That could be a possibility, but remember the reshoots r shot across a considerable amount of time. Ben Affleck looked alright in the hanger scene which was completely reshot compared the opening scenes and Arthur scenes where he was noticably chubbier. And the starting part of the scene is also a reshot scene. It's entirely possible that this scene was assimilated from a Zack's scene

Did you not watch the video? He's not exactly the noble and heroic Batman we can all instantly recognize. This Batman suffers severely from PTSD and is a compulsive drinker who is broken at his core Ben's Batman has been consumed by his immense anger that's he developed a strong sense of vindication towards criminality and Superman, as he forgoes his moral code due to countless years of fighting a relentless, yet ultimately futile crusade. Again, this is *not* the Batman we all know and love - this is not a Batman true to the mainline comics. Affleck's Batman is an elseworld take of the caped crusader. He's more so akin to TDKR's incarnation of the character (as Zack took *heavy* inspiration from that fantastic comic).

@alexander soelaiman Alright. We have our opinions, I’ve seen these movies, and there are some great things in them, but I also see some bad things in them. I didn’t say they were completely terrible movies, at the level of Batman & Robin, Superman IV or so on, but I could never fathom them being on the same level as the movies you listed, because they are some of the greatest works of film period, and have either simple or complex stories where the directors knew their vision and were able to put time into making whatever they could do matter. For Batman vs Superman in particular, it felt like eight movies jammed into one, and had a Luthor that I saw was trying too hard to be as good as Heath Ledger’s Joker.

An excellent breakdown of what I believe to be an absolute masterpiece. Even singling out some of the most important lines. You do really have to pay attention to dialogue in Zack Snyder's movies as lines are so specifically placed to build the character arcs. One of the most important lines wasn't even spoken by any main character. When Clark Kent is investigating in Gotham he strikes up a conversation with two people about the whereabouts of the lady who testified before congress about the desert killings. The man cautions him to leave Gotham or he may be in danger, referring to Batman, and the lady replies "Only people scared of him got reason to be." The incorruptible Batman. Subtle but poignant. This will always be my favorite superhero movie because I "get it". Very disappointed with how things turned out with Justice League. A lot of shady things went down and that's a damn shame. #ReleasetheSnyderCut!!

@@thesmartonesback2650 Batman and Superman disagree on a lot of things in this movie! Are you kidding me? Their approach on how to help people couldn't be further apart. But their goal is the same. Do you really think Batman would show up to a Congressional hearing? Bwahaha!!! Not a chance. But Superman did because he plays by the rules. Batman does the things that need to get done to cut through the shit and get the job done and that violates civil liberties. Clark brings this up in his conversation with Bruce at Lex's party. Clark sees Batman as a reckless vigilante and Bruce sees Superman as a threat to all mankind. Did you actually watch the movie? Batman V. Superman was all about character development. Batman needed an on screen moment to show his brilliance and problem solving abilities so that he could be a believable leader in the Justice League movie. Being skeptical of Superman was completely in Bruce Wayne's character. It was interesting to see Batman actually fighting to kill, as this is something that Batman would not normally do. In his mind Bruce was actually fighting for all of humanity as he was convinced that Superman was the greatest threat Earth had ever faced. He wasn't acting with moral ambiguity. He had absolute conviction. Once he saw the humanity within Superman he quickly changed his mind. They instantly understood and respected each other in that moment. Man of Steel was all about character growth and Superman coming to terms with his powers and abilities. Batman V. Superman was all about Batman coming to term with his place in the world after the arrival of Superman.

The thing is, Superman feels like a passive character in this movie. He just mopes, broods and acts exasperated. He loses all of his inherent hope completely. I get that the Government was vehemently against him & Luthor was instigating the masses against him, but still, he had no uplifting moments at all. No scenes with levity, or optimism.

Apart from Batman, where is the character development? Most of the other characters are very static and don’t learn anything throughout the film. This is a batman who after years has lost hope. He sees him doing superman being the one good thing he can do after all his years. It's his chance to redeem himself, also to ensure his parents didn't die for nothing. The Martha scene was a ptsd moment for Bruce. Mental illness is something not understood by most people which is why this moment was over a lot of people heads. Isn't it ironic it's Zack Snyder who in his films tackled themes of mental stability

