About This Video:
I tested the heat and noise level of the Xbox One X. Then I show you how to modify it to make the fan run MUCH quieter. My console was very loud when I played most any game so I decided to modify it. I made temperature and decibel level measurements to see if my mods helped or not.

Your theory is correct. But to see real air temperature increase would mean having the same rpm on fan, if the fan was on the same speed, difference would be lower, but still present. Therefore reduced fan speed can lead to a hotter air output and a better thermal conductor can lead to higher temperatures of heatsinks and lower temperatures of the source. To increase chances for that xbox to work longer without failure would mean to manually increase fan speed to keep APU even cooler under load. But you know all that already :) and I think you just wanted to animate the discussion under video and you got me ;) Cheers

@w3r3wolf

They are normal thermal pads, just shaped in circles. If you need new ones just buy some good ones like over 6W/mK and cut them to pieces that cover whole gddr chip, but first measure their thickness to buy the right one.

@@w3r3wolf no they are not normal they are like clay you can actually reshape them. I tried different thermal pads but non seem to work, either they are too thick or too thin. It feels like Microsoft did this on purpose so you would have to fix your console through them.

The air is hotter due to better heat transfer from the APU which is good!

Heat transfer coefficient of the liquid metal is higher than that of the thermal paste. So it moves more energy(heat) to the heat sink. Increasing the temperature of the heat sink also increases the difference in temperature between the heat sink and ambient air which allows for better cooling even at lower air flow speed (slower fan).

Well done & your thoughts in my opinion are correct. More heat transfer with LM therefore higher temps on air flowing out & slower fan speed since lower overall temps on components.

Thank you for your KZbin videos! I like it and it is a big help for me. I'm also trying to optimize the cooling of my XBOX ONE X and PS4PRO. I believe there are many possible reasons why the output air is getting so hot with the new thermal paste. 1. The transport of the heat is better. 2. The area where the thermal sensors checks the temperature gets better cooling, so the fan runs slower and other parts without thermal sensors getting hotter. Would be nice to know. You could only find out if you check the temperature of more areas of the Xbox before your optimization and after. For example with a thermal cam or extra sensors. I would do it, but I dont't have the equipment. Sorry! My optimized XBOX ONE X: - Thermalpaste Grizzly Kryonaut - Thermalpads Grizzly Minuspad 8, 2mm My XBOX is still getting warm but it is also quiet. It was and is more quiet than my optimized PS4PRO. Sorry that I don't have the epuipment to check noise and temp. Would also be nice to know what you get with my thermal pads. If you want, I can post you what I did to my PS4Pro. There was a lot more to do. ;)

Hotter the air, and slower the means the cooling solution was more efficient and didn't need to ramp up the airflow to blow out the excess heat, that being said if your xbox is getting super loud and the air temp being expelled is semi cool, means the efficiency is too low for the system to effectively remove the heat.

More heat is being pulled away from the apu, however i believe the airflow on the xbox one x is also directed over the psu so my concern would be that some of this hotter air will get pushed onto the psu as it travels over the apu. A thermal imaging camera would be the way to really know whats going on here. Would be interested to see that. All the same great video. Thanks

@Gaj I've always said air blowing over a heatsink is more effective than trying to suck the air away but while your talking about Microsoft, they obviously thought the psu needed some cooling as they designed it to have air blowing onto it. That really was my point and as you say they run hot anyway so more hot air isn't going to help much.

This really needed new thermal pads too. It makes a big difference. At least the ones on here were in okay shape and placed correctly so they were probably okay. Some of the ones on mine were barely touching the chips and one crumbled and was loose inside the Xbox. I don't like liquid metal due to its destructive nature and the slim margin for error. A good solid thermal paste like Noctua NT-H1 or Arctic Ceramique 2 will do 99% of the job with less risk, less expense, and easier application and cleanup. Also, these consoles benefit a LOT from an internal SSD and you might as well make that an upgrade too and make it a budget 2TB like a Samsung 870 Evo or something. All of that really takes the One X to the next level.

i did my xbox one x i just used thermal paste and replaced the thermal pads as well as it a 3 years old and they were dry and cracking so doing this is worth it a lot. The noise before this was blowing full speed when on games like new cod and 4k games now i redid it fan does not speed up as much and warmer air out the back. so the warmer the air out the back the better it at cooling it down. this is a must for consoles that are out of warranty and old advise not to do it in warranty as it will void it so if anything breaks in future bare that in mind.

My thoughts: The fan is turning slower. Less air means the temperature will be higher for any given amount of power. Cooling fan controllers generally employ a rather generous hysteresis. A steady fan speed noise is less noticeable than a constantly changing one. Your thermal paste mod probably keeps you right under the temperature the fan controller needs to speed up the fan.

