You should add Portugal to your travel bucket list because it offers stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. However, it's important to travel responsibly. The recent influx of tourists, especially Americans, has led to a rise in housing prices and living costs, making it difficult for locals to afford their own cities. By visiting respectfully and supporting local businesses, you can enjoy Portugal's beauty while helping to preserve its charm and accessibility for residents.

Portugal is suffering of over tourism, affecting housing for their own people, high rental prices, over crowded streets in residential neighborhoods, lack of housing for students, etc. Network should look for better segments that twist the reality of what really is affecting a the living conditions in a country.
@NoRoads2AllRoads
@NoRoads2AllRoads 7 ай бұрын
its not the tourists affecting the housing but the bureaucracy of crappy government. It's inadmissable that it takes 7+ years from buying land to being able to build. This strangles the supply of dwellings being released to market. In 2007, 200k new dwellings were being built per year. Currently, only about 25-30k new dweeelings per year are being built with much more demand than in 2007. This is just an example showing the problem is in the supply ... not the demand.

We have been here for the past 10 years and can confirm that this is an amazing country. It's not perfect, far from it, but we still enjoy it a lot. 3 things we like a lot: the weather, the food, and the cost of living (even though it's increasing). 2 things we dislike: the bureaucracies and the struggle to find accommodation.

Portugal is beautiful please advertise responsibly. It does the citizens living there to be so over visited that it becomes another Amsterdam, Venice ,Rome or Paris. These cities are being ruined by tourists. It’s also So irresponsible putting those love locks on the gates. In Paris France there were so many that were put on their bridges over the seine river that it causes structural damage. The city is still spending millions in repairs and cutting all those locks off. So please don’t do it.

Savannas (Alentejo), snowy mountains (Serra da Estrela), beautiful beaches (particularly between Algarve and Arrábida), forests (Gerês being the largest one)... And that's without mentioning Madeira and Azores. The Lagoa das Sete Cidades is easily one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes I have ever seen.

Good luck finding a local in one of those beautiful villages. Portuguese are being forced out of the towns where their ancestors have lived for hundreds of years because Americans and northern Europeans are buying up all the houses, raising prices. The quality of life has worsened drastically because of gentrification. It has increased the cost of everything and crime has risen in a country that until recently was one of the safest in the world. Those that come and that perceive themselves as "expats", which are nothing more than immigrants with much more money than the national average, do not learn the language, do not establish contact with those who already live here and erase traditions, places and values just to have access to a luxury life at a cheaper price. Your holiday house is one home less for a Portuguese. Regards from the Algarve.

@@bladehea speaking of god, idk what these people went seeing but we have some gorgeous cathedrals. In evora there is a buddhist style garden, also in Evora there’s a chapel where the walls are covered with human skulls and there’s a caption “us bones that lie here for yours await”. The coast in setubal has incredible rock formations, there are gorgeous waterfalls in the north (geres, arouca). In the south there is the mudejar architecture which is a fusion of christian and islamic. In the interior there are ancient villages, one is called sistelo and is often referred to as the portuguese tibet. It’s beautiful. In conimbriga and many other places you can find roman artifacts. In the south you can find islamic palaces. In nazare you have the place where the biggest wave in the world was surfed, an incredible coastline. In the islands, you have azores that doesn’t even look real. It’s mind blowingly beautiful and the food there, the steaks in particular, is incredible. So much I am not even mentioning. The monuments to the age of discovery, the ancient university of coimbra, the venetian sights of aveiro… All of this without once mentioning the usual landmarks everyone knows about. This country has a lot of problems, the economy being the worse one, but none of those problems affect tourists. For tourism, I can’t think of a more dense, convenient, cheap, culturally and historically rich place in the world. You have everything from snowy mountains to desert to stunning beaches, something for everyone within a country that can be explored from top to bottom in less than 8h by car.