I once needed a prop for a short film that I was working on. The cover of the "Book of the Dead", a major plot device, so needless to say it needed to look good. I was incredibly low budget at the time, so I asked my grandfather for help. My grandfather was an incredible artist and painter, gladly obliging. I gave him the instruction to "Draw a face on the cover". My grandfather gave me back the book a week later, with a design on it that looked nothing like a face, with seven eyes and dark spirals. Although I didn't tell him, I was disappointed... But I naturally grew to love it. Zach Snyder reminds me of my grandfather nearly every time I watch Batman vs. Superman, because it is Snyder's vision of what he wants Batman and Superman to be. He doesn't fully understand the comics (like Burton and Nolan), so he took a wildly creative route and made it his own. He took incredibly strange liberties with the medium to benefit the story, even if it didn't fit the characters established in the comics whatsoever. He is an artist who can't help but stray, who doesn't want to fit the norm perfectly. With all of this meme-ing of BvS, we forget that Snyder is a professional, who, in my opinion from watching these films, actually gave a shit in making them, and that deserves some sort of credit. The problem with these films is that corporate bloodhounds wanted this trilogy to kick off an expanded universe, so the expectations from the audience were raised exponentially. A revision that would not only make THE DEFINITIVE versions of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, but would accomplish what the Marvel films set up with 20 movies in just 3. Think about it... If the Nolan Batman saga was going to "kick off a cinematic universe", it wouldn't work either, and in fact, the 89 Batman (in which Batman kills far more directly than in BvS) would have worked better. If DC just realized that they thrive with bold and brave artistically talented directors (like Burton, Nolan and yes, Snyder) they could have made a separated, isolated, almost else-world trilogy that would have made quite the mark, just as the Nolan and Burton series have. Hell, if the planet never heard of "Bat-man" or "Super-Man", this film would have been a billion times more understood. It wouldn't have accumulated a hype train that was far too monstrous to stop. It wouldn't have had to compete with an already incredibly successful cinematic universe. It wouldn't have to pay so much respect to the source material as people expect from superhero films. In that parallel world, Snyder would have made good movies, hell, probably great movies. And in a time where superhero films being uncreative and unimaginative sells hard, and creative and imaginative films get royally shit on, I'm worried as to what this means for the future of DC.

+ ghrimsaad This movie does have some flaws, but none of them have to do with any of what you have listed. Almost all of the answers to your questions are in the film. 1. Lex's motivation? Were you sleeping when Lex literally explained his disdain for gods. "If god is all powerful, he isn't all good" & "If God is all good he isn't all powerful". Those lines are one of the most philosphical lines I have ever heard to be honest. 2. One reason would be that. The kryptonian ship recogonized Zod's body. He was in with Lex. Again, this is rather a minor detail. 3.I don't even understand what you are on about with "1 v 1" thing. This doesn't even make any sense. 4.To get superman and batman to square off. Superman was the happy good good guy. Batman was the good bad type of guy. Please watch the film, the extended. 5. Seriously? You didn't hear the lines about Bats condemning the people to die or anything in the news and through alfred? 6. In regards to the robbery: This is not even a valid criticism. This is upto the director and personal biases. 7. Yeah..like literally every shitty films Marvel has shitted out recently. Mark my words, marvel is gonna get shittier and shittier. The superhero franchise will die like the westerns. Why because its the same shit, same tone, nothing different, all mediocre films. This is meant to be a comic book movie. Ask yourself, if you were to translate raganrok and BvS into two different comic book, which one will read and feel like a comic book? Definitely not Raganrok.

And I am glad that someone's understood what that whole Martha thing was about. Bruce didn't stop himself because he thought it was cute their mothers had the same name. Bruce stopped because he realised Superman wasn't just Superman. He realised he was Clark Kent. A human being. More human than he'd been. That's what made him stop.

Batman V Superman reminds me of what people thought of Dune when it first came out. At the time people felt all Sci Fi epics should be something like Star Wars. And today People think Comic Book movies should be like Marvel Films. But Dune was a dark, cerebral, complex Sci Fi movie just like BVS. The complaints about it remind me about the complaints of BVS. Things like "Its too dark". But now Dune is considered a masterpiece. Time will be a friend to BVS. It was really just ahead of its time.

Alvin Elmore BVS had a lot of good Intention, but poor Execution. A lot of what Roby says here is almost the intentions of the film, but he rarely explains how it was executed. Sure, this batman is interesting and different, oveall a new and very interesting look, but how does that tie-in with Lex's nonsensical plan? Lois lane's dumb subplot? The intentions should not only be analyzed as just intentions, it should always be analyzed with the execution. Some films have the most boring, uninteresting and dumb intentions, but *the way they execute that intention* sometimes become amazing. If you look at the bad intention as just the intention, you leave in your mind a bad film, but if you look at how that bad intention is executed, you will change/not change (depends on *how it is executed*) your view about the film. This is just my opinion tho. I just explained my thoughts on why BVS fails.

