Nothing is more irritating than people complaining about mpg of the 2nd gen when they come with a 4.30 rear end. "Let's spend $20-30k more on a new Tundra to save $500/year on gas...."

You Sir are very correct people just can't do math. Not only gas but future repairs to turbos, intercoolers, and all that new untested technology. I'll just stick with the 14 year old one that everything works and will for years.

I went with a 2021 Toyota tundra platinum. It was used 35,000 miles. It already had a clear bra, bed liner, tri fold bed cover, air bags with compressor, genuine transmission cooler, and middle console gun safe. I have owned Chevy, ford, and drive ram daily for work. All those three don’t feel as well built as the 5.7 iforce. Just my opinion. Gas mileage sucks in the 5.7 iforce but you won’t have to pay a mechanic. Everyone forgets, if your truck breaks down, time is money, money is time. Mechanics can charge whatever they want… I complained one time about a mechanic charging too much and he said “ok, that’s fine I’ll just keep your truck…” moral of the story, I would rather pay more at the pump then be at the mercy of crooked mechanics.

Bought my 08 5.7 new and the only issues I have paid for is the age and sun related exterior rubber. Last year I replaced the rubber side window wiper/seals and the rubber antenna bezel. Less than $100 and easy to DIY. It' has a thick white with no clear coat paint job so the annual good wash and wax keeps bringing it back to looking new. Back about when your video was posted I thought seriously of replacing for the same reasons you give and passed. The only problem in the future that would be an equal replacement is no longer available now if it got into a major accident. I am wary of used gen 2 as most people who swap trucks every few years don't take as good of care with their Tundras as I do.

I agree with the design part, but the 22 Tundra's looks has definitely grown on me a lot now; the 3rd gen TRD Pro trim looks badass IMO. I like that 2nd gen offers V8 that's proven and tested. Its exhaust sound is hard to beat as well. However, the 2nd gen's gas mileage is awful... I know they're reliable but 14 mi per gallon is just abysmal by today's standards. I wish Toyota had updated features and comfort in the 2nd gen Tundras and the 5.7-liter V8 had better fuel economy. I'm aware you don't buy full-size pick-ups for MPG. But all other trucks get far better fuel economy than the 2nd gen.

Interesting to see so much confusion about the difference between a facelift and a generation change. Solid video, Love the 2nd gen and would probably go for one due to price point. Saving money on fuel is nice but you’re lying to yourself if you think its making up for an extra 25-30k price difference any time soon lol. Points for the new generation is the platform. Sharing underpinnings with the land cruiser should make for a more well rounded vehicle despite potential issues with new tech and growing pains from a new formula. I recall working at toyota in 2015 and people being bent about the new tacoma and its handful of issues during that generation change and now they’re pretty sorted out.

You have made very good points, but for me: (i) the 2nd gen Tundra is one of the most beautiful half-ton pickups, whereas the 3rd gen is one of the ugliest half-ton trucks; (ii) the 3rd gen will definitely need larger tires as the ones it comes with look ridiculously small. For the 2nd gen, you do not necessarily need to go higher sizes, although it will look even cooler if you do. (iii) You already said it, the price on the 3rd gen is on average 20% higher, which makes the 3rd gen truck not competitive at all compared with the big 3, they are reaching the Raptor territory. (iv) Have you seen the empty buttons/missing button places on both side of the steering wheel? Which reminds you that you have bought a lower trim truck. I have a 2nd gen Limited, which is the mid-range trim, and I do not see a single empty button/missing button. (v) Goodbye Toyota reliability, it will not be there for many years for the 3rd gen. I hope people fix the issues sooner before the 3rd gen get black listed, like no-one should ever buy the 2016 and 2017 Tacoma. One bonus point -- I simply like the simplicity of the 2nd gen truck. I wish Toyota kept making them and call them Tundra Classic like Ram did In couple years we will look for the 2nd gens like we are looking for the FJ Cruiser now.

I do own a 2007 and a 2021 Tundra so, I have to disagree with your statement "improvement over the years". The 2021 does look better that the 2007. However, my 2007 SR5 has more convenient and functional features than my Limited 2021. I had to spend an extra $1000 to install an external transmission cooler, which was standard in my 2007. Unfortunately couldn't wait for the new Tundra, needed another truck so, I bought the 2021. I be looking forward to your reviews on the 2021 since I might get one in a couple of years

Toyota went to a coating on the cylinder wall instead of steel sleeves(FORD went to a plasma coating and since customers have oil consumption problems.) I have a 21 tundra just received it. The 22 Check motor reviewer they said the valves are coated. I would not ever buy a 22 because of the coating. Plus the 22 is just a 3.5v6 with a 331 rear end and a kicker. The 2022 Tundra beats this dinosaur in every single way...better fuel efficiency, better power, better ride/handling, better capability, better technology, and on and on. Toyota has been testing this new platform for over 2 years, twice as long as other brands test new models. They are very serious about launching a near perfect product. Yes, there may be a few minor issues that sneak thru, but they will resolve those things quickly in real time. I would give them 6-8 months for that and to ramp up production, but I would absolutely buy one after summer 2022.
