I loved to drag race, at its best, ran 12.73 at 111 mph. Back in 1981 I decided to build it up and sadly its been a lifetime project car for the last 39 years, hopefully I want to get it all assembled THIS spring 2021. Nice! I was fortunate enough to grow up next door to a guy who had 2 of the 1st generation Camaros. A '67 and a '69 he was restoring. Looking back, my love for American muscle cars was cultivated by spending time with him while he worked on them and by him being patient and kind when a kid would ask a lot of questions. He taught me everything..from the basics such as the differences between a small block 350 vs a big block 427 or 454, functions of superchargers and why hoods had scoops or air vents, positraction and slip differentials, all the way down to the details such as how you can tell a '67 vs a '68/'69 due to the absence of side blinkers, etc. Great guy and 20 years later, I'm in the middle of restoring a '67 myself. Just dropped in a 383 Stroker, so I'm on my way and I owe it to my neighbor for setting me on this path.
@ArdFarkable4 жыл бұрын
Hey I hope the car is still going well! How far along have you made it? I have the same setup, 67 with a 383, awesome choice.
@SKtube04 жыл бұрын
@@ArdFarkable Thank you. And nice! Fellow '67 owner with similar engine tastes. As far as the engine, it's perfect for me. It was built by a great company here in southern CA with my input and wants and I now have a "500 Split" or "500/500" or that's what they're calling it. On the Dyno, it's pumping out over 500 hp with over 500 lbs of torque, so I'm very satisfied with my modified small block! Right now, in the middle of switching the 'H' exhaust for an 'X' and a few more things I need to check off and then I'd consider it to be worthy of a restoration.

I finally got to drive that Camaro, and even though I made sure to go easy, I stepped on the gas and it was going 30 mph in nothing flat. I lusted after that Camaro. There was another Camaro I lusted after. Frank Borman lived in the neighborhood, having become the CEO of Eastern Airlines. He had a beautiful '69 convertible. Other than that very clean. I tried with the old man since I was 18 trying to buy the car he wouldn't sell. He said he was saving for his grandson, but the grandson wasn't interested he was into import tuners and Lexus, Benz, BMW's and Acuras. He finally let it go last year to me. Only thing he asked was that I take good care of it. I haven't figured out what to do with it yet just sitting in my garage with car cover of course. Only start it from time to time and drove it to work only two times.

Sure, if I were a rich man - but I'm far from rich. I bought my '67 Camaro in 1987, and spent 31 years trying to turn it into what I wanted it to be. My first car was a '68 Camaro that I bought in '84, and from the start I was inspired by the Trans Am cars of the sixties, and I wanted it to be as much like one as I could make it. From the beginning I wanted a five speed, stiff springs, big sway bars, etc. When I saw Mark Stielows' white Camaro in the 1992 Real Street Eliminator, I saw someone doing what I wanted to do, but didn't really have the money for. But I managed what I could, and swapped it to front disk brakes, built a 406 with Brodix heads, swapped the Muncie for a Tremec five speed, upgraded the seats to 80s Camaro seats, then finally a set of Recaros, and I had a set of six piston caliper Baer brakes and Speedtech spindles sitting in boxes waiting until I had the time and money to install them. And within days of the 31st anniversary of my buying the car, it burned up, along with most of the town of Paradise, and everything else I owned. These days you're looking at spending $10,000 for a hulk of a car when it comes to first gen Camaros, and probably about forty to fifty K to get it where I would want it to be. Or I could buy a 2002 Z06 Corvette for about fifteen K. If I were rich, I'd rather have the '67 Camaro that performs like a Z06, but I'm not, so I'm going to settle for the fun car that I can afford. I love the cars that Mark Stielow builds, but I do not have the skills/resources/money that he does.

I am so sorry to here about your loss.. It hurts just reading it! I have a 2010 SS and have always wanted a Gen 1 Camaro but with the prices I have been pushing it off. I ended up buying a fully built low mile wide body c6 with 30k miles for a good price, and I thought heck yeah! The fast, light weight, Corvette! It is a great car, but I still find myself obsessing with watching videos and checking car prices of first Gen Camaro's. I have come to the conclusion that it is fun to have a 750hp vette, but my eye will always remain on the 1st gen camaros. I will most likely sell the vette in a year or so and buy one when I can save up some extra cash! I hope you enjoy the 2002 corvette if you ended up getting one, they are forsure a bang for your buck at those prices hands down!!!