This video finally broke my silence. I have to talk now. So please, people, listen to me at least this one time. The problems with this movie are not the emotionally envolvement of the audience or the overall tone, the overall story, the style, the music, the characters. Burce's ambition towards Superman, Lex Luthors ambition towards both, Clark's position towards political and social actions are all absolutely fine and work perfectly within the overarching story. Even the creation of Doomsday and Supermans sacrifice are fully acceptaple. But the one and only problem this movie has is its plot and execution of those story beats I wrote before. This plot does not work from a logical standpoint. Characters behave in certain situations not according to their personality, just to move this convoluted mess forward - for example. Supermans decision to sacrifice himself from a story standpoint is great and works. From a plot perspective it doesn't. People confuse plot with story very often or think they are one and the same. On the other hand, the audience often gets mislead by their emotions towards a certain STORY moment and so judge and entire movie for good or bad just because they felt something, even if the plot did or did not work in this situation. Think about that. Most of the media we engage today is just built around the manipulation of emotions. And some authors a pretty skilled with this, can even hide the fact that their plot does not work at all. But nobody will think about that, because they felt something. So we got a good story in this case, but it was overshadowed by its very weak and poorly written plot.

Here's what another KZbinr said about BVS in a Nutshell: "The Batman in BVS is no longer Batman, and Superman is NOT Superman, yet". What that means is Snyder's vision was intentionally set up this way. He wanted Superman with no experience, raw, and taken from the perspective of the world, and how the world would portray a being capable of destroying the entire planet. Snyder wanted MOS to BECOME Superman in the following sequals. Batman/Bruce Wayne lost everything. His parents, his friends, Robin. Think about that. This is a Broken Batman. BVS was about HIS redemption, and coming back to the Batman we once knew. I highly recommend the ultimate addition.

I think one thing people forget is that Superman in this film isn’t the Superman we will come to know and love as he is just starting out, so of course there will be people that have trust issues with him. How does one earn trust? By continuing to do the right thing and leading by example. Batman doesn’t see that in Superman until near the end of the film, after Batman realized he was wrong about Superman. We as an audience know that Superman is a good character, but not Batman or others in the film, which is a big reason why the media is portrayed so heavily in this film too

I loved it. I think that it would be better if it din't have to tie in directly into Justice League. For general audience there are few problems beside studio involvement. One: Snyder does not make movies. He animates comics. You could screenshot every scene from BvS, paste it into comics panel and it would not look out of place. Two: most people do not want to accept to what level Bruce Wayne is damaged and broken. Neurotic hunt for Superman, extreme violence, abrupt Martha mood swing... Those are all signs of deeply deranged person. It is hard to comprehend what looks like to spend 20 years of fighting crime and loosing that battle, loosing friends, witnessing lowest human desires. "One bad day away from being me". That bad day did happen to Bruce. From Justice League trailers I came to conclusion that Bruce is not as damaged anymore. I can suspend belief for flying aliens with laser eyes and indestructible goddess and what not but if Bruce goes from full on psycho to friendly neighbor Batman in less then 10 years and without heavy medication, well, that's too much for me.

Points I'd like to make: First, the difference between justice and vengeance is often very nuanced, so subtle it causes one to mistake the latter for the former. This is especially true for those stricken by a traumatic incident. When Alfred mentions the feeling of powerlessness in the discussion with Bruce of Superman's seemingly unlimited power, he isn't actually talking about the destruction caused by the battle between Superman and Zod; he's talking about the murder of Bruce's parents. Bruce Wayne was a powerless victim, he has sworn to never be that again. Furthermore, he has trained himself, in a pathologically single-minded effort to never be powerless again. In Bruce Wayne's mind anyone who makes him feel powerless is the same sort of person as the murderer of his parents. He cannot allow this to happen again, he cannot allow this person to exist; this person is the ultimate threat, the enemy of all. Finally, Batman's psychopathy is stalled by the discovery of Superman's mother's name, Martha. Why? Because, for a moment in his mind, Martha Wayne is alive again and he, Bruce Wayne, can save her. No longer powerless, no longer afraid, he can save his mom. Classic psychological transference. However, this is only momentary, the real Bruce Wayne died with his parents; now there is only the Bat-Man; he can never fully reconcile with the tragedy of his parents' murder, it would destroy him. There is no reconciliation, no acceptance, no closure. There is only the Bat-Man.

