I would also recommend some GrillGrate sections for searing. I have a separate Weber 28 inch griddle that I purchased last year and keep my griddle tools on the shelf there. This allows the front shelf I previously mentioned and I love the extra space it provides.

One thing I did that I absolutely love is I drilled two holes equally distant apart on the lid and installed two external thermometers. Now I actually have three temperatures that I can read from two thermometers and the temperature probe inside. I don’t have to wonder anymore what the temperatures are across the grill

Allen, I have considered adding external thermometers. If I’m really being anal, I’ll grab my temp gun and temp the grates. The more I use it, the more I’m adjusting to knowing the pit. Thanks for checking in!

I'm thinking of getting the crafted grates and the smaller griddle that goes on that crafted rack seems like a nice option than having to take the big one in and out to use the crafted stuff. Also my pid controller is not starting up correctly I have to unplug and plug it back in almost every time.

Again - great video! My XL 600 is about 1-1/2 months old now. I have the rotisserie, front & side tables, cover, HF magnets, crafted frame kit ... I love this grill so far. For the cover I use a mini handi clamp to fasten it to the shelf. Has worked for a week now. I had the crafted wok already and found the wok rests on the flavorizer bar even with the reducer ring provided with the wok. It wobbles a little but works fine. Now for the griddle, I need to make 6 double smash burgers. I had a 28" Weber griddle and it just fit the burgers so I was sad to see the griddle you have that is recommended by Weber has less area than my 28" griddle. Then I looked at the Crafted griddle. Guess what? Two crafted griddles have a little more area than my 28" griddle. I have used these a few times now and they heat up very quickly. I have found two heat up faster and maintain temperature better than one.
@sambosplace
@sambosplace 6 ай бұрын
Mike, thank you for the support and kind words. Sounds like you have pimped her out well!! It doesn’t surprise me that the double griddle heats and holds temp well. There’s less room for convective heat loss through the open grates. Cheers!

@@sambosplace One more thing I forgot. Once I put the top rack in up-side-down and the handle could burn your hand if you held it. The top rack held the lid up ever so slightly and allowed heat out the front of the cover right on the handle. So got me thinking with my two crafted griddles the handle doesn’t get any hotter than when I’m not using them. Could it you need to reposition your griddle a bit to allow the cover to close tightly?
@sambosplace
@sambosplace 6 ай бұрын
Mike, the big griddle sits flush. Doesn’t prop open the lid. I’m currently discussing SmokeFire Stealth replacement handle with Weber. PN #’s. 64786 and 64739. The mounting holes are the same distance apart.

I wish they had the front shelf in stock. Been a month and still out of stock. I installed work bench raised casters on the front so it’s easier to move around. You press them down and it lifts the legs so you can move it. And unlock it and it lowers the legs back on to the ground. Thinking a drilling couple holes to be able to run the probs inside without having the lid sit on the wires. Love this smoker. Better than my ironwood 885 I had.

Great review! The movie cut scenes are awesome.... I love my searwood. I have several different types of grills (Weber Spirit Gas, Weber Smokey Mountain, and a Santa Maria) What makes the Searwood special is its flexibility and reliability. My Smokefire, which I returned, would have a grease fire or meltdown of some sort any time I tried pushing it over 400 degrees. There are so many cooking options when you combine the Weber Crafted System and a rotisserie. I just did kabobs last night with the rotisserie kabob attachment and it was awesome. As you know, the cleaning is night and day compared to the SF and I am glad I don't have to break out the shop vac anymore.

Just stumbled on your video while looking for Searwood info. I appreciate the detailed review. Very helpful! One question: how is its “set it and forget it” functionality? I love my Weber Smokey Mountain and I actually enjoy playing around with temp control when I have the time, but that’s not always the case. Id love to get something that I don’t have to monitor so closely. If I decide the Searwood is the way to go, I have a little over five months to drop hints for Father’s Day. Any suggestions? Sublety is not required. 😊
@sambosplace
@sambosplace 16 күн бұрын
Happy holidays Larry, thanks for the kind words and for checking in. “Set it and forget it” is 2 fold meaning when compared to stick and box smokers, where temperature control and smoke amount is on you. With a pellet smoker and current PID controller technology, you just set the temp manually or using your phone app, and let it go. The pit takes care of itself. Albeit, you still have to monitor your cooks and temp your food. There are times you may have to fiddle with temp control as I mentioned in my Christmas turkey video, but you’re not babysitting a fire all day. Some guys love that and I used to also when life wasn’t so hectic. Good luck with Father’s Day! Hope it bears fruit!! Cheers!

