't get a full flight out of your max distance driver it is too much disc for your arm. So many people think that higher speed discs will get your a further drive and will fly faster, which is true to a point but what that number really means is how hard/fast you have to throw that disc to get the disc to fly like the noted flight numbers. I personally can full flight a destroyer and throw close to 500ft but most of my friends struggle to throw over 350 and giving them slower discs or less stable discs like a Valkyrie, Katana or Shryke have really helped their game and added distance.

I know the numbers are the same except the 12 speed for the Destroyer, but the Destroyer always hyzers out way early for me even when I put a ton of arm speed on it. Wraith is my go to driver, usually have 3-4 rotating. Also like having a range of weights on them, the 160g is more like a -2 for me compared to my 175g, which I use for stronger headwinds. Still like the destroyer for shots that require a lot of turn, and find it more reliable with flex forearms shots.
@JustDisc2 жыл бұрын
Not being able to throw the Destroyer properly usually from a lack of speed or form. Don't be discouraged by this, as it's not a disc most players should use. Usually, the best time to whip out the destroyer is when it's very windy and the Wraith just won't cut it. Try throwing the destroyer into a headwind and watch it flatten out! I can put my full power into it and get a good flight path, and on the forehand I do well also. I can get the Wraith to flex out whereas when I throw a Mako3 (which everyone says is a super easy disc for learning DG) I think I might be over throwing it. Any idea which one would typically get best distance? I can get maybe 420 ft on my best back hand drives, but typically in the 350+ range.
@JustDisc4 жыл бұрын
The Wraith is suppose to give the most overall distance, considering it’s an 11 speed and the others are a 10 and a 9. For you, it all depends on how you throw. If your telling me you get more distance with the Valkyrie, you could probably throw the beast, which is a great disc. It also depends on the weight and plastic you like to use. For instance you could get the wraith, but you would probably need to get it in a lighter weight, like 168. And if you get it in a softer plastic, like the dx, it will be easier to throw than something like the champion.

i'm gonna check out the star wraith and see how it flies compared to the neo plastic enigma which is my current work-horse, anyone got thoughst do let me know.

Let us know how your comparison goes! 👍
@funkybob77722 жыл бұрын
i checked it out and without going in at length, destroyer most OS, enigma stable but yet hyzer-flippable and the wraith had a very noticable turn, meaning i won't gain extra distance from it probs. i did like shot shaping forehands with the wraith though.

Thoughts on the Wraith vs the Krait?
@JustDisc3 жыл бұрын
I had a champion Krait and used it quite a bit for mainly forehands. It was actually quite overstable for my skill at the time. It was the first distance driver that I learned to forehand well! For my backhands, it never flew as far as I thought it should. In the end, I ended up losing it but never replaced it since finding the Wraith. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad disc though!

@@RaabStephan yeah it might not be! Great discs to hold onto though as you get better 👍. And just an FYI, weight is also a big factor. Those discs in max weight will definitely be a bit harder to throw (i.e 175 grams). I throw wraith between 171-173 grams
@brendanwhite54823 жыл бұрын
If I am turning over my wraiths to much during max distance drives, should I try bumping up to the destroyer or work on controlling my wraith? When i can get it right the wraith flies forever but in the wind or when I want to throw really hard I have I hard time controlling it.
@JustDisc3 жыл бұрын
Great question! On windy days, go for the destroyer to avoid being too affected by the wind. As for overturning your wraiths, you can always play with the weight and plastic if you haven’t already. Maybe get it in a more premium plastic (i.e champion) and/or a higher weight. Hope this helps Brendan! 👍

The wraith is legit! I bag 2 of them... which reminds me because my main driver wraith is getting too beat in... gonna need to pick up a new one.

@@JustDisc I bag a champion 175g and a star 169g wraith. The champion will get a little less turn and a quicker fade. I like the champ for big hyzer type shots and the star for more stable to anny shots or max distance....most times but they are versatile.

Makes sense! I’ve never tried a champion wraith, but I’m sure it would help make it more overstable. Do you use/own destroyers?
@mlghardscopeftw4193 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty new to discgolf but I can throw pretty far. I got a star destroyer basically just for having one and can’t really throw it backhand. Don’t have a wraith but what I have is a discmania evolution Enigma which feels like how you discribed the wraith. Are they in any way similar or should I pick up a wraith too?
@JustDisc3 жыл бұрын
Hey MLG, I apologize for getting back to you so late. Honestly, if you are new, I would just stick to the Enigma and Destroyer until you learn to throw them well. The Enigma does seem similar to the Wraith, but it also depends on the plastic and the weight that you buy. Do you have any slower speed discs?
@mlghardscopeftw4193 жыл бұрын
@@JustDisc Didn’t expect an answer so this is very appreciated! Since I posted my comment I got myself a wraith and also got good enough to throw my star destroyer. My enigma on the other hand got too understable for me so i primarly use it for max distance, hyzer flips and general far throws to the right. The star wraith i got feels almost the same as the destroyer, however it is a tad bit more understable!

did you know the "speed" rating is actually "rim width - 10mms?" at least that's how Innova used to define it and other companies have deviated but that's where it started. for example - 2.1cm is speed 11. 2.2cm is speed 12. 1.9cm is speed 9.

I have a dx destroyer 167 and was a straight up under-stable roller disc, fresh out of the box. I also have a McBeth 4 time star destroyer at 172 with a flat top and Ill be damned if i get any turn out of it, super stable. Your best bet is to learn about the parting line of a disc and take into account disc weight and its dome when looking in the store. This will help a lot to find the disc your looking for and you’ll be less surprised the first time you send it on the course.

Realistically most people should throw a valkyrie. Even as someone who can throw 450ft, discs like the sheriff and other 13 speeds go farther but aren't worth the loss of control. The destroyer in 160-165 even brand new gets decent turn and bombs but has that control.