I might argue that their sadness and darkness actually contributed to that success.
@IndecisiveJR
@IndecisiveJR 6 жыл бұрын
Chad Wilson the Spider-Man trilogy and Dark knight and Logan weren’t complex their great films and are intelligently made but they aren’t complex. The Spider-Man trilogy and dark knight in particular beat you over the head with the message of the overall film I mean how many times was “with great power comes great responsibility” stated in those movies and how many monologues did Tobey speak summing up the moral or lesson the films were trying to teach. As for dark knight how many times does Alfred state the purpose or batman or what it means to be a hero or how he sees the Joker (some men just want to watch the world burn). Logan is great but it’s pretty straight forward for the most part. The only thing that separates it from other films is it’s an ending to Logan’s story, the characters besides X-23 and the other children die, and it’s more of a father daughter story. These films for as great as they are made all their points, dilemmas, and morals abundantly clear and very little is ever subtle with those movies.

J-Rich I didn't say anything about complexity. I was contending with the statement towards the end of the video that suggested audiences don't like BvS because of its tragedy. That being said, I think the Dark Knight Trilogy is fantastically and technically complex as a film. But it's not subtle, if that's what you mean. J-Rich I think there is a difference between subtle themes and projecting a theme onto the movie. The movies you mention might beat you over the head with their messages but at least they are consistent in them. SmedZeppelin Man of Steel’s theme was the idea that Jor-el saw Superman had the potential to be a symbol of hope and though many people will fall and stumble (Batman and humanity) they will eventually follow you (Justice League). Batman v superman was Batman’s movie for the most part and the story of his redemption as well as humanity’s so while man of Steel in my mind is from the viewpoint of the protagonist or Superman, much of batman v superman is from the viewpoint of batman and humanity and their redemption and the idea that batman, Wonder Woman etc. have the potential to be better than killers and the tragedies that caused them to lose their faith in heroism and the idea humanity isn’t worth it. I’m not seeing the inconsistency? I’m not a dceu fanboy and act like the film doesn’t have its flaws and I do like the mcu as well, but as far as the themes of these movies they are done well (besides Suicide Squad which didn’t have one and Wonder Woman who screwed it up in the third act).

what i think a lot of people missed about the dead robin in BvS is that it was confirmed that the dead robin was jason todd, who (in the comics) was beaten to death by the joker, then left to die. in the comics, superman was the one to talk batman down from spiralling into deeper violence - the DCEU didn't have that relationship until *after* BvS, so bruce would've become far more violent and angry than he was in the comics, and i think it's a key difference - DCEU batman, before BvS, had no reason to believe in the good in people: he'd only really seen the bad, and had few friends that could help him with his grief.

In my opinion the reason why BVS was not well received was because we could not connect ourselves to the characters. We were introduced to new characters like bruce wayne without any major context of what he is going through. The bruce which we see in the movie who has been batman for several years which lead to his ideas of not believing everyone . Due to his character changes he is now okay with killing people .But we as a audience do not know what those situations are which led the symbol of justice go into a massive killing spree. This is something that captain america civil war beautifully uses to its advantage. We already know what are the motives of cap from previous films like winter soldier. We know why iron man is so in grief about sokovia accords because he was the one who built ultron. But in BVS all we see is an angry old billionaire fighting an alien from space. if u think i am wrong pls correct me.

The BvS fanedit called Dark Justice proves that there's a great film underneath. Once all the additionally pointless scenes are removed, and the three hour extended cut is reduced to 1.5 hrs, it's fantastic.

BvS can be seen as deep as you want it to be. To me it is a true experience of a live action comic book novel with a ”dark”, realistic Nolan:verse meeting scifi. Snyder makes visual storytelling as a art.

I don't get peoples hate for Batfleck. This isn't the normal Batman we're used to. This is a broken man, one who's failed. This is even more evident from a cut arc in JL where Bruce wanted to die.
5 жыл бұрын
For those who are saying that it's not the audience because The Dark Knight trilogy is still beloved and yet it's dark: I think the audience just hates Snyder, between Watchmen, MoS, and BvS that are all hated when they actually have heroes that can speak without sounding ridiculous compared to the Dark Knight.

I loved this movie. "if we there is even a 1% chance he is our enemy we must take it as a certainty." Batman is correct in that assertion. He is just incorrect, there is a 0% chance that Superman is the enemy. That's the point Batman can't understand at this point. And the Martha point is soooo valid. This is the one flaw in Luther's plan that no-one could have foreseen and accounted for. Who would have connected the fact that both Clark's and Bruce's mothers' names were the same? And that was the trigger for Bruce, something that no-one would have foreseen and accounted for. Genius!

