Why You're Not Getting Eggs From Your Quail Yet

One of the most common questions I get asked is why aren't my quail laying eggs yet. Most of the time it has to do with the amount of light that they are getting (or not getting). They need a consistent 14 hours or more of light per day in order to lay eggs. In the winter time you need to supplement them with some kind of external light to keep them laying.

I have a pond solar spotlight aimed at one hutch and they are laying like a dozen eggs, another hutch I have outside without a light, has no eggs. Tested. True.

Appreciate the video! One question what about extremely jumpy birds i go out into by back yard and they seem to freak out every time always have running frantically from one end to the other. Wondering if this is stopping them from laying, hopefully i dont need to restart and get a better line thats less skidish.

Hi Chris have a problem with one of the quail she wasn't eating or drinking for day or too not laying i thought she was egg bound but can not see anything. Shee is sitting with eyes closed mostly.. i got her to eat something today but she won't drink anything any advice would be great 👍. Got lucy i put water in a syringe feeding her droplets for now

Hi Chris i am in Australia my quails have been laying eggs about middle of April and all of May one person said to me wait for spring but my quails had never stopped like this before. I have seen some of the males don't have foam anymore why is this Chris i you can help me out. And my hatch rate is 1% down too do i need to get are new blood line and mix them up?

Sort of unrelated to the video, sorry about that.. but I was actually making plans to build a hutch based off your video showing your build. I think I have a full part list figured out for everything except the hardware cloth. I was wondering which size it was, lots of people seem to recommend the 1/2 in stuff for outdoor use, but I was wondering if you knew what you used for this design. Thanks!

yes, 1/2 inch hardware cloth is what I use. If you can get it you might want to use coated hardware cloth for the floor. If it is coated, I would go with 1 by 1/2 inch if you can find it. Hope that helps.

Hey im in Texas its hot long days i have some jumbo coturnix browns. They are all 9 weeks old now. My roosters started crowing this past week and they are breeding my females i just seen yesterday. None of my females have started to lay eggs yet. Any idea why no eggs but males are mating the females

Hi Chris! I have a question about your watering system for your quail. I'm looking to make the same semi-automatic poultry watering system for my quail and rabbits, which are housed in a similar set-up as your quail coop. However here in Belgium, the winters can be cold (14°F) and water freezes often. Do you have cold winters and if yes, how do you prevent your water from freezing?

I don't have a solution for that unfortunately. I just take down the system in the winter and switch to watering the rabbits in bowls. I have been using an electric heated waterer for the quail that works well. How about a light with a motion detector feature? Wouldn't turn on if they were "sleeping", right?

I don't know if that would work or not. I always thought it would be going on an off all night long but I don't really know. I haven't tested one out.

I think he uses PURINA Game Bird 30% protein Starter. I use it for baby chicks and adults. I'm getting almost 30 eggs a day. I have the lights on them about 15 hours a day.

I actually use a feed from a local feed mill. MFA Agri Services 30% protein game bird starter. Brand is not really that important though. As for fertile eggs in the winter, yes, a light on them will keep the hens laying and the roosters breeding. As long as the eggs don't freeze they will still be fertile.

It stays on until the battery runs out. Sometimes that is all night long, depends on the charge. They seem to do fine with it though and still get their sleep.

Hi i live in a small town is bit noisy from dogs and sometimes cats at night, is there a way to keep the quail calm as iv still no eggs and its coming into the spring

They should adjust to that just fine. If you don't have lights on them to extend the daylight that is probably the issue. Just give them another month and they should start laying as the days get longer.
