@@sambosplace I have been in the manufacturing business my whole life, with experience in machining. stamping. welding and heat treating as well as control panels and electronics. I have a bit of a background not saying I know it all thats for sure. these grills seem to be designed to dissolve in 3-5 years just by the material choices.

I was simply answering your question, “who paints stainless” Pit health and longevity depends on many many variables…. Where you cook, how often, at what heat, how often it’s cleaned, to what extent it’s cleaned…. Is it covered? Is in brought indoors, is it used in high humidity…. Etc. So if you think all of these pots will only last a few years, heck, don’t buy one. Steer clear. Right? Cheers.

Good review. Over here in Australia Oklahoma Joes are expensive (we pay a lot more than you do!) so it was interesting to watch and consider. I have their Highland smoker which I enjoy using. You just have to make modifications to make them run better, sealing tape on fire box and grill etc…. I’m certainly not turned off their Firecraft offering. The way I look at it, in an ideal world you would buy a smoker/grill that was absolutely perfect but in reality you wouldn’t be able to afford it. Over here in Australia blokes like tinkering and modifying cars and I think the smoker/grill thing has just become an extension of that and makes you a part of it i.e you made it run better. I find it a bit odd, but if I bought anything else that wasn’t right or played up like some of the Oklahoma Joe complainants put forth, I would be the first to in complain. However, it taps into a certain psyche, I think we put our ‘Casey Jones’ hat on and think, we can fix this up! After all a lot of smokers look like steam trains and who didn’t want to be a steam train driver when we were little boys? Oklahoma Joes aren’t perfect, but they are a lot of fun and I will still probably get their Firecraft.

I've been going down my own rabbit hole of issues with my Sear+ in the last few months. Purchased June 2023 and was flawless until around September, when my auger failed in the exact same manner. Pin was sheared off and remnants were in the shaft. Weber sent a new auger and pin, then the motor failed a month later. Have been working through several other issues with Weber ever since and am now going through all your videos. But so far, this looks very familiar. Thanks for sharing your experience.
@sambosplace

Jim, I’m sad to hear this. And this issue is with the SearWood?? Check to make sure your auger is centered in the tube. My SmokeFire was high at 2 O’clock and the pellet feed was causing too much resistance and then failure. That said…. One of the main questions I had with Jesse C before I chose to stick with Weber, was if the auger/motor assembly was improved. I was told YES…. Then when I received my SearWood, it clearly has the same nut and bolt pin assembly as the SmokeFire. Sad to hear this.

@@sambosplace This issue is with my SmokeFire Sear+ ELX4. Same as the one you had, but the smaller version. I've been a Weber guy for many years, and as you experienced, their customer service is top notch. But I'd prefer to have a grill I can count on. Continuing to work with them to see if we can get this sorted out.

I’m hoping for a sear wood xl stealth version this year they come out with. Then I will buy one. I have heard for more smoke flavor use smokin pecan pellets but they’re expensive.

Dare, I’d bet Weber does offer something similar. If you caught my “Why you should own” video, I discussed options and the Weber crafted insert with reversible sear plate that is easily added. And yes, it does make a difference when searing. Second time I heard about pecan shell pellets. Never tried them. The SearWood is a very capable smoker, although, the PID controller and barrel shape of the Smokefire has a distinct advantage in smoking. But this one does more. Thanks for checking in! Cheers!

@sambosplace
@sambosplace 11 күн бұрын
Robert, within all my research on that topic, it seems it was a combination of grease port failure and customers not keeping up with scraping the grease. The grease gooped up, combined with ash and led to issues that customers didn’t keep up with. Also, the fire box was right there throwing the heat. Poor engineering as well. Knowing the problem is 4/5 problem mitigation. You just had to keep up with it. In my exit video, I measured the firebox to grill grate depth, then compared it to the SearWood. Cheers!

I have the smokefire and turn out some pretty good BBQ. I hate the limitations with pellets. Does the searwood have the same issue where you need to use specific pellets that are smaller in diameter?
@sambosplace
@sambosplace 11 күн бұрын
Mnall, great question. No it does not. And the answer lies in the poorly designed and assembled auger tunnel on the smokefire. Check out my video where I show how the auger is off center and inclined, causing strain and feed issues. I went thru 2 auger pins and a new motor. The SearWood is horizontal and will eat anything you put thru it. Hope this helps. Cheers!