Another great video. One question.....if you are cooking a load of let's say bacon or other high-fat-releasing food, where does all the grease go? Is there a hole in it so the grease can drain out? The griddles I have used all have drain holes with a grease-catching cup under them. How do you manage that in the Searwood?
@sambosplace
@sambosplace 5 ай бұрын
Mike, thanks for the kind words of support. There’s a huge horizontal grease port along the back. Simply scrape or push the grease towards it. The grease then flows down the back of the pit and actually makes it to the ash pan and grease tray. Surprisingly works better than the SmokeFire and does what it should. Cheers!

Great video again. I have a couple questions for you. What’s the difference between manual mode and 10 versus automatic mode on 600°? Also have you considered converting all the stainless steel grates to cast-iron grates?
@sambosplace
@sambosplace 6 ай бұрын
Allen, thanks for the supportive words. My understanding is manual mode 10 is like an accelerator bypass. You just get full feed and full fan regardless of internal thermometer. 600 will keep temp with the internal probe. And anything lost due to hood open conditions will put the PID in motion to burst the pellet feed and modulate the fan. With manual. Your accelerator is stuck to the floor on 10. I find manual mode is more efficient with the griddle. Thanks for inquiring!

@@sambosplace Not sure if you covered this, but do you have an idea of the quantity of pellets you go through running the grill on 10, say 10# of pellets per 30min? Curious about really how fast you go through pellets if you're doing breakfast on the griddle for 30+ minutes of cooking.
@sambosplace
@sambosplace 3 ай бұрын
Danc, I can’t say for sure how many lbs per minute for 30 minutes. It’s not the most efficient griddle. It does go through the fuel. I didn’t have mine set at 10, 7 I believe for the bacon, I think, if memory serves me, 6 on the eggs. That griddle retains serious heat. You are going to blow thru pellets. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Mark, thanks for checking in. I honestly do not know about stainless grates. I know they make the coated cast iron inserts. Easier to move in my opinion. Have you backpedaled and caught your shin on the bottom shelf with that close handle? That’s eliminated with the side shelf. In my install video I demonstrated moving it with that robust shelf. Matt, sorry to you hear of your SF loss. This pit, knock on wood, has taken everything I can throw at it with no issues. I left it open to cool down and forgot about it, 1.5” downpour through the whole thing, filled the grease pan with water…. No issues. No auger clogs, no PID controller problems. Nothing… only complaints I have are tool management and that she’s not as robust a smoker as my SF was. There, I just jinxed myself…. 😉.

I keep going back and forth between the weber Searwood or the weber Kamado, the Kamado can due about everything that the Searwood can but won't be subject to break like a pellet grill can IE screw the PID controller. Sometimes simple is better
@sambosplace

Brian, I did seriously consider the Kamado, and may add it in to the grill patio one day. I use my SearWood at least 3-4 times per week. Have gone thru over 250 pounds of fuel. No issues. The main difference is set and forget. These China built pits are only going to last 4-5 years. A Kamado should last longer. Pros and cons abound. What works best for your cooks is the question. I really like the Searwood and would have purchased one in a flash BUT, with it having just 2 wheels, it's unfortunately a deal breaker for me. My patio is a very difficult surface to move any grill around and without 4 nice size wheels, it's of no use to me. Sad. Weber certainly dropped the ball on that. I do enjoy your videos (subscribed) and will continue to watch them.

Mike, thanks for the Sub. The smokefire had 4 wheels and it was horrid to move around. Flimsy legs and the casters were garbage. The thing would get hung up on pellets that hit the ground. Was a pain in the dupa just to move in and out of my garage over cement edges. This pit is not so bad to wheel around. For all things it does well, perhaps it could be lived with. I assembled this in my garage, wheeled it up, by myself 3 garage service steps into and across my living room and out to the back deck. Thanks again. Cheers.

Great video! They just delivered my Searwood 600 yesterday, and I got as far as burn-in. During that process, I hoped my neighbor across the back wall didn't mind the smoke or the noise (something like an asphalt paving rig). The thing is heavy! They should have put casters on the left legs. Agreed about the handle! HOT! My Summit doesn't do that. I won't get the rotisserie, because if I want rotisserie chicken, I'll use the one supplied on the Summit and maybe get another smoker box. I like your use of both charcoal & hardwood pellets. I'll try that. I dont care about the griddle, or the pizza stone or wok. I love the flexibilty and concept, and can't wait to do a brisket and pulled pork! 👍🏻