I had similar results with my Xbox one. its the fat version but the updated one. I noticed the fans started kicking on more often and the system never (I mean never felt hot at all even new). I took it apart and the original thermal paste was just starting to harden up (still paste just alittle dry) so I put so Arctic silver in it and dusted off the fan blades/heatsink. the fans rarely kick on and exhaust temps are quite hot now. heat transfer is much more efficient. meaning the fan doesn't have to compensate anymore.

Should test the difference with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut vs the stock paste. Much safer for most people to use and doesn't need to be replaced over time. Also the wolfenstein 2: colossus demo works great to check console noise. Right when you get the guns you can sit there and it will ramp up the fan in a few minutes.(manual save for quick reloads) If you really want to max out the fan move to the next room and shoot the oxygen tanks point blank.

I think the reason its warmer is the heat sensor is under the chip or in the chip (just guessing) not on the cooler, with better transfer of heat it does not detect the heat on the chip, with the heat not being picked up by the sensor the fan profile wont increase the fan speed causing the heatsink to heat up, that could cause other parts in the console to run warmer. I wonder if that could cause issues with caps or other components going bad over time because of the increased heat.
@Recon_19D3x
@Recon_19D3x 5 жыл бұрын
Yep. Same thought here more or less. It's hotter now because the chip is running cooler but that's causing the fan rpm to be slower also why it's quieter. However the system has no other air mover and because it's allowing hotter air to exist on the heatsink and other components, you might be at a higher risk now of a premature system failure.

It always disappoints me when I see folks using the silicone conformal coatings for this type of application and not the acrylic ones. They both do the same job but the acrylic type is significantly more dielectric which is a trait one would want for protection while using liquid metals. While the silicone types offer better durability (does not really effect longevity) unless it comes in physical contact with a lot of things for example a server that is coated and frequently pulled out and handled by hand. For folks who are paranoid even after using a conformal coating you can also put a layer of kapton tape over it which will also add significantly more electrical insulation and can easily handle the heat produced by a GPU die.

Its more time exposed to heat sink before being removed .the question i would like answered is why is fan running slower . Liquid metal is just more efficient because it makes better contact less heat on the chip more heat on the heatsink the sensor is on the chip so if the chip is staying cool then the fan isn’t spinning fast..with thermal paste the chip has high temps and the fan kicks in fast and only cools the heatsink lol simple that’s why you have higher numbers...if you where able to measure the temp in the chip you will see that is actually cooler even if the heatsink has higher temps..

@@Tronicsfix because the thermal paste is of poor quality, the vapor chamber heatsink is an old but efficient design but any heatsink will be poor with a basic mass produced cheap thermal paste on any console and mass produced pc, thats why a lot of modders pc maker's always buy aftermarket thermal paste.

Is there an aftermarket drop-in replacement fan? I think the one in my Scorpio edition is dying and I'd like to find a new fan. Stfw isn't bringing up anything immediately useful as an Xbox One X fan replacement. Because while I'm in there doing the thermal coupling I might as well do the fan and swap out the drive for an SSHD.

Why not to use regular good quality thermo compound like Gelid GC Extreme or Noctua? That's not a highly overcloocked CPU and don't required liquid metal. With good thermal paste final effect will be the same but cheaper, easier and saver.

Theory correct, did this to mine. The fan will only ramp up when the cpu is at about 70oC (toasty), the liquid metal will conduct heat much better than the goup so super low fan speed and more heat out.

My issue with using liquid metal on consoles is that I can't see temps of each individual core. I use liquid metal on my Intel CPU and I had to adjust the amount of liquid metal because 2 of the cores were running hot than compared to the rest. If I could throughly test consoles like you can with PC I would do it. Edit: I did however replace the stock thermal paste with Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste on my Xbox.

I've been wanting to know the answer to that, is the temperature of the chipset calculated within the chipset or is there a thermostat somewhere attached to the heat sink that determines when the cooling fan kicks in?
@flekkzo
@flekkzo 4 жыл бұрын
WhatTheDeuce47 D afaik it’s the chip itself. Then that reports to something on the motherboard that tells the fan to spin faster/slower. Basically the chip is cooler (more heat transferred) so the fan runs slower. In theory the calibration could be off at this point (do we want the heat sink to be that warm?) so the fan should run a bit faster, but I am seriously out of my depth when it comes to thermal science and computing.

That depends on how expensive they are. Yes, they aren't as accurate as some other ways of testing and the temps could vary by a couple of degrees but since I'm taking multiple measurements during each test and measuring the same way it should give accurate enough results to make a determinination.
