The best part is that Anthony Starr didn't want the role of Homelander to begin with. He was interested in being in a realistic drama series like the role he played in Banshee, but got persuaded by his agent. He filmed his audition instead of going in person and he did it as apathetically as possible in order to sabotage his chances of getting the role. My favorite scene of The Boys is the focus group scene where they discuss the name for the "super villain" in the middle east called Naqib. According to The Boys Wiki: "Naqib, was a Supe terrorist whose existence was orchestrated by Homelander to give the American government a reason to enlist superheroes into the military" literally satirizes the events of the preceding events of the Iraq War and the subsequent "War on Terror" perfectly. The scene is literally a microcosm of how the US used circumstances it created to justify a war after manipulating global events.

Perfectly said. As a woman, I hate the push for feminist crap in movies. I love the subtle ones like Columbiana, Salt, or WandaVision (Best written Marvel content in my opinion) where it doesn't pay attention to their gender, only the performance. My thing with female characters which I don't understand is this, why are feminist writers so insistent every female character needs to be written the same. They all need to be strong an competent, but why? Not every woman in real life is strong or smart. I know some who are geniuses, and I know some who are idiots. Some like to dress sexy and love the attention, some prefer to cover up. I think what female characters NEED more than anything, is variety. Pure and simple, women are not all the same same. And shouldn't be written all the same. I don't understand how we got to a point where feminist writers convinced everyone in Hollywood there is only ONE correct way to write a woman. And it's funny these feminist women don't even understand they're basically sending the message that ALL women are the same.

The show makes no sense story wise. His performance + Karl Urban and the production value save the show. Homelander is too hard to kill (can survive a nuke and poison) so you have to make a mcguffin to kill him The government doesn't allow heroes into the military but there are heroes literally everywhere. Legit thousands across America. The fact none have either moved somewhere else or been captured is highly unlikely and then even gets proven to have happened via SoldierBoy and Kimiko. So either America would've already implemented heroes into the military or another army would've. And the heroes weren't actually in the military in Season 3, that was a plot to subdue SoldierBoy and hand him to the Russians (even though I thought they didn't want heroes in other nations armies but okay) We even learn the Russians have run experiments on SoldierBoy and straight up gave him new powers so they have an understanding of Compound V. If you CAN just make a serum that people can take, what's the point of this show? Why can't it just be distributed to people? Butcher tries to kill a baby just to be petty to Homelander. At the court hearing about who gave the terrorists the Compound V, everyone's head explodes and the only people who benefit from that, obviously, are Vought and the Seven yet the government just does nothing after that. Literally nothing happens. If you think about the show for legit 5 seconds, it makes absolutely no sense. Then add all of the extremely biased political commentary and it's actually disgusting to watch.

But I love the way that Homelander isn’t overwhelming like the overwhelming forces in a lot of cheap dramas that just make the protagonist rely on a deus ex machina to save them. Homelander’s incredibly deep flaws keep him from truly becoming omnipotent which makes him relatable and interesting to watch. The fact that he can switch from god to child in seconds makes him capricious and so much fun to watch. Thanos was the last decent antihero Marvel depicted since he had real motivations, real weaknesses and was filled with self doubt that he had to push aside as he arrived for what he saw as the only way to save the universe. And here we have Homelander who doesn’t even see himself as evil. He just wants the world to love him, a surrogate for the love he never had as a child. But as he so chillingly said, he’d make do with fear of love was impossible. Truly epic stuff, pulled off with masterclass acting.

The thing that made Homelander terrifying is that nothing he went through meant anything. He is a hollow character. All the pain, hardship and trials mean nothing not because he simply chose evil but he never considered good in the first place. All those tears, dialogues and thinking were simply about him, not a battle between what is right and wrong. He is not a shallow character but a hollow one. That's terrifying because there is nothing that can truly bind him except the little childish trauma he has.

Bro what? Have you watched the show. There's no way they would make him the main antagonist and make him hollow. His ego and narcissism slowing coming out while exposing his true character is no hollow character. Homelander and the Butcher are more alike than they are different. He drives the plot.

@@abrahampadilla7191 That's why I said he is a hollow character not a shallow one. Please reread my comment, so as to not misunderstand my point. Butcher has to struggle with justice and vengeful anger. They are alike in that they are both impulsive in a sense, very very broken deeply, full of anger and rage. But Butcher doesn't go around killing civilians, he still has empathy and compassion. Homelander is empty. He is hollow. He doesn't struggle with justice and evil. He only struggles with his own emotions. For him it's either destroy all hope of him having any feeling of being loved or letting his ego be hurt so he doesn't destroy everything and regret. Homelander never sought after real justice. He never saw the people as anything but ants. He is hollow.

Brilliant observation and one that I fully understand but couldn't have put it better. Homelander is a black hole, a void that just sucks everything in around him and destroys even the things that he actually *tries* to accomplish/love. It's not more violent, it's just more realistic about what violence actually is. Take the murder-hobo franchise Star Wars. The goons are all faceless; they even went to the lengths of changing the fodder to mostly droids. That exist to die and crack jokes. The "sanitized" violence stuff is so much more destructive and unhealthy: it portrays violence as harmless fun; a good righteous thing. The good guys are good and the bad guys deserve what they get. Classic propaganda for the bandits in power who impose violence on others for their own benefit in real life.

