Kindle 4 is the best model ever! Small, light, and with physical buttons, and no touch screen.. awesome. I replaced my battery, and still has a lot of life left in it.

This was great. I inherited my dad's Kindle Keyboard when he died a few years ago. As you say, it's built like a tank and I do like the physical page turn buttons. Plus the screen resolution is perfectly acceptable. But I decided last fall to buy the latest Paperwhite, thinking that surely, after 10 years of advances, it would provide a much better experience. Sadly, it really doesn't. The touch interface it slow and erratic, and the speed is really not much better either. Even the screen seems to have hardly improved despite the backlight and higher PPI. And frankly, the Kindle app is still miles better than the interface on the physical Kindle devices. I think that e-Ink still has to get about 5 times faster before I'll really like any Kindle device.

E-ink, I'm pretty sure, is also less power intensive, so batteries last longer, charge cycles don't add up as quickly, so the batteries have a longer lifespan. My first battery lasted ~10 years.

I get so nostalgic for this model. I was gifted one as a teenager. I was in the hospital a lot, and this lot me through a lot of lonely days and nights. I read a lot. It also really cemented my love for the eBook format, and I've been primarily buying and reading eBooks since then. I also used that Kindle for like 7 years. I thought of replacing the battery for it, but what changed my mind was the higher pixel density and contrast on newer readers. Nowadays I use kobos.

I have 4 kindle keyboards. Bought 3 additional ones from Woot for $12 when they were available in 2018. Can't give up my clicky keys. An additional benefit is that this kindle will work in much colder temperatures than a touch screen. You can even wear gloves, which you can't with a touch screen. TTS works with sideloaded books, not restricted to just Amazon purchases.

I have the older 12 year old Kindle (Kindle 3) and also the newer Paperwhite. Interestingly, at least in daylight, the display on the older Kindle is superior to the newer one. At night it doesn't have the backlight, but I also have the older cover (which is still in good shape) and has the pop out light. Having the side buttons to turn pages is also superior to the touch screen, especially if you happen to be reading while you are eating for example, so you don't get the screen all dirty. It is also incredibly robust - and in fact has outlasted a number of my newer Kindles. So I suspect it is actually better made. In many ways, it is the "Lenovo Thinkpad" of Kindles (before they went down the chiclet path). The newer ones are lighter, so depending on how you like to read, i.e. if you like to lie on your back and hold the kindle with one hand, the newer ones are probably more ergonomic.

i think kindles are just well made devices up to and including the present day ones. it's a good team of hardware engineers and battery replacement is still quite easy. the touch version is annoying when there're bugs around in th forest, as they can select text and turn the page with their tiny legs when they walk across the device

I still have mine. I was wondering whether it would still work the other day & presumed it probably wouldn’t. Great to know it still works. I love the keyboard. I have the oasis as I’m disabled & the weighted side means i can hold it much more easily than other kindles, my arm doesn’t tire as much, plus the orange light really helped me read as my eyes were getting red & sore with the blue light, although the Paperwhite has that feature now. Anyway, just thought I’d mention why I like the oasis but I really miss the keyboard so i think I’ll try it out again for note taking when studying.

I had a kindle keyboard probably around 7 years ago but the battery was dead when I found it again. Couldn’t revive it. I started looking at the usbc kindle paper whites but I found a Kindle keyboard on fb market place for $20 and it included a case with a light attached. Loving reading on it now but I’m having an issue with the battery randomly going down to the ! Status from above 80%. Not sure if it’s out of sync or what. Regardless I don’t regret it
@MatthewSchaefer

Hmmm, odd. I do know that most devices if they lose ALL battery (like, not just dead....but dead for a long time) will not charge again. It takes a little bit of charge for a device to accept a charge (which is why they recommend storing devices at 50%). Not sure if that's what happened for your first device or not.

Here in Mexico people still have some Kindle Keyboards but, because as Latin Americans we have this tendency to use everything until it breaks or stops working, there aren't a lot of these devices on Marketplace unless they're quite expensive (some people collect them). Take good care of your Kindle Keyboard, it seems super practical and as someone who is not very into touch screens (unless i have to clean them frequently), I would have loved if Amazon kept on improving and keeping the features of this model. At the moment I have the Basic 10th gen, it's nice, very useful but, just like I wrote before, I clean it very frequently with a dry cloth to remove any fingerprints. I guess that's just me being obsessed with cleaning 😅.

I completely agree! I've been using a Kindle Keyboard since they first came out. I've gone through 4 of them over time, mostly 2nd generation. I usually buy them off ebay or wherever and I always make sure I have an extra one tucked away in the closet ready to go if the one I'm using stops working. (They cost so little the security of having a backup is not a big investment.) I finally got a Paperwhite a few days ago from Woot for under $30 to take traveling with me. (So I wouldn't have to worry about taking my external reading light.) I am NOT a fan. Having to move your thumb to touch the screen when you want to change the page is a real distraction. On the keyboard version, with its perfectly placed buttons, you never have to move your thumb over or even break your reading stride. You just gently press down from where you're naturally holding the device, even one handed, and, viola, new page. Perfection. And I can't tell you how often the Paperwhite does things like not changing the screen fast enough or going multiple pages forward. Maybe this is a function of it being refurbished and maybe I'll get used to it over time. But, overall, not impressed.

