The best part is that Anthony Starr didn't want the role of Homelander to begin with. He was interested in being in a realistic drama series like the role he played in Banshee, but got persuaded by his agent. He filmed his audition instead of going in person and he did it as apathetically as possible in order to sabotage his chances of getting the role. Little did he know that his attitude was EXACTLY what the director wanted.

I like how it’s somewhat more realistic. In dc and marvel movies and shows (not that it’s a bad thing), half the movies or episodes are the “heroes” or “villains” going over their master plans and how they’ll act. The “heroes” and “villains” in the boys just get it done with as soon as they can. Like homelander just shows up to a terrorist hideout and kills them all within minutes and secures it for the us military or vought. Basically the boys get it done while marvel and dc usually spend unnecessary amount of show and movie time hours having inspirational speeches

My favorite scene of The Boys is the focus group scene where they discuss the name for the "super villain" in the middle east called Naqib. According to The Boys Wiki: "Naqib, was a Supe terrorist whose existence was orchestrated by Homelander to give the American government a reason to enlist superheroes into the military" literally satirizes the events of the preceding events of the Iraq War and the subsequent "War on Terror" perfectly. The scene is literally a microcosm of how the US used circumstances it created to justify a war after manipulating global events.

I actually loved how the boys depicted maeves story of being outed. As a Bisexaul woman i found it amazing that they showed how Ashley just wanted to use maeves sexaulity to market and make profit, and seeing ashley freak out when she sees maeve with a man because she thinks it'll make maeve less marketable. The show makes no sense story wise. His performance + Karl Urban and the production value save the show. Homelander is too hard to kill (can survive a nuke and poison) so you have to make a mcguffin to kill him The government doesn't allow heroes into the military but there are heroes literally everywhere. Legit thousands across America. The fact none have either moved somewhere else or been captured is highly unlikely and then even gets proven to have happened via SoldierBoy and Kimiko. So either America would've already implemented heroes into the military or another army would've. And the heroes weren't actually in the military in Season 3, that was a plot to subdue SoldierBoy and hand him to the Russians (even though I thought they didn't want heroes in other nations armies but okay) We even learn the Russians have run experiments on SoldierBoy and straight up gave him new powers so they have an understanding of Compound V. If you CAN just make a serum that people can take, what's the point of this show? Why can't it just be distributed to people? Butcher tries to kill a baby just to be petty to Homelander. At the court hearing about who gave the terrorists the Compound V, everyone's head explodes and the only people who benefit from that, obviously, are Vought and the Seven yet the government just does nothing after that. Literally nothing happens. If you think about the show for legit 5 seconds, it makes absolutely no sense. Then add all of the extremely biased political commentary and it's actually disgusting to watch.

It should be self-evident, for how else are you going to tell a gripping story if you don't include high stakes? The worst part is that Marvel's comics (can't say about mainline DC, I am more familiar with the Vertigo imprint) used to understand this principle, retcons and fan favourites' resurrections non-withstanding.

It's not more violent, it's just more realistic about what violence actually is. Take the murder-hobo franchise Star Wars. They go out of their way to downplay the misery and suffering our heroes inflict. People don't burst like balloons from their blood boiling when touched by a laser sword. The goons are all faceless; they even went to the lengths of changing the fodder to mostly droids. That exist to die and crack jokes. The "sanitized" violence stuff is so much more destructive and unhealthy: it portrays violence as harmless fun; a good righteous thing. The good guys are good and the bad guys deserve what they get. Classic propaganda for the bandits in power who impose violence on others for their own benefit in real life.

The thing that made Homelander terrifying is that nothing he went through meant anything. He is a hollow character. All the pain, hardship and trials mean nothing not because he simply chose evil but he never considered good in the first place. All those tears, dialogues and thinking were simply about him, not a battle between what is right and wrong. He is not a shallow character but a hollow one. That's terrifying because there is nothing that can truly bind him except the little childish trauma he has.

Bro what? Have you watched the show. There's no way they would make him the main antagonist and make him hollow. His ego and narcissism slowing coming out while exposing his true character is no hollow character. Homelander and the Butcher are more alike than they are different. He drives the plot.

@@abrahampadilla7191 That's why I said he is a hollow character not a shallow one. Please reread my comment, so as to not misunderstand my point. Butcher has to struggle with justice and vengeful anger. They are alike in that they are both impulsive in a sense, very very broken deeply, full of anger and rage. But Butcher doesn't go around killing civilians, he still has empathy and compassion. Homelander is empty. He is hollow. He doesn't struggle with justice and evil. He only struggles with his own emotions. For him it's either destroy all hope of him having any feeling of being loved or letting his ego be hurt so he doesn't destroy everything and regret. Homelander never sought after real justice. He never saw the people as anything but ants. He is hollow.

Brilliant observation and one that I fully understand but couldn't have put it better. Homelander is a black hole, a void that just sucks everything in around him and destroys even the things that he actually *tries* to accomplish/love. He's incapable of love but desperately wants it, but can't actually reciprocate it. He can parody it, but the illusion fails as soon as it comes into conflict with reality or any sort of pushback.

