It does work! When I started studying maths, I came from the typical 'I'm not a maths person' mindset. Finally, something in me switched, and I thought, 'No, I WILL become a maths person!' So, every day, I psych myself up and hype myself up to this mindset of 'I can understand even the most complex maths problems and concepts!' Kind of like a self-fulfilling prophecy. That hype makes me determined, and I study probably 5 hours a day on average. And it works! I have a 97% in my maths courses! Will I one day hit a ceiling? Perhaps... but until then, I will keep hyping myself up and believing in myself!

For Christmas, I asked my family to buy me only math books from your video on becoming a wizard and some others I found online. I've always hated structured classes, but I love thinking and researching math and science on my own. So those books are gonna serve as a test for if I'm actually thinking mathematically or just stroking my ego this whole time haha. It's reassuring to see this video because I have really unrealistic goals in multiple fields I have no formal education in. I'm also young enough that I haven't suffered any big failures, so in all likelihood, I'm just arrogant. It'll be fun to try though :)

I was at a pub in Boston one night drinking by myself instead of socializing again and pondering my direction. I just turned 21 and could not get a fafsa college loan so it seemed like a course here and there would have to do. I was talking to the bartender about goals and what not when I noticed a flyer for a speed math course. It said something like 'Start with the basics - All the way up to Algebra - Find where you need to focus'. I told the bartender I figured it out! I'm going to solve all the math! I did not drink often but I was ready to be sober if needed. Long story short I did not solve all the math hahaha. But I did find new confidence in things I never knew I could achieve even if it was a short lived victory. I could say fraction conversions were what I needed to learn so I printed out fraction to decimal study cards and taped them to my desk so I saw them every day.

My unrealistic goal is to study calculus 3, ODE, and PDE even though the highest math required for my computer science degree is calculus 2 and linear algebra. That’s because I want to specialize in computer speech recognition, which requires me to be able to do a Fourier transform, which needs PDE.

My math education was, and still, filled with gaps. Like many of us here, I started picking math back up thanks to this channel. I've had to start with college algebra on Kahn Academy to give some sense of where I'm at. That said, I'm a programmer and am currently building a speech recognition system without any libraries except the C++ standard library so that I can more deeply understand the concepts. It took about 3 days, but I was able to develop an intuition around the contiuous fourier transform, and eventually, the fast fourier transform well enough to go and implement it myself. So don't make the mistake of thinking you have to understand advanced mathematics to understand the fourier transform, especially not if you have some programming intuition to rely on.

I absolutely agree with this take. Since I was in high school I said I wanted to be a scientist. It took longer than most people but I am now at PhD candidacy😊 now I want to become a structural biologist which is waaaay unrealistic since I don’t have strong calculus but I am starting to polish my calculus to get as close as I can. There is no way we ever have anything figured out. Even Nobel price winners have said how they struggled for such a long time thinking they would never be able to be successful in their careers. Thank you for making me feel a bit better about this weird obsession about unrealistic goals🤣

People in my circle think I’m ambitious but I am not. I grew up with huge ambitions because it was the only way to have a reason to live or would make my life worth it. Now that I know my dreams are impossible, every aspect of my life is failure. But at the same time, it’s nice that I don’t have to have a huge ambitious dream just to be able to take my next breath.

This may sound quite peculiar, but if you ever plan on visiting Turkey, especially Istanbul, I would be delighted to assist with anything and especially treat you to the riches of Turkish cuisine and guide you around. I have been gradually spiraling out of control over the last few years, feeling completely lost despite being somewhat well-versed in knowledge. I am a law graduate with a seemingly failing Ph.D., and with each passing year, life seems more and more meaningless, even though I have always felt like I knew what I was supposed to do. Your simple yet profound reminders in the video resonated deeply with me, and I hope that as I reclaim my ambitious goals once again, I can emerge from this bottomless pit. You have my gratitude.

00:57 🚧 Embrace the perspective that plans may change, and it's better not to be overly attached to a rigid, fixed path in life. 01:38 🤐 Avoid putting unnecessary restrictions on yourself by thinking you have it all figured out; staying fluid in life allows for adaptability and growth. 02:50 🌍 Life often takes unexpected turns, and plans may lead you somewhere different; be open to change and new opportunities. 03:18 🎯 Set a big, almost unrealistic goal to provide motivation and direction in life; it serves as a driving force during challenges and uncertainties. 04:28 🌟 Luck comes through hard work; having a big goal ensures you're striving for something significant, contributing to a fulfilling life. 05:52 📝 Write down your big life goals to give them clarity; focus on the details through research and daily efforts to achieve those goals. 06:59 💪 Work towards unrealistic goals; aiming high increases the likelihood of achieving remarkable things and pushing personal boundaries. 08:07 🤔 It's okay not to have everything figured out; having unrealistic goals is a positive and motivating aspect of personal growth and achievement.

this video is digital gold. I can't believe I was so normal all along. i made several of the mistakes that you mentioned by just 1:40 and I was under the impression I am facing a unique challenge in life. So I never imagined I can share my problems with anyone and seek help. I never thorough what I was feeling can be felt by someone else so I didn't know how to convey what I felt and get an opinion from someone who has been in my shoes. thinking you have it figured and having the stubbornness to pull through every aspect of it in every aspect of life has screwed me spectacularly. I'm just a kid. I say this as a 21 year old. I tried to be an adult too soon, now I have my share of "childhood" to life. Like if you put on your shoes before your socks, you gonna have to remove your shoes (lost progress) put your socks on and only then put your shoes on again. I need to think like a child again to then mature, organically.

