I was struggling to book consistent work last year as a freelance animator and illustrator so what I did was around November I began subscribing to job mailing lists (like LinkedIn, Indeed, etc), applied to each opportunity I fit in, and basically sent so many emails to as many people, companies, and potential clients as I can. However I only started seeing results towards the end of January (at this point I was feeling really down and was just wishing for more work. Looking back now I realize that the delayed responses could be because of the holiday season!), and now I am flooded with more work than I can handle! It does take a while to get the ball rolling so start "planting seeds" as early as you can! :D (just wanted to share my experience about this because I totally agree with everything Fran said!)
@RB-mj7mp6 жыл бұрын
Social media consistency has always been so so hard for me. But it's SO important right now for artists and creative people. I'm trying to challenge myself to post every day for 30 days to see what happens. I've already had a 4000% increase in outreach just from posting three days in a row. It makes a difference guys!! And don't forget about Instagram stories!! I've gotten followers just from posting in stories!

But the only people that see your story are your followers?? So how do u gain followers from stories

For me it was so difficult maintaining both that I had to quit my full time job and have a part time job instead so i just have my basic expenses covered. If you're in a position where you can do that, i can totally recommend it. Much less stressful.

This video was so encouraging. Like....wow. I've been so frustrated that I haven't gotten commissions, especially since many artists I follow who have a similar skill level and follower count get them all the time. Now I feel a lot more motivated and encouraged! Thank you!

Wow, this was extremely relevant to my current situation. I've been stressing about not getting commissions and even knowing a few of these things, it's helpful to be reminded or to hear encouragement to keep going forward. Meanwhile, definitely trying to learn new things and improve my weaknesses. Thank you so much for the advice!

You have wrapped a "how to make more commissions" very well. Thanks for this. In case of blogging, I thought nobody was going to read me, but I kept trying, then one day I had a meeting with a customer that read my blog! I knew it because I started talking about it and she said, Oh yes! I read it. It is also very very important to ask people how they knew about you, because gives you a good picture of what's working and what's not. Greetings from sunny Panama.

I took lots of notes, and not because I am not getting commissions...I actually study Multimedia Design and I am trying to figure out what to focus on for my portfolio, before I start applying for internships for Spring 2019. So for me, this was a 'finding your internship 101'. *'Does my portfolio look like my dream job' is food for thought... So thank jooooo!*

i feel like i’m never gonna be good enough to ask for a job or commissions, i feel like i always have something to learn and that no one will ever want to ask me for illustrations because what i make is imperfect to me, i don’t know how to think that what i do is ok or if i should even think that. In the meantime i see people around me do stuff and get opportunities.. it’s hard, i think i just have low confidence, but i don’t know how to deal with it.
@Ghostslovecupcakes5 жыл бұрын
Your always going to feel like that, especially if you haven't done commissions before, I just finished a 5 year collage degree at an art school and i still feel like Im scamming people when i ask for money for a commission. I paid for 5 years of collage and im getting worked up over a 20$ commission? its dumb, but its also normal for artists to always want to strive to be better. When i finish a commission i usually don't like it/ i wanna put more work in to it but the reality is it doesn't have to be perfect. It feels great to receive a custom commission from someone, regardless of "imperfections". don't feel like your not good enough, you can only get better by learning through doing. Your next commission will be even better than your first, and you will continue to improve as you go as long as you keep drawing.

Agree about doing your own things during the quiet times. It is too easy to start feeling stressed about money but I find that this eases when I am working on my own stuff or working on anything that helps put me closer to my goal such as marketing ideas and all that stuff....it is when you stop and then you're ruminating and it all becomes doom and gloom....just keep slogging on.

Tengo un pequeño proyecto como encuadernadora y ver que alguien se tome el trabajo de dar tips y consejos para los que estamos empezando es admirable. Thank you so much for advices and inspiration! Needed it more than ever. I graduated this year from a Visual Communication (basically graphic design) course. During my second year of uni i realised that I prefer illustration more than design. My dream is to work with publishers. I keep sending my folio to them. But, of course, it takes time to get noticed. I moved back with my parents, I'm broke af. Jobless. Thinking whether I should get any kind of full-time job or be patient and get a job in the industry i want to work in.

Thank you for your ideas and support for aspiring artists! I'm getting ready to graduate from college this year. One thing I'm really having trouble with is getting a larger following on social media. I usually post every single day, and I make sure my contact information for my own website as well as my Behance profile are available. I also try promoting my prints, commission work, etc. However, my following isn't growing as quickly as I feel like it does for others. I post so much, and I gain followers, and then the next day lose them. I'm scheduling time for my own work outside of commissions, full time schooling & work. I'm getting ready to get an internship, and while I'm applying, I am doing projects for my portfolio. Maybe I'm being impatient, or maybe my art is just too inconsistent? As a result I often feel dissatisfied with my own art and become my own worst critic. I'm trying my best to promote myself and stay optimistic... Just feeling a little lost. I'm going to take your advice though and just try to trust the process and go to more networking events. Hopefully that will help!

Hi Fran, I have a question. How do you find a way to settle on certain style? At which point did you make up your mind that "this is my way!" ? Everytime I run into a problem, I question not only my skill but also my path: maybe I should do it entirely in pencils, or watercolor.... This has been killing me! Not only did I waste lots of time, it also turned me into a hoarder. I bought loads of books of different style, analyzing them, taking notes. Yet the large amount of information did help my confidence whatsoever. I'm still stuck in the same place with zero progress.
