Another reason to have freeze-dried food, or any type of dried food storage, is it can be stored at freezing temperatures without damage. If you live where there are freezing temperatures during winter and your electrical power goes out and a lot of your food storage is in the form of home-canned or commercially canned wet foods, you will have to find away to keep those foods from freezing or, when the wet food freezes and expands, jar lids will lose their air-tight seal and metal cans will bulge and can lose their air-tight seal. Freezing temperatures will not hurt bags or cans of freeze-dried and dehydrated foods or buckets of dry grains and dried beans. If most of your food storage is dry food, this means if the power goes out in winter, you can focus on keeping your family warm and the plumbing and your stored drinking water from freezing and not have to worry about canned food being damaged.

Mountain House has been a mainstay of our family's preps for a few years now. Kid's (in a staying at home, normal day-to-day scenario) don't always give a clear indication of how good things taste. Take them on a long hike together, or a day out exercising and playing physical games... then ask them how they like one specific meal. It makes all the difference. As a retired military guy... the food we got was always great. Why? Because it was food. The reason why Mountain House is a big part of our preps is their processes, the shelf-life, and (considerately) good value. Thanks for the awesome video! Keep up your good work!

My friend Shawn and I shared the expense of a Harvest Right freeze dryer. About 5k brand new. 2 years in, both of our families have a 4 year food supply that does not require power or heat, with a 25 year shelf life. Cost $2-2.37/meal, including electricity and machine maint. Saved us a considerable amount of money, and also allowed us to start helping friends and family get prepped.

Great video! I love Mountain House because they give food allergy information on their website. My child has anaphylactic food allergies to nuts, so I have to plan for safe foods in case of emergency. Mountain House's site (as of 2017) says their food is made in a facility that is peanut and tree nut free. Just purchased this kit. Also, your channel is my favorite prepper channel!

Hey! I heard about Numanna from a KZbin Channel I follow.I contacted Mountain House a while back but they don't do GF, which is why I started searching for an alternative. Numman is a family-based business and VERY competitive with their prices AND they have great customer service. I pass their name out all the time..Actually, right now,I think you can get 144 servings for a Family Pack (4 people) for $248.00 and the food is very high quality, in my opinion..I just subscribed to your channel a few days ago..! Informative...! Keep up the good work.. and KEEP PREPPING!

I typically let Mountain House meals re-hydrate for about 20 minutes, even though their directions say you can eat them sooner. Seems like they absorb more water and are more palatable that way. Nice review! Good to see how your kids feel about the meals. My wife and daughter are also very picky and turn their noses up at anything freeze dried. LOL you guys, the Beef Stroganoff is one of my favorites. :)

It's fairly easy to prep for furry family members. Do an online search for "pet first aid kits" and read the contents list. Get those together- most items can be purchased at the dollar stores (most items are the same as humans) and obtain books written for your particular pet's first aid. You can purchase specific items as you can afford. Other than that, food, water, treats, toys and blankets and you are all they really need. Leashes, tie-outs, harnesses (get the animal used to them- my cats are trained to leashes and harnesses), and you're set.

Very good prepping info. I have been emergency prepping for around eight years, My daughter has a bread making machine and has got pretty good at making bread with it. So I asked her what ingredients she uses to make bread, I have been going to costco getting the 25 lb bags of bread flour and other things she will need to make it. I open the flour and put it in vacuum bags and seal it with my Food Saver then store it in plastic containers. Some times Sam's Club has specials on their Augason Farms freeze dried food kits that come with around 70 #10 cans of all types of food, I have purchased a few of them over the last eight years and store them away, and these Mountain House single freeze dried food meals are pretty good to. I have a lot of them.... And why on earth do you live in Southern Calif? Same reason I do.....lol

we've tried most of their menu several times. we especially like their breakfast meals. we've experimented with "cook" time and water. we've found that a little less water - sometimes as much as 30% - helps flavor and consistency. for example - we only use 1 cup of water in the biscuits and gravy, and let it "cook" for 8-9 minutes. our biscuits are always "too the tooth". the sausage flavor in the gravy comes through. yes, almost too much salt. we like to put the biscuits with a package of scrambled eggs and bacon. only use a 3/4 cup water and cook for 8-9 minutes. we get a fluffy egg, that feels good. the bacon flavor and aroma comes through too. the chicken teriyaki is sweet. almost too much sweet sauce. again, a little less water than called for and shorter cook time, the rice will still be firm. Mountain House is probably the most expensive, but the flavors in all their meals is measurably better than the others we tried.

My mom and boyfriend keep the individual packets of instant coffee on hand for the same reason. MH makes good food. But the only Downside is the need for CLEAN Hot Water. So I'd make sure that I would have a Safe Way to heat Water AND I have enough of it for the 14 days. But after the Hurricanes this year, if I could be assured of the Water Source, I'd probably have a 30 day Supply set aside. The "OLD" Rule of having enough Preparations for 3 Days seems to be a... "Little Inadequate". There are still Areas of Puerto Rico that have yet to see any Rescue Personnel on the Ground. Sometimes, Events are just Too Big. Take Care.

