Why you should change your Xbox One thermal paste...

I've had this Xbox One S for almost 4 years now. For the first time ever, I got an idea of changing out the thermal paste since I knew it was old. I was quite surprised to actually see the state of the thermal paste after these 3 1/2 years. This is why I would suggest you changing out your thermal paste as soon as possible if you feel comfortable with doing so of course...

You would have to apply a lot of force to rip one of those capacitors off, you would be fine scratching off the old thermal paste with your fingernail

I've changed my thermal paste after 7 years and same situation.... I think everyone should do this imidiatenly after waranty expired and change it every 1-2 year, depends offcourse how often you play ;-)

I have one s 2 years and one month after waranty expired it got a problem with start up, when I open it I had same situation as a guy from video.

Me and my launch day Xbox One thicc boi in 2021……….yeah I’ll be tearing it down soon. Never had overheating issues yet, the only noticeable thing is that some heavier games stutter

Mine is still working great. My 1X however just started overheating. Gonna tear it down, clean it and reapply thermal paste to see if that helps or if I need a new fan. So glad I didn't give my X1 to my roommate when I bought my 1X lol

My launch day Xbox one started overheating too. I opened it and cleaned all the dust out, there was a lot. I also replaced the power brick. I think this is next until I can get a series x.

Yup the one i replaced the thermal paste on for my mate last week looked exactly the same. Console was 2,5 years old

Totally right about putting too much. I put too much and my system wouldn’t even start up. Cleaned it up and put just a hair on and boom started right up! Hopefully this helps someone! Go easy on the paste guys!

Would you try to load a game and it would just shutdown due to overheating? Having this issue I tried using like 2 year old thermal paste

Oh wow really? I just did redid the paste and i spread it out evenly over the cpu AND did the same on the heat sink side It's a very thin layer tho You think that's ok?

You should clean your Xbox one most importantly reapply fresh thermal paste on the CPU and GPU chip also do the 12 volt fan mod in addition clean the power brick and the fan

Holy shit my original one sounded like a airplane and was running hot ass hell….. 3 hours later i fired her upp and u cant even hear the fan anymore

I just took apart my One X last night (July 10 2021) and applied that same paste (Corsair TM30). Mine was very dry coming out of the tube but it was a brand new syringe and I’ve no prior experience with applying thermal paste to anything, so I assumed that was normal. I also removed and replaced the thermal pads with Arctic 1.5 mm pieces on the 12 RAM chips and the VRAM line. The Xbox (or it’s fan anyway) is *louder* now than it used to be. So either my “new” thermal paste was too old, it’s an inadequate thermal paste in general, I didn’t apply enough (I used the “spread” method and the entire die was covered so I don’t think it’s a matter of too little thermal paste), or the thermal pads aren’t good. Going to buy Grizzly paste and pads and do it all over again 😩

the people that put these consoles together in factories probably have no idea how to do it properly,yeah sure it will work out of the box but probably not 100% correct in terms of fan noise and thermals. i would always do my own thermal paste when i buy a console from now on..especially now that consols are aiming for 4k 60fps or 120fps! when consols only had to achieve 1080p at 30fps or 60fps it would probably never matter how the thermal paste was applied.

TIM clean is better for cleaning thermal paste, it would dissolve it

1) Wont that dried up thermal paste soften up when the Xbox is powered on and produce heat, especially when playing games? Why is everybody think a thermal paste is bad just because is dried up? I'm not saying that dried up is good, but maybe there's other criteria. 2) I'm more worried about the fact that the APU cannot breathe easy enough since there is so much "paste" on all the sides who stop the heat to go out easily. I think the thermal paste should only be placed on the actual(middle/raised part) of the APU, not to the sides, on the transistors areas. I get that one could think its good for the transistors, since the paste will transfer heat to the copper plate above them, but that will work only if there isnt to much paste and if theres good enough contact to the copper plate.

So I bought a Xbox one x off fb and I’ve been trying a lot of different things to get the video up on screen. I’m trying to change the HDMI retimer chip as I speak and noticed the thermal paste was so dry. While scratching off the paste I noticed something in it that I knew shouldn’t have been there. I threw it away not thinking anything of it. I wish I wouldn’t watched this video first because it was a capacitor now I’m wondering if that was the issue the whole time and now it’s gone😕

I didn’t put any force on any capacitor for that fear of ripping one out I think it wasnt soldered on correctly from manufacture

My Xbox keeps kicking me back to the home screen when I try to run games or apps. I've already done a factory reset and it still does it. Would changing the thermal paste help at all?

I had to take apart my xbox bcuz it kept turning off everytime i booted up a game but not with apps, i thought it was dusty and cleaned everything, even the dried up thermal paste, the thermal paste is coming in today, gonna apply it and see if it was that, if not im fucked lol

It's not like it has to dry or cure. It dries over the years and you want to replace it before it completely dries like that. Good thermal paste will last 3-7 years. Completely depends on the environment and hours of use.

It's super easy if you know how to do it, you can just use a thin screwdriver and stick that in the gap between the pole and the middle of the x and push toward the middle

I don't know, please, but I just scraped my finger off. Like a plastic pin came all off. Don't use weapon, although I'll just give it a nice shine. Make it look clean no three forever said just clean all the surfaces