@sambosplace 13 күн бұрын
Klil82. I’m very hesitant to throw in on comparison advice with units I have little to no experience with. Outdoor cooking is a very personal experience. What I might look for out of it, may be drastically different than what you, or others seek. That said, if you’re looking for a pure smoker, then I’d go with the unit that smokes the best. There was a video a couple years back that compared the SmokeFire to very high end and pricy units, like the Yoder and Pits n Spits that blew them away. That video made up my mind on a smoker. I owned a SmokeFire and it’s a slightly better smoker than the SearWood, hands down. However…. If you’re looking for a unit that can do it all, and do it all well, then my experience with the SearWood leans in that direction. Here’s a link to that video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZ6mmpWOmMugp7ssi=MiV1nRsGYoreHn43

Got a SW XL for Xmas from my wife. Setup and burn in was perfect. First cook was some steaks in high heat sear. Weber probe was 70 degrees higher than my instant read thermometer which made this first cook a little off, but steaks were still incredibly tasty. Coming from decades of gas grills, I think this Searwood is here to stay. Gonna have to find out why the probe was so off.

@sambosplace 13 күн бұрын
Elncalls, wow…. What a great gift!! Congrats! I have found disparity in my internal probe as well, but not to that degree. I have found that over time with longer cooks, the difference shrinks and is about 5 degrees off. That said, a Meater or instant read thermometer is your best friend as you stated. The flavors imparted are a win win. You’ll wonder how you ate off gas (which does have its place) all along. Thanks for the supportive words, happy new year! Cheers!

I also love my SearWood!! I tried the charcoal pellets - found the same. I clean mine after every smoke. I have a griddle so I don’t use it for that. I put two work bench casters on mine so I don’t have to pick it up to move it. (The wheels drop so it won’t move when in use.) I have the front shelf not the side. The cover works well for me. The Velcro straps at the bottom are poorly designed but keep it down in the wind. I will put a couple hooks on the back for the top grill. Appreciate your channel content. Pray you get well soon. But, I will definitely stick with Weber because of how their customer service has treated me and you. Also, have you tried the Smokin Pecan Shell Pellets? Just stumbled on your video while looking for Searwood info. I appreciate the detailed review. Very helpful! One question: how is its “set it and forget it” functionality? I love my Weber Smokey Mountain and I actually enjoy playing around with temp control when I have the time, but that’s not always the case. Id love to get something that I don’t have to monitor so closely. If I decide the Searwood is the way to go, I have a little over five months to drop hints for Father’s Day. Any suggestions? Sublety is not required. 😊

@sambosplace 16 күн бұрын
Happy holidays Larry, thanks for the kind words and for checking in. “Set it and forget it” is 2 fold meaning when compared to stick and box smokers, where temperature control and smoke amount is on you. With a pellet smoker and current PID controller technology, you just set the temp manually or using your phone app, and let it go. The pit takes care of itself. Albeit, you still have to monitor your cooks and temp your food. There are times you may have to fiddle with temp control as I mentioned in my Christmas turkey video, but you’re not babysitting a fire all day. Some guys love that and I used to also when life wasn’t so hectic. Good luck with Father’s Day! Hope it bears fruit!! Cheers!

I have this same setup and have been wondering lately… what’s the benefit of a rotisserie when you don’t have a direct heat source? I want do a comparison of two chickens. One on the rotisserie and one directly on the grates. I’m guessing there won’t be a discernible difference? Perhaps less loss of juices from the rotisserie?
@sambosplace
@sambosplace 17 күн бұрын
Sonic, great questions. I have a buddy who swears by spatchcock. Because the SearWood has such even cooking (most likely due to convection) I thought a rotisserie would make the most of the indirect heat, as you mentioned. I just did a second bird last night. Same results. Juicy, tender and well cooked throughout. The brining method really allows the meat to hold moisture. Happy new year! Cheers!

Correctional, if you can lasso the 40% off I got last spring, it’s a helluva deal for incredible control and flavor! Happy holidays! Cheers!!
