Visceral fat is a HUGE thing to be aware of, especially for guys (Men tend to carry more of it than women, and it's one of the things that is suspected to contribute to our shorter average lifespan). Losing it sometimes has little visual impact except for a less full gut area, which you may not even notice depending on how much tension you carry in your core muscles. It's also linked to way more harmful effects on your health than subcutaneous fat. Definitely something to be aware of. I've known people who have lost a lot of weight and don't look much different, so they get disheartened until I explained that a lot of it was probably visceral instead of subcutaneous.

visceral fat when lost will have you breathing better and you will feel better. while that visceral fat is in there all your organs are compressed. removing that fat gives more room for the lungs and intestines. It's safe to say when you are down around 8% body fat that visceral fat is low.

Another bit of math: there is a cube relationship between Volume and circumference. Meaning that 5lbs lost at 200lbs might lose an inch off of your waist, but at 300lbs it may take 15lbs to lose an inch. for a sphere Circumference = cuberoot(Volume/(4/3*pi))*pi*2 for bodies it is different, but the relationship is the same.
@jrippon
@jrippon 2 жыл бұрын
What?? It doesn't work like that. You're assuming the shape remains the same (scaling the same in all three dimensions). When you lose fat, some of your girths will reduce, though not all by the same rate. But more significantly, if, say, you manage to shrink your waist by 10%, your linear measurements (limb length, torso height, etc.) remain essentially unchanged. It's similar reasoning to why BMI varies as the square of height, not the cube.
@dircery
@dircery 2 жыл бұрын
@@jrippon I think you misunderstand me. The mathematical equations for any shapes circumference to volume is by definition a cube. While a body is different from an example sphere the relationship has to be the same. If you look at someone who tends to put weight around their midsection, guess what it looks like, a sphere. If you then assume that the pounds subtracted are purely fat which has a density of 0.033lb/in^3. 100lbs of fat has a volume of 3015in^3 and 200lbs of fat has a volume of 6030in^3 and 5lbs is 151in^3. going from 100lbs of fat to 95lbs of fat results in change in circumference of 0.96in, where as 200lbs to 195lbs is only 0.60in. Now bodies are a lot more complicated. Fat can go elsewhere and can be replace with muscle. But with those caveats the situation is even more pronounced. Regardless the lean body mass(height,limb length, etc) does not matter, since I am only talking about changes in fat. BMI is a crap measurement that no one should be using. That a 200lb body builder with 5% fat and a 200lb obese person with 30% fat get the same score should be a dead giveaway that there is something wrong with it. Measures with better clinical usefulness are height to waist circumference, %body fat, or even actual body density.

Such a great topic to cover! You killed it, too. We see that same thing all the time. That illustration was perfect, showing how at first you just get smaller. It isn't until you get lean that you start looking leaner. And the same is true in reverse, too. Sometimes people get bigger while bulking, but much of that size is coming from fat. Or a lean person freaks out when they suddenly lose a bunch of muscle definition, not realizing it doesn't represent much fat gain at all.

Here's my story (for anyone that it might resonate with): I'm 6'1 and the first real cut I ever did coming down from 180ish, I had to go all the way down to 154 lbs to be 8% bodyfat. Mid way through I just felt I looked flat, small, stringy and basically just like a swimmer (even though I trained hard as fuck for 2 years building muscle). The thing I learned going all the way down to that bodyfat is that PEOPLE OVER ESTIMATE HOW MUCH MUSCLE THEY HAVE and under estimate how much fat they actually carry. Coming off my cut I also learned how important looking full from the right diet is, and I fill out to a solid 165 lbs with visible abs after adjusting to a good maintenance diet and then eventually bulking up to a heavier bodyweight with better body composition. It's that 3rd cut after 4 or 5 years of lifting that really makes you look impressive. These days I only have to cut down to 170lbs @ 12% bodyfat to have a nice blend of size and aesthetics (from a typical 190 bulk).

@@wally139 I think your calculations are too optimistic on how much muscle you'll retain. Using your numbers, 85% of your weight loss will be fat, which i think is too high. Down to 13-14%, I could probably consider that level of muscle retention possible, but as you get closer to 10%, the percentage of muscle from each pound of fat starts to skyrocket, getting perilously close to 50%. (To clarify, at 17% body fat, if you lose a pound of weight, 90%+ of that pound would be fat. At 10% body fat, if you lose a pound of weight, it will be close to 60% fat, but for some people it could even be 50% - I think genetics make the difference here.) Also, if it's your first serious cut, hate to be a downer, but chances are high that you'll unintentionally fuck up at some point, so even though it sucks to think about, it's probably wise to incorporate the possibility into your planning.

But it shows what I'm doing is working and the longer I grind it out the results will keep getting better. Cheers everyone. Keep it up!

Thanks for the vid man. The fat cell receptor talk was extremely helpful. I learned that the hard way after 3 different shredding cycles thinking wow I'm at a plateau in body fat when the real case is I've lost fat everywhere else just not the places I want (abs of coarse). I found out that it was the last place my body looks to burn. The consistent waiting game was key. Keep pushing!

We underestimate how much fat we need to lose as well how much muscle we need to gain. In order to gain muscle, we need to train hard on a consistent basis. Motivation is temporary, whereas discipline should be a long-term drive that pushes us to continue when motivation is gone.

I only started to see some drastic visual changes nearing 50 lbs of weight loss. Instinctively I knew all along to not expect any visual changes at all since I was so fat. 😂 that chart you made was awesome. Exactly how weight loss works.

