I live in Setúbal and I have mixed feelings when I see this type of videos. If on one side I really get glad that the city gets known, on the other hand I just think on how bad it gets for locals when tourists come in at an high rate - housing prices will continue to shoot up (more than doubled over the last 4 years) and gets impossible for local people to live here...and if "setubalenses" don't live here, you won't get "that feeling". Anyway, it's a nice place indeed. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing this video. It is always nice to hear good things about your country. I also lived abroad a biga part of my life. I think Portugal has good and bad things, but maybe something that I think it is important to mention is that portuguese people are very sympathetic, they always say hello and help if you ask for... The food is nice, but I think you should check seafood like "Ameijôas" or "Sapateira" or "Massada de Peixe", these dishes are cooked in a portuguese way, which you might like. I also agree with the car, it is easier to live with a car in Portugal, due to traffic, buses might get late, and via car you can enjoy amazing views like the ones provided when crossing the bridges. Some places can be cheap if you know where to look, you can have lunch in Lisbon for 4 euros if you know the tricks, and there are many cofees, restaurants, bars and discos to enjoy. If you like to live in a calm place without traffic and space, Setubal is nice. Another thing about Setubal is that in 2 minutes by car you can enjoy the forest and farm life, which is super calm, there are beautiful beaches if you go down the road to Algarve, some hidden by the trees. In Alentejo there are beaches that are so beautiful that you may relax you spirit, like the "Aivados" beach or "Zambujeira do Mar", the places where people from Libon pass the change of the year. The water is cold compared to the mediterranean sea, but one thing that I like is that you can work and study at the same time, or take online university courses. You might find more english speaking people in the Algarve, the architecture there has some arabic influence and things are also calm. And the portuguese shopping centers have lots of things like cheap cinemas compared with the US. I hope more people like you decide to move to this country and that you enjoy this country. Godspeed.

A good friend of mine moved there a few months ago and she absolutely loves it and the community of Americans and other immigrants to the area. She loves the artsy vibe and all the musicians and live music. I met the woman I may rent from and both of them say that it's about a half-hour to Lisboa. Focusing on the city gives a restricted view, the bigger picture here is the Setubal Peninsula. The coast road from Setubal to Sesimbra with the sea on one side and mountain covered in trees is spectacular. Sesimbra is a lovely town right on the beach. Further north is Caparica, it has a massive beach with a very long promenade (at least a few KLM’s), great for walking in the cooling breeze off the Atlantic. A great place for hiking and horse riding is the Parque Natural da Arrábida. The pousada in Palmela town has fantastic views by day and by night, you can see Setubal to the South right up to Lisbon to the north. Brilliant shopping centers or “forums” in Setubal, Montijo, Almada, Coina, Rio Sul. Of course Lisbon with everything it has to offer is just 40 mins away. In summary anywhere is a great location on this peninsula. I’m speaking from experience, our place is in Quinta do Anjo.

We considered Setubal as a potential place for us but because I remote work my wife wanted to take advantage of being able to be in the best weather for her which is one of the reasons we didn't stay there. Well for expat living you missed the sports: new rugby field, padel, sporting club Victoria and golf in Tróia to name only few… not to mention the water sports!
Only thing that is completely wrong and miss informed is that, prices of our apartments for sure are not " low " , 10 years ago a T2 would cost around 300 euros, which is half the price its now for a good apartment. Due to tourism the prices went up so please don't tell people that this is affordable because the minimum wage is around 650-750, so you barely can even live properly if you are not a medium class person.
@ExpatsEverywhere3 жыл бұрын
For our audience it's low. Our target audience is coming from mid to large cities in the US so for them it's low for sure. @@rir79 this was one of the reasons we thought we shouldn’t include Tróia. Just what we needed... expats coming to other areas and raising rent prices for locals. Don't get me wrong. I love that tourists love my country but this really doesnt help rent prices.
@ExpatsEverywhere3 жыл бұрын
If we're being honest, Diogo, it's probably tourist that are raising the rents more than expats. What we're seeing is that foreign investors (that don't live here) are purchasing properties for the AL market, which could be rented to a mix of tourists and expats renting for the medium term, but nightly rates provide greater ROI and will allow people to make more money if they charge higher prices, which is making the market a bit crazy. At least in Porto (were we understand the market better), AL permits are being really limited by government regulation. The puzzling thing is that taxes on long-term rentals is higher for the property owner than AL so it makes more sense to want to have an AL than a long-term rental.