30 minutes in to my first viewing (after everyone had dogged it. 27% on rotten tomatoes. I did not really want to watch it, I just wanted to get it over with) I paused the movie and said to my wife, "I don't understand what everyone hates about this movie." It was the exact Superman story I wanted and thought needed to be told and the exact Batman story I wanted and thought needed to be told. And Wonder Woman was the balance. Ive watched this movie more than any of the Nolan films. I only watch Dark Knight for Heath Ledger's Joker. Thanks for showing BVS some love. Cheers

I couldn't agree more, It was clear from the opening moments of BVS that Batman was the true villain of the movie, he fell from a hero to a man who was actively trying to murder another living being in cold blood, when he threw the spear he was realizing how far he fell from the hero he once was and in that moment he realized that he's No better then the thug that killed his parents.

Wow as a person that thinks BvS is a C+ movie at best, this was the most enlightening commentary I have seen on the film. You did a better job breaking this down than even Warner Brothers. I like your points about the full circle (or kind of) ride with Batman and what I think is really key and Snyder probably has to be better about this, is that he expects his audiences to know. I really want to put some time aside to watch the movie again (has to be directors cut). I enjoyed the Martha scene as Bruce “comes back to his senses” of sorts but always liked that scene that shows that bond between Supes and Bats. It may not make me like the movie any more but this can make me appreciate the vision better. Thank you.

I think so many people hated BvS for the same reason I love your video essay on it: its construction. The plot points are disjointed, filled with holes, and the resolution appears thrown in at the last minute, carried out by the wrong person. I get that studio demands within a timeframe and budget can affect a movie, but not to this extent. The main gripe people have with this movie is its internal inconsistency and illogicality.

You have your valid points. But Batman V Superman received mixed reviews for the same reasons you have mentioned. I might be biased because I have seen more Marvel movies but I also went out to see all DC releases and gave them the chance (I liked the Flash in Justice League but didnt like much the movie). And Batman V Superman might be compelling for some who likes seemingly complex expositions and dark characters but that is not enough to make the movie on par regarding sales and appreciation with Marvel movies. It's a niche movie indeed mostly on the dark and complex side. However, in an already dark and complex world not everyone will be appreciative of something that is also dark and complex as it will reflect back against them making them the viewers think that the movie was boring (I did not find the movie boring but I found it lacking). This is not say that Marvel's light-heartedness (if that's the term for it) is the perfect formula for superhero movies and it's unfair to call the appreciation of their movies as escapism (watching DC can also be a form of escapism) I believe marvel could also use dark and complex tones but they should retain the Marvel way-- to entertain the audiences. Marvel can also be dark and complex and they can do so all while entertaining the audience in both the negative and positive experiences of the human emotions (laugh, cry, get angry and annoyed, amazed i.e. Russo bros and Capt. America Winter soldier.) Remember high school? Majority of the kids didnt wants to be friends with that emo and unexplainable kid except for people just like him. Well that's Batman V Superman. Im sure the emo kid is a good kid but surely not all kids would want to experience emo all day every day as their world is already of suffering-- homework, class work, projects and quizzes etc. I might be wrong tho 😂

It would have been an *amazing* movie if they didn't try to shove so many plots in one film. Batman going against superman was more than enough already. I honestly refuse to believe that it was Zack's idea- he is a great director and should know that it just doesn't work, not with so many major plots taking place at once. Regardless- I loved the film despite it's glaring flaws, and the darker setting was definitely my favorite part. Would watch again.

Tristan Gray I disagree. Snyder makes amazing visuals, but movies like Sucker Punch demonstrate to me that he values visuals over the actual story, as it is a movie which attempts to juggle multiple dream sequences together (potential for spectacular visuals) but doesn't really succeed.

I agree with you, there's little reason that wonder woman, doomsday, the knightmare and the flash time travel scene is in the films, and the ultimate edition doesn't help by keeping those scenes and adding *ANOTHER* one with the steppenwolf scene. Not to help by the character butchering of Jimmy olsen.

This movie is basicly a Donnie Darko superhero movie (in a way), and you can imagine what happen when a general audience, which is a typical superhero movie watchers, watch this movie... Basicly, this is not a movie for them. But for those who understand, i mean understand, the intention of what this movie trying to do will praise it. For me, this is a masterpiece; an idea that is so out of the box to be told about superhero in a realistic world...

I thought this at first too. I could clearly see why Bruce got triggered when he heard the name Martha, glimpsing a chance to avenge his parents' death. The thing is, one can understand something and not feel emotionally engaged. I think that's the key here; Zack doesnt make us care for the characters. I mean... if you wanted people to care just because these poor guys have been through a lot, I guess that makes sense. But most people don't feel for the characters JUST BECAUSE they've experienced tragedy. It takes more than that to build sympathy.