I'm torn between this and MREs. MH uses 8-16 oz of water per package? In a shtf situation I'd be trying to conserve as much water as possible. The MRE heater uses only an ounce or 2 of water. Problem with MREs is the lower 3-5 yr shelf life. I did a taste comparison between the and I found the MRE superior in taste.

Your kids are cute! Just my wife and I living in Los Angeles South Bay city. I have calculated we have enough food and water, without washing and personal hygiene, for about 90 days. I have a mixture of Mountain House and assorted MRE’s for food. I also have items for personal protection. I would like to store more especially since we will likely have to take in two more family members thus cutting our prep in half. But here’s the rub. If we have a catastrophic power grid failure of 6 months or more I figure we’re dead. Seriously, we can’t prep sufficiently to last 6 months or more and no way we can get out of here (15 million people and 100 miles to get where? Barstow?) So my thought is finding a network of like minded, preferably Christian, urban preppers in our area, say within 5 miles(?) we could get to know and plan for the worst. Any ideas?

I just tried 3 bags of Mountain House I bought in 2014 as part of a 12-packet sample pack - date code on the bags Sep 2019 (today is Aug 2018). While in my store, the bags have been kept in the dark within the range 5 to 23'C. Not ideal. Spaghetti Bolognese: Upon opening the bag, the foul smell of gone off fat was the main odour. After rehydrating as per instructions, the food was inedible. I did not eat more than a couple of half spoonfuls as the taste of gone off fat (I guess the vegetable or animal fats) was pervasively foul. Sweet and Sour Chicken: Pretty much the same as above. There was a slight increase in flavour from what the food was supposed to be. Inedible to all but a starving man (expect the runs from the gone off fats/oils). Scrambled Egg, Ham and Potato: Not such a foul smell upon opening but not appealing. After hydration, largely inedible. Scrambled egg resembled sponge dunked in foulness, ham was kind of a bit like ham but not nice. If the potato cubes had been on their own then I probably could have eaten them without retching. Next I tried an MRE from a different company (only a couple of years old so half the age of the above): Chilli con carne - in comparison to the above, it was Michelin star rating; delicious. All tastings were done by two people both with the same opinion each time. I will not be buying Mountain House ever again. It is possible that these Mountain House products were not poisonous (and therefore contained calories that the body could have used) but I was not prepared to eat enough to find out. I would have been very surprised if my digestive system would not have suffered in some way. It is also possible that they were actually ok soon after manufacture but they were simply inedible after 4yrs. I appreciate good food, sure, but I am not fussy. I have eaten 5yr old army ration packs fine that have been subject to annual 50'C temperature cycling.

Are you thinking of purchasing a home freeze dryer in the future?

I would love to and I've convinced my wife on the need for one, but I'm on a pretty limited budget for preps right now. We have a dehydrator we've used for years and when I have the funds I'm looking at that solar generator you did a review on as a higher priority. The Harvest Right line of freeze dryers looks very impressive though.

+ModernReformer it does look impressive. I have a dehydrator but haven't used it yet (going to soon). I'll start some videos probably by the end of the month on the freeze dryer.

THIS IS FANTASTIC for Americans,,,, nobody seems to be giving information for people living outside USA. IS this because only USA is going to be attacked???? OR is it due to American exceptialism???? Buy food from USA or any other country to bring into Australia seem s to be impossible, either due to our import regulations or the fact that the weight make it fancially impossible???? Thanks for your ideas on this problem :)

Like you Aussies, we have diverse climates in the USA and maybe you've seen reports of a string of natural disasters here lately: Hurricanes, wildfires, freak snow storms, floods. We Yanks like to be self-sufficient just like you, so prepping makes sense. Sounds like you could use some do-it-yourself ideas for food preps [rather than ordering] - like a food hydrator that someone mentioned here 'Harvest Right'? Who knows Janina, you could be a trend setter and produce your own YT prepping videos for down under!

Awesome stuff, just got a chance to go over the taste ratings. I have been buying Patriot pantry and its not really for backpacking, due to the preparing instructions. I have tried mountain house and patriot, at the same time, its just that patriot pantry needs 4cups of water and it really doesn't work that well leaving it in the pouch. I do have to say that patriot Pantry does taste better than all the others but mountain house is a close second. when backing its mountain house if that's what I plan to eat. Thank You

I prefer Patriot Supply for their meals over Mountain House, as a #Canadian I'll pass on the biscuits and gravy.

just a reminder. in a shtf scenario, most people wouldn't give a shit about taste if they had nothing else to eat

Personally i just boil the food with rice in a pot. The rice tends to be undercooked for me.

Great work on the taste test. Next time, don't feed the kids for a day and then repeat the test. Just kidding of course.

Daisy Yep, if I'm bugging in my priorities are pretty much going to be water, food, waste management (not talking packaging here), sterilization and fitness if I can afford the calories.