@@yeshuaislord6880 I would like to make a small correction. he had the option to be good and even TRIED to be good (see the boys diabolical episode 8, which was confirmed canon to the shows timeline), but was so easily discouraged from it you would have to ask whether or not he genuinely wanted to help, or whether he was following his mental conditioning. regardless, I wouldn't call the trauma of being a labrat for half your life childish, but I wouldn't also use it as justification to be a shitty person. anyways, it is no great mystery as to why he turned out this way, and it is astounding that Vought ever thought he'd be anything different. on the matter of comparing him to a void, that is an astute observation. Homelander is what you see, he has no alter ego, no identity other than Homelander. without his fame or his powers, or even his son, he's not a person, just the facade of one.

The Boys really came out at the perfect time. It was right after Endgame, and the superhero fatigue was setting in for many people. I was very intrigued by the concept and decided to watch it, despite me being over superhero’s at the time. Seeing Robin get dusted two minutes into the first episode made it clear to me that this was something truly special and that everything traditionally associated with a superhero film was out the window. I begged my friends, also tired of superhero movies at the time, to give it a chance. Needless to say, they loved it. Shit, even my girlfriend loves it. And she hates superhero shit. The Boys has an incredible team behind it. From the main and supporting cast, all the way to the cinematographers, it’s “Perfect. Down to the last minute details.”

Great piece, loved your insightful take on the differences between the two media here. You're missing one thing.. it not the Marvel doesn't know how to reach it audience, it's that those of us that grew up with Marvel are supposed to be moving in and a younger audience is supposed to replace us. This issue now is the infantilization of society now, everyone thinks they are still a kid and capitalism is structured to keep us that way as long as possible. Fans SHOULD be moving on from MCU and watching the BOYS just like back in my day we moved on from Marvel Comics/X-men cartoons and starting reading Spawn or watching the serious on HBO. Bottom line is, there's a lot of grown men complaining about kids movies and they look silly.

That's not true. Starlight and other 'hero' characters exist. Even the 'baddies' are nuanced and could be good people in the right situation. The most sinister part of the universe is that these people have powers from babyhood. In a world where people grow up with poor boundaries, parents and authorities who are afraid of them. Important milestones and experiences are missed and these people grow up thinking they can do whatever they like. Most people don't have strong senses of personal morality, they depend on society to tell them how to act. This is especially bad for children, in real life giving kids weapons and the ability to overpower the police would be a hellscape.

Lol like how he did a whole empassioned analysis of Homelander's character, even breaking down one specific scene in one specific episode to marvel at the acting quality... & then said "Vowt" twice in the space of like 20 seconds, like he'd never heard anyone on the show say "Vought" before? 😂😂

'The Boys' is both the breath of fresh air and the kick up the arse the superhero genre needed. It's the first show I've watched in a VERY long time where I couldn't see the twists coming from a mile away - and, even when they DID come out of nowhere to shock me, they still made perfect sense in terms of what had gone before. I'm a writer myself, so it's rare for a show of any genre to achieve that for me anyway, but this show EXCELS at it. And Anthony Starr's performance is superb, with layers of nuance; the fact that, even when he does the most horrific and despicable things, you can still understand and even empathise with his vulnerable moments is a testament to his talent.

@@francargeric1 First Two seasons are mind blowing, but actually mate, I think season 3 is my personal favourite. 👍 The nail biting episode involving the seige at the Police Station, the Stunning episode involving the attack on the Army Base, and the whole story of Chayton. Utterly Fantastic. I still cant believe how Underrated it is. Action, Action, Action. Thrills, surprises, drama. Engrossing characters right outta a graphic novel- so memorable! But Yes= I agree with what you noted about it being "rushed" at the end. The final season feels very different, a bit detached from the bullet firing, bulletproof previous three. The murder-mystery angle was almost "too ordinary" for the show, and some new gangs/characters were'nt as memorable. But- it was still Bloody Good, and I loved the finale. 👍

The Boys was written about 30 years, prior to that was Pat Mills' Marshal Law, written in 1987. I would love to the Hero Hunter grace the screen and I think Karl Urban could do it... he played Dredd after all.

The scene in the last episode of season 2 where the 3 women are beating up stormfront, and frenchie says" wow i guess girls really do get it done" which was a call back to them creating a female empowerment scene from earlier was just prefect. Its the writing that makes this show excellent, everything else is just a cherry on top.
@pinobluevogel6458
@pinobluevogel6458 7 ай бұрын
I still found that a bit cringe, but at least you can interpret it as making fun of the same endgame scene. Showing, not telling, always works better. Frenchie should have just said nothing and have a surprised look on his face as they start wailing on Stormfront. That would have been a bit more nuanced.

I liked how season 2 mocked the real world media's way of making females look strong but also at the same time made a better story for female empowerment than anything done by real world media. It was like they gave the finger to other companies decision making and also showed them how to do it properly.
@pinobluevogel6458
@pinobluevogel6458 7 ай бұрын
@@Zauchi They do fall into the trap of making most females the powerful heroes and the males very flawed. This is not actually a real world representation and gives off a modern feminist vibe. It is not very empowering to women, as their rolemodel's standards are impossible to attain and it is not empowering to men, as they have only flawed rolemodels to look at. Still, the characters are believable and well acted, which makes these issues not as bad as they would be in a more mainstream hollywood production.

@@Zauchi I understood what you were saying. It was a well made post. I just hooked in about it to give my only real criticism of the show: They are mocking things from real life and from media, but also still doing some stuff that is in the same vein, like I mentioned with the overhyping women and downplaying men.
