Hiya! I just wanted to say thank you for the refreshing, thoughtful, humorous, and informational videos! It’s been months since I added another plant-centered content creator to my daily KZbin watching repertoire. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and I am very excited to plow through more of your content. I just purchased my first cyclamen and hope it survives :)

Hello Geoff! I live in North Arkansas, USA. I received a tiny flowering cyclamen from a friend in Mid Feb. this year. Our winter months are late November into March, sometimes into mid-April. I have been reading a lot and now watched a couple of videos - yours is the most comprehensive, yay! After the blooms died I re-potted it in a larger clay container with drainage and now that it's almost June and temps are around 24c day and 18c night it's time for dormancy. Leaves are still very green with four of them on very long stems (is that normal?). I can find a cool enough spot but am wondering a couple of things: 1. How long will it take for the leaves to fade?(last watering was two weeks ago) 2. Would 30ml of water once a month be enough to keep it going? 3. How dark should it be where I keep the plant for the next 4-5 months? I hope this wasn't too long but I hoped to give you enough information to be able to give me the best advice. I look forward to your reply!

Firstly the very small ones are the most difficult to take through dormancy. They're from a very small, immature tuber, and wouldn't naturally flower without ideal conditions and possibly chemicals to force them into bloom. Yours could be such a plant. I've never managed to get one of the so-called 'mini' cyclamen through dormancy. However, assuming it's not and you can at least see a tuber, then don't worry about keeping it cool - they naturally go dormant through hot, dry conditions. I would keep out of direct sunlight, and just give it enough water to stop the compost from pulling in from the side of the pot. The actual amount is going to vary based on conditions but I've found they're generally very tolerant. You just don't want it dried out to a crisp! Sometimes mine keep a few very small leaves all through the summer so I wouldn't worry about the leaves - just leave it to do its thing. (Long stems usually means you've got it in too dark a spot - but again I wouldn't worry about that while it's having a rest.) Good luck!

I've recently found one of these gorgeous plants at a nursery in Western Canada, a complete impulse buy! Unbeknownst to me I brought home a hybrid, mostly white ombre to pink. I appreciate all of this info!

Hi Geoff! I have killed many cyclamen plants over my 64 years. I guess it's time to try again. I think my problem is how much to water during dormancy.

I've also lost a few through dormancy, Tom. I'm hoping that by not completely stopping with the watering I won't lose any this coming summer. The amount of water very much depends on your conditions - as I know you're aware - but for me, I just gave them a tiny trickle every month. They even had baby leaves but didn't grow any further. It seemed to work better.

Super helpful! I hope to be able to keep these, but I'm not sure how well I will do. I will be having trouble taking them through dormancy successfully, I'm afraid. I don't think I kan find a cool enough place for them. But I'll try and see if I can't get lucky!

Thank you so much! Always good info Jeff. Can you, please, talk about what to do with a store bought cyclamen: if it needs to be repotted right away and if the tuber has to be out of the soil or not? Nobody really talks about it... I was gifted a florist's (persicum) cyclamen a week ago, it's tuber is completely underground. I searched around, most folks say that the tuber has to be above the ground partially. I am tempted to repot my cyclamen, but it's full of blooms, blooms are looking healthy, nothing is droopy... Yet some leaves are developing yellowish and brown-greyish spots. The temperature is nice and cool.. I am completely lost on what I should do to save my cyclamen. Thank you!
@Grow_Up_Man55

It very much depends on how big the tuber is. Very often these plants bought in 'non' garden centres or nurseries can be really tiny tubers - practically seedlings. They're kept in ideal conditions and produce way more blooms and leaves than you'd expect considering their immaturity. I do suspect they're given some kind of growth hormone. These are always more difficult to get through dormancy in my experience. I've just bought a couple of large plants with no sign of the tubers. I don't want to disturb them while they're blooming but come spring time I'll dig in and see what's going on. I'll be able to do an update then. If I were you - I'd leave well alone and for now while they're blooming and do the same as I intend come spring.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 Thank you so much Jeff!!!!!! Great info! I treated my cyclamen with HB-101 Japanese Plant Vitalizer. Have you tried it? It does miracles! Highly recommend, especially if you need to save something that is under big stress and almost hopeless! My cyclamen looks like it is going to make it. Will let it sit and do its thing until spring. By the way, I finally have a healthy tradescantia - thanks to your advice on washing it in bleach solution.

I watered mine and it soon started to wilt, does that mean it’s going into dormancy? It is still wintertime :( I waited a good 2 weeks before watering, the soil got quite dry and leaves wilted before I watered. then it perked up but then the wilting/dying flowers started..there are still some good strong leaves and flowers on it, but it looks like half the plant it once was
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 11 ай бұрын
Sounds to me that if you’ve let it wilt in the first place, even watering hasn’t entirely hydrated it again. You’ll know it’s going dormant when the bloom spikes stop coming and the leaves start to yellow. Sit it in some water for a couple of hours and then remove and let it drain.

Thanks for your reply! I read from your previous replies that if they are in dormancy, which I am suspecting mine is definitely (all the leaves are now wilted despite watering again, the soil is moist, not wet, and I did replant in another container), you mention to just give trickles of water, is the key to keep it soil a little moist, on dry side? how often to keep the dormancy and not kill it during dormancy. Thanks! @@Grow_Up_Man55

@@trangvo3345 Firstly, the smaller the tuber the tougher it is to get through dormancy. I find that if I let them totally dry out they can desiccate, so I give them just enough to keep the media ever so slightly moist. Difficult to give an exact amount as it depends on your conditions. You want to ensure that the media doesn't dry so much it shrinks from the side of the pot.