Went on a mission to find a 3rd gen keyboard - eBay from a charity shop bid for < £30😍 Still upset about my old one because I had it for so long but hopefully this one will last me for a while! Used to own an old black keyboard but it was chucked because the kindle wouldn't function. Now many years later I have found out the reason was because it need to be updated. Amazon made me buy one instead of telling me this. Now many years later I have a paperwhite 2017 but the. keyboard has always called me. I gave in. Bought a broken white model with 3G. You certainly got a steal of a deal for $8 as i did not pay that even for a broken one. Fixed it with a battery, manually updated it, and have been reading tons on it. Found out it was the more expensive ad free version when new so thats interesting. Many don't know that you can download an MP3 on these. Its under the experimental tab in settings and the folder is accessed when you plug the kindle into a computer. Guess thats another use for the headphone jack Love that it doesn't have a touch screen, and that its so basic. Hope Amazon never fully stops this one from working. The 3G towers in my area are apparently done so I don't have that access anymore, but this one had it at one point. Found an original backlight case for it after a lot of searching, and thats extremely helpful for reading at night.

I was going to buy one of these, but i have read on the internet that you can't put an Amazon Account on these anymore, and more importantly, you can't pass archives from the pc to the kindle anymore, so.. just making these unusable for me as i wanted to get books and papers from the pc to the kindle to read. Is this true??

I have an argument to make...just listen to this..."Kindle could release the version in 2024 as Oasis2 and people who has never seen it will buy it like crazy...becz technically all features are upgrade to the current version😂"

Not that long ago I found a kindle oasis 8th gen with original leather charging cover and I’m telling you, I use it more than my new 2022 kindle…..I just recently replaced the battery in it too and now it last me 10-15 days off one charge. I will never buy another kindle again until I HAVE to

So funny to me how well these older kindles are holding up and how unusable the kindle fire tablets are. I’ve got 2 kindle fires from around 2012-13 and they’re basically unusable. Not surprising if you know anything about old android tablets, but still, can’t even shop on Amazon, listen to music, or access the store to read. Funny how these objectively inferior “normal” kindles have held up so much longer. STILL ROCKING THE KEYBOARD

Actually it has much faster processing power than the display. It is like an old old, smartphone, or oldish cheap smartphone. You can type pretty much as fast as you want because the actual gui program is faster than the screen.

What's sad is that it also has one of the highest if not the highest contrast ratio among all the Kindles. Most if not all the new ones are much worse in this aspect.

Heyy i have this one kindle, just bought it from a secondhand store online, but the big issue is this kindle unfortunately is a managed device, and the wifi is off, i know that this kindle have no support from amazon anymore for it 3g, but i thought the wifi must be can be use, but as i said it is already managed to not to connect to wifi from the previous owner. And i also cant factory reset it, after i ask the issue with Amazon CS it said bcs this kindle already old so the wifi can't be use. But i think, its not bcs of it, its just already managed by the previous owner maybe for their child. And it just dead so they sold it. I really want to make it become can connect to wifi. Sadly i cant do the factory reset

Putting a new battery in mine. It's worth it. I have 5 kindles (including fires). This is the one I use. And 3G? Worked on the beach in Mexico. Amazon should bring it back. I've written emails in a pinch. *I think 3G since stopped working - not sure.

I couldn't agree more. Thanks for cutting through the consumerism nonsense. I buy my kindles off ebay. They come like new. I use it every day and it just works until I sit on it or it gets damaged in an overhead bin. Then I buy another inexpensive one from ebay. Great video.

Both my laptop and e-book were released in 2011. And I'm not going to replace them until they break and can't be fixed. I've got plenty of spare money, it's just that everything is complete shit these days. My phone is from 2016. Not planning to replace it either. I can't even find a decent replacement. Somehow everyone's making phones with this stupid notion that the screen has got to cover everything (forget the curved edge insanity). And they make the screen glass break easily. I dropped my phone many times, the borders are all worn from the falls, a few scratches on the screen that are not even noticeable when using. While new phones have this stupid glass that slightly distorts the image so that it looks a little funny compared to my phone, and if you drop the phone, the glass will be all cracked and the screen will be barely usable. Having all these quality things be cheap (when bought second-hand) while all the new expensive stuff is just one big headache, it almost feels like possessing some sacred knowledge

Can someone please help me with my Kindle DX 2nd generation 2010, I removed the old Amazon account and trying to register a new Amazon account but it's not allowing me, we still have 3G internet in Canada and the beautiful device was working yesterday on the old email, Amazon supervisor did trouble shooting with me via phone and after doing reset and factory reset it's not allowing to register and gives a message that it's not able to connect, although the 3G is still working, I think Amazon do this to prevent people from selling old devices online to new users with new account, so they can make more money

I was originally intending to get an e-reader from a thrift store because, well, I'm cheap. And I don't really need one. The new features seem nice, but half the reason I want a reader is so that I can use a dim yellow lamp to read by, not some backlight look like a phone. On KZbin I only find reviews for newer models. Besides you. Looks like there might be benefits to these old ones, too. In Canada, it seems Kobo is more common these days than kindle. I'd like to load PDF's and Epub into it if possible. I have old vacuum tube data sheets and such that would be nice to view on an e-ink display. I'll keep an eye out. Maybe even an old Sony would do..

U.S is phasing out 3g too. Probably by the end of the year. But we shall see. Kindle voyage is my favorite. I don't need physical buttons but I do like the haptic feedback and the ease of reading left or right handed on the voyage.

I purchased my Kindle Keyboard G3 back in 2012 and having installed the 'Bible Study Suite' have used it virtually every single day for the past ten years and it has never let me down. I like being able to grab it without worrying about touching the screen and accidentally booking a holiday in North Korea or having to continuously hold it by the edges when reading, I just grab it and I'm on my way.