Marked grandiosity. I’m kidding. I really appreciate this and it’s relevant to my life right now. I’m a non-traditional student (35) and just started grad school. Have aspirations of being a professor, a researcher. There’s far more to it than that, but that’s the gist. Having that goal in background structures my entire day, giving each activity or time-investment so much meaning, causing me to constantly evaluate what it is I’m doing. It’s rewarding. Sorry for the long-windedness of this. Really appreciate this message.

I noticed that one of the big reasons I couldn't get motivated was that my goals were too "realistic", full of mediocre compromises, with the main goal of living comfortably. The brain just doesn't want to trade current comfort for only future comfort. Ambition justifies all pain and effort; lack of ambition crushes the soul. Yukio Mishima said something like "the strange things about humans is that we can only be happy when we give our 100% to something beyond ourselves".

Believing you have it all figured out only hinders your learning experience. You've accepted that you figured it all out, and that there is nothing else to figure out for yourself. You had to learn to get to this belief, and believing you have it all figured out only shows how much there is left for you to learn.

I have a way of classifying thoughts into three categories. The three categories pertain to our attachment and investment in the outcome (emotionally). +1 is very attached. 0 is confident and partly attached (basically neutral). -1 is completely unattached. The corresponding factors that being more attached to the thought being a fact and relevant versus not being attached are these: The more invested, the more suffering, and the more likely it is to be false, and limiting. It's most accurate to say that we don't know, and that's okay. I don't have unrealistic goals, I have daily habits that I improve to take me great distances one step at a time. Easy.

Just throwing this out there in case it's useful for anyone. As someone who has often dreamed big but felt stuck in place, I've found this book informative: How We Change: (And Ten Reasons Why We Don't) - Ross Ellenhorn. Maybe I didn't feel connected to every reason or conclusion, but it was more useful than trying to tweak my strategy such as with "Atomic Habits." If there's something fundamental stopping you, it's nice to be able to get at that better.

I am a Student that just entered second year of my med school. I love medical science and i have always wanted to be a surgeon. But I also love Physics, however for the longest time i have had a hard time understanding math soo i found it very difficult. i used to be very good at math until grade 4 but as i stepped the ladder of school i found math very difficult to approach until i fell out of interest. i thought math is just stupid and it has no use in life. But i have always been a science fanatic, i love physics and chemistry and biology, my second choice of future was being a physicist after being a doctor. and it was very recently with the free time i got in between our own studies i started reading books from Richard Feynman and reading about alot of quantum and relativity related stuff that i realized that the problem for me was that math wasn't really difficult. its cause i had very little knowledge and understanding of the basics. My whole school life i had spent learning all these complicated (for me at that time i know those are very elementary equations now) formulae and equations without understanding the basic idea of what and why and how these formulae came to be. i was in literary sense memorizing a book without knowing knowing English language and its basic, like yeah i did went by in math and got a B in o levels but that was it. Soo i went off on a whole research on where to start math and it made me even more confused with the amount of math and mathematical fields there are. and then i found your channel. it to me as a math newbie is a treasure trove. it made me feel finally that i too can learn and start my journey in the vast lands of mathematics. i have watched in the past 4 days soo many of your videos and gotten quite a few books that you recommend for level 1 math. and through sheer will i will spend my next 4 year in med school to get as far in math as i can in self study and self learning. and i really mean from the bottom of my heart Thank you for your amazing content and your treasure trope of motivation and help in where to begin i really really appreciate it and i cannot verbalize how much i am grateful to you and the work you have done.

This is excellent. I've long used this technique as motivation. A grand plan that will surely come to pass, and when things go wrong, it's just a setback on the road to ultimate glory.

Maths is so much effing better than any subject ever. I understand what you saying. I went deep into maths and while digging too much into fractals, godel escher bach, quantum, gaia theory and chaos theory during 2010 , my perception of the entire world changed and it never went back to normal ever. It has changed me to the core, but people think im crazy but they can comprehend the logic that i bring on the table. Maths and philosoohy are actually one

A past landlord told me the same thing. "Landlord" sounds uninteresting, but he's interesting for me because his apartments are in a prestigious part of my city (Nairobi, Kenya) and his son is a studious guy my age with impressive academic achievements. We spoke about goals because I told him I'll not achieve my goals with the kind of tenants he has in his place (lol), as I terminated my contract with him. But we had some camaraderie and the last thing he told me is to dream very big. I'm yet to internalize what this means in a personal way though. I'm just realizing now that it's because I'm happy-go-lucky so I don't think deeply about what that goal encompasses i.e the practical steps. I have set some other "unrealistic" goals in the past and realized some "byproduct" benefits along the way. So what this means to _me_ for now, is the value in the process of becoming the person can achieve the lofty goal. i.e I see the goal as a driver for moulding the person. Even if the goal isn't achieved, a better person is

Thank you for sharing this important message, Math Sorcerer. I’m horrible at math…but since my big goals in life are to do something with my chops in music and poetry, I have no choice but to get better with numbers, lol 😂 I absolutely ❤ music and reading…mathematics not so much! But I understand that mathematics has its place in the world…and there’s nothing wrong with that. My understanding of some of history’s greatest philosophers, is that they were in love with mathematics…like Bertrand Russel, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. To each their own ❤

You should review The Scottish Notebook. It was an open notebook, where mostly polish mathematicians, such as Banach and Mazur, wrote open problems is functional analysis, even with prizes such as a bottle of wine or a live goose. Really interesting mathematics and interesting piece of mathematical history.

thinking about what you REALLY REALLY want in life is such an important thing.. we can often think it's money we need, but a life where we pursue career without love and good people who care about us would suck in my opinion and just trying.. and keeping on trying.. and seeing we don't have to make it all happen at once, and that even if we can get a bit closer to how we want things that is Great and can build on that it's good to set very short term goals that we can do in a day, that build towards our overall aims and way we want our days and our lives to be