'The Boys' is both the breath of fresh air and the kick up the arse the superhero genre needed. It's the first show I've watched in a VERY long time where I couldn't see the twists coming from a mile away - and, even when they DID come out of nowhere to shock me, they still made perfect sense in terms of what had gone before. I'm a writer myself, so it's rare for a show of any genre to achieve that for me anyway, but this show EXCELS at it. And Anthony Starr's performance is superb, with layers of nuance; the fact that, even when he does the most horrific and despicable things, you can still understand and even empathise with his vulnerable moments is a testament to his talent.

The “heroes” and “villains” in the boys just get it done with as soon as they can. Like homelander just shows up to a terrorist hideout and kills them all within minutes and secures it for the us military or vought. Great point about the same formula being used for all of Marvel’s movies. Antman Quantum Mania and DS Multiverse of Madness are good examples of this. They took a very loved hero in DS, turned her into the villain, and then made her kill herself while in Antman they took another overly powered villain and had them “lose” to antman out of all people. If it were the comics, the heroes would lose and have to fight him again for a chance at winning.

I've always said this, that the Nolan Batman films are prime examples on what Superhero films should be. They were cunning, smart, dark, and always kept you on the edge of your seat when Bane, Ras, or the Joker came onto screen. We see that even though Batman won against them to some degree, Bruce still loses in the end and questions himself if what he is doing is even right anymore. We see his manor burned to the ground, the public turn his back onto him after failing to stop the Joker and taking the blame of Dent's death, and realizing what he truly is there for as Batman in the final movie and realizes that Gotham needs a true hero and he finally needs to move on from his pain and past. Nolan even made the villains have clear motivations that make you question whether or not they were right to some degree. Ra's wanted to purge Gotham since he believed it was a lost and corrupted city that was far beyond saving, Joker wanted to prove that even the mightiest could fall and it could just take one bad day for someone to turn out just like him, and Bane wished to complete Ra's goal with the help of Talia. Marvel had lost what made it cool for them after Endgame. Thanos was someone that literally had people asking if he was right to some degree and was talked about just was much as Nolan's Joker, but they dropped the ball with mediocre projects with even less memorable villains who has the goal of a third grader. The Boys and Nolan's Trilogy will forever go down as prime examples of Superhero IPs that are able to keep you at the edge of your seat without relying on bad cgi, terrible jokes, or dumb plot lines.

I love how the show doesn't waste my time. Every scene moves the story foward, when somting happens you immediately start thinking about the waves it will create.

While I do think the writing quality went down as the show progressed, season 1 was amazing and I love the show's premise (not counting the comics because they're... not great). For ages we joked about how a "realistic" Captain America would be like and The Boys gave us Soldier Boy.

The Boys doesn’t answer the question “what if superheroes really existed?” The Boys answered the question, “What if horrible people got superpowers and no one good existed to oppose them?”
@JM-mh1pp Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I hate this cynical " everyone is evil" standpoint. In reality heroes would be like celebrities, some evil, some snobbish or rude, but a lot of them still trying to be good people
@hellsjamfleas Жыл бұрын
That's not true. Starlight and other 'hero' characters exist. Even the 'baddies' are nuanced and could be good people in the right situation. The most sinister part of the universe is that these people have powers from babyhood. In a world where people grow up with poor boundaries, parents and authorities who are afraid of them. Important milestones and experiences are missed and these people grow up thinking they can do whatever they like. Most people don't have strong senses of personal morality, they depend on society to tell them how to act. This is especially bad for children, in real life giving kids weapons and the ability to overpower the police would be a hellscape.
@hammadmaqsood7884 Жыл бұрын
I disagree,. Most of the superheroes, with the exception of homelander and Stormfront, are shown to be regular people who got powers but become doubebags when they reach celebrity status. Homelander is the only exception and he really is a horrible person but due to the circumstance he also grew up him. The real evil is the ones behind the scenes that manipulate these heroes for their goals and they're the reason homelander is even like this.

@@hellsjamfleas Right, but 1) Starlight is weak af, 2) It took slightly better people injecting themselves to fight against the evil supes.

The Boys was a master piece, it portrayed a realistic picture of how super heroes would act and be profited from in modern society. The best thing of course being Homelander, which is just a depiction of America's violent history. I watched it just because I found that video of him cutting a crowd in half and my brain said... MORE!

@@maxjohnson8659 Yeah but the show doesn't take place in Spain now does it? America is the most recent one in history to still behave like that. The others tried to move on, but because the Dollar backs every Western nation we're really doomed to repeat the same mistakes. Anyway, I wasn't trying to turn this into a geo-political thing.

When you write down a character who is immature, fatherless, evil and murderous, what you end up getting is a truly terrifying well written villain.

I rewatched The Boys earlier this month and had a blast of a time. I did notice that the overall progression of the show got a bit stagnant and by the end of season 3 it didn't feel like much of anything changed from back at the start. But it didn't bother me at all because of how well written and fresh the characters are. Unlike Marvel, the show does a great job of balancing realism and fiction by it's character focused depth. The progress of the show is a little slow but the characters keep growing and changing and that's more than enough to keep an audience engaged and interested in the material.

The Boys is a masterpiece, the last episode of Season 3 was absolutely horrible tho and left Season 4 with a lot of damage control to be done, but other than that, I absolutely love just how this took on the approach to Super Hero media that Watchmen created and took it up to the next level.