It's light blue with white racing stripes on it. I will always want to own this car cause it is the best looking car I've ever seen...

As a 26 year old I don’t regret buying a camaro. Very convenient because I live close to a drive in theater. Always get lots of compliments. You shouldn’t own a car like this if you don’t want to put in the work. Mine is a 68 RS camaro with a 327 under the hood.

I had a 1967 Camaro which was a nice car. The weak link was the standard drum brakes, which almost got me killed a couple times. I traded that 67 in on a 1971 Camaro, and it was a better car in all respects. I’m sure some of the higher performance versions of the 1967-69 Camaro were way superior to my 71 with the 350 4-speed, but cost of the car and insurance was prohibitive then and now. Some of the versions you mention, I’ve never seen in person even though I regularly attend car shows.

Ah! Yes! The brakes technology of that era had its shortcomings. I recall seeing smashed-up front ends of first-gen Camaros since its brakes were no match to the engines' horsepower.

I went to a local car show back in 2016 with my newly purchased 57 Black 210. Post all original metal Arizona car that I'd looked for, for years!!! I was 66 at this time and a younger person stopped by commenting my 57 was one of the straightest he'd ever seen,..Thanks!!! After talking to him for quite a while I asked he had a car at the show and he did and we walked over and he showed me his car. I honestly don't. remember what it was ...but I do remember that he said he always wanted... a 69 Z/28 Camaro!!! Soon a lady, that I worked with at a very large company,, walked up and started talking to me and then the car guy that I had just met walked back up and wanted to know how his Mom knew me?? She explained that I was the guy that lived in their old neighborhood that had taken him for a ride in his car because he was so CRAZY about it and she had asked me if I would take him for a ride ,,,and I did., Her sons reply was...I knew I knew you ,,, your the neighbor that I met when you loaned my Dad your brand new Walker floor jack so we could take the worn out 4 speed out of our 66 Corvette and then you rebuilt it for us with spare parts you had.. I still remember you telling my Dad if he put one scratch on the jack he'd have to buy you a new jack, He took very good care of it. The car we went for a ride was my purchased new in 1968, 68 RS Z/28 Camaro.( Sequoia Green w/White Stripes). It's a fairly low (42,000) mile rust free car only because I was starting college and I stored the car and bought a 70 VW to beat around in. The Camaro is still in my Garage and I"m 73. Most people back then sold their cars because gas got expensive and hard to find.

I raced the 302 engine up against 350 on the ovals with identical rules for gear ratio, carbon, headers, intakes on a half mile paved oval. We ran the weight of the cars at 10 lbs per cubic inch. I might have lost only 1/2 a car length to a 350 on the straights. But would make up 2 car lengths in the corners with a car 500 lbs lighter. On tracks with no gear rules I ran the short stroke 1000rpm higher than my competition, and would out accerate a 350 easily on the straight away..

My mom bought a new Camaro in 67. The front end had been smashed while on the lot and she paid 2200.00 for it and the dealership fixed it before she took ownership. It was a 327 two speed automatic with console on the floor. Butternut yellow exterior with a gold vinyl interior. It also had a rear defroster which was just a fan that blew on the rear window. What a great car. Sure wish I had it today.

5:38 the Camaro 350" 295 HP engine didn't have a "high performance tune"... it was just base level heads, base size valves, base level cam... common for the day 10:1 compression ratio (actually about 9.8:1) and the common Q-Jet 4 bbl. carb... Of course, make no mistake, it was fun... especially with a manual shift... in a light car...

Lots and lots of these and firebirds were exported to Europe back in the day. Only those with center consoles. They were ( at the time ) selling for the moon at the NJ dealer auctions where they sold for "as much" as $2500.-$3500 if they were absolutely like new cars, and off to Sweden and other places they went right out of port Elizabeth.