Excellent video mate. Job well done on this video. For myself I have been on and off 210-175 with bulk and summer cut for years my height is 5'11 and yes at 170 i feel all the hard work i put in the gym is worth it when i pose after the pump it feels so F3king good. Over the years though my diet for cutting has been less and less so i hover 185 i am not cut but still on the leaner side because i can have more cheat meals on weekends and drink social more with friends on my days off. To be honest i am in my thirties and still one of the most fittest in my group of male friends also not all my friends are gym goers and the ones who are focus more effort into cardio so and do not live that bro life (gym physic). I am on the most part still happy keeping my figure. There are times i want to cut hard and get under the 170 mark than realize it never last longer than a few months as my diet/ carbs/fats/protein is barley enough to keep the low BF but my work outs are still intense enough that it makes recovery just more work and with working full time or most cases over. It is just seems like all my free time goes to meal prepping and longer work outs which leaves me with less time with my wife and friends. So at the end of the day /every day i struggle with staying in the 185 range or keep lean which is my ultimate. Sure if I had passive income to not work full time i would totally stay lean as most of my day is free. Guess the question is when do i realize that staying super lean is not feasible or realistic all year around for the average working guy pass college days. My wife still finds me attractive, my sex life is still good, i am not trying to pick up more women, its not like i walk around everyone with my shirt off. The only person who knows i am super lean and cut when i am is me and perhaps the few times i do take my shirt off in public(pool party) (bbq /pool party) is not really a big motivator anymore to me. I know others guys at the gym (not outside friends) who stay lean all year but also are in their twenties and have other goals in mind. Its a battle i constantly think about when i am out eating or drinking what i want on cheat days (on weekends). I want that pizza and beer or Philly cheese stake and fries or that creamy thick ice-cream with all the bad toppings too. I can't imagine eating lean all year anymore. Maybe some advice from our older gym goers would be great.

Definitely recognize this, for me the really visible changes happen below approx 13%, and once getting to 12% or so feeling actually "beach fit." But 90% of the journey is probably before this last part for many, and then changes aren't really visible (at least for me). Even at 14 or 15% I felt far away from the "look" I wanted, despite being WAY lower than most prople for sure. It's all about perspective, and persistence 👌🔥💪

The bodyweight measurement is real. I recently started losing weight seriously and have been tracking my weight. I try and weigh myself every day at the same time every day, usually at the end after I showered and did everything. I weigh myself completely naked so I get the most consistent results. Over a week my weight would fluctuate just like you said up to 3-4 pounds. However after a couple weeks worth of data the weight trend line was on a path downwards. No way you could accurately tell that with just two points of data. You need to weigh yourself every day if you want a true idea of the trend your on!

Really great video. I was just recently wondering the same thing. I was originally 90kg and I've been cutting for almost 5 months now and I'm down to 75kg and I was expecting to look absolutely shredded after losing so much, but it wasn't like a huge transformation and I was worried I was simply losing muscle more than fat. But this video makes perfect sense now as to why I don't like how I imagined, despite I felt fairly lean before and never had a belly, I didn't realise how much extra fat I had.

Yes, the "I look worse" phase. I think once I start dieting and start looking in the mirror every day I don't care because I've mentally accepted I'm smooth. But then I get a bit leaner and suddenly I want to be shredded and hate that I have extra bodyfat. Then the muscles that have been built up during the weight gain phase start to shrink and lose water and I feel like I look like a chubby person who doesn't work out. Frustrating because I have been trying to gain for 6 months? But you just keep moving forward. As you get leaner and it starts to come together it's worth it.

I don't know if they really work for everyone or if it's placebo but this is why I only eat in deficit for 2-3 months and then take a diet break for a couple weeks and eat at maintenance before getting back into deficit again. It seems to keep my metabolism up and keeps me losing at a consistent rate at the same calories instead of having to keep cutting more and more and more. Ot just seems to be easier for me physically and mentally.. although obviously it does take a bit longer. As they say though.. slow and steady wins the race.

I can relate. In my case it was probably more due to less muscle mass. I do general strength training, so I've grown a lot less than people at the gym that focus purely on hypertrophy. Over the 6 years I've been trainin, years 0 to 4 were meh whenever I hit around 75kg. Year 5 was the first year people started complimenting me, and at year 6 (now) my physique is really popping even though I'm still “small” And in general there's that bf% where you're just at the edge of looking fluffy and then bam, you look like you lift.

Fantastic video! I too made exactly this mistake with my first cut.. Thinking because I've got a blurry six pack in the right lighting and some vascularity that I'm probably about 15-16%. Figured I probably only needed to cut 10-15lbs over six weeks or so and I'd be looking sharp. It was more like 25-30lbs and took about 3 months. And that was to a dexa measured 10.7% - not even close to stage ready. Since then it's impossible not to see others making the exact same mistake on every possible online forum as they plan a cut or ask for bf% estimates. Once it's been pointed out (or personally experienced) it's impossible to miss. Just logically if Person A is sitting at 6ft 190lbs after 1 year of training, yet most guys with favourable genetics and 5+ years of optimised training are competing between 165-170lbs at the same height.. it's pretty clear that Person A has a long way to go, and their 4 week 10lbs cut idea is not really going to take them as far as they'd like.

I couldn't eat for 10 days, had 104 temp several nights in a row, and was sweating like crazy nonstop. After not dying, I still looked fat, and it wasn't till I started working out after my beer bug diet/cut and got to 169lbs that I started seeing legit body changes/improvements. So for me, just from 174 to 169 was a noticeable diff, while 208 to 174 I looked the same, just wore different clothes. So ya, this is a great informative video for sure.

Well now that I saw the picture now that I'm 150lbs I look kind of squishy in that 164 pic. It's like you lose more and more and think "like 5 more lbs and I'll be shredded" then you realize it's more like 10-15 more lbs before you kind of look a little bit cut.
