My son was not excited that he had to be in band. We had an instrument fitting with the instructor who told him he was waiting for the perfect kid to play the tuba and my son was that kid. We watched this exact video and now my son is so excited! Thank you Navy Band and thank you for your service!

I wrote "baritone/tuba" as my 3rd choice in band this year and when my director read that, I was pretty much got tuba on the spot because I'm the biggest person in my band class, and our band is so small many of us are the only instrument in our section, this is gonna be a fun year...

there are three super tall kids in my band class me being the shortest of them, the tallest plays flute and the second tallest and i are tubas

Cool, so turns out 2 years on trumpet and 6 months on trombone was all the experience I needed to be decent on a tuba, and it was a fun year, sure some of the songs we played sounded like our band director had them in the bottom of her filing cabinet for 30 something years and nobody remembered them, but some of them were fun and I enjoyed tuba a lot this year.

@@awildjared1396 You have a range similar to trombone, you can read bass clef while knowing trumpet fingerings which are the same as tuba/baritone. And trombone slide positions

@@awildjared1396 I started playing trombone a year ago, and then trumpet this past fall. I just started on euphonium, in part to see if I could 'graduate' to a tuba later on. I'm an older, skinny guy so I have to be sure I 'have enough air' for a tuba.

I was the smallest kid in the whole school, but WANTED to play the tuba. I was OVERJOYED when I got my wish! That was 72 years ago! I'm still playing, and still enjoying it at the ripe old age of 82!

This instrument is kind of special to me because my mom actually marched with it in the Outback bowl in Florida in 1999.

Started playing tuba nearly 20 years ago. Life’s been rough and I haven’t played the horn in nearly two years (have played loads of guitar in the interim though). Always had valve issues on a horn I paid good money for, tinkered for a couple hours today and have the valves playing the smoothest they ever have. It’s 2 am so I can’t play, but I did French kiss the mouth piece while doing some fingering. I sure need to build endurance in my fingers, but I look forward to come back to the instrument that began my musical journey. I feel I’ve grown plenty as a musician since I last played so I can’t wait to give it some doots in the morning!

The reasons I chose tuba was because in 6th grade I was kinda small so I wanted to play a big instrument just because. So we went to the school to try some instruments before orientation day and I didn't want to try percussion because we were only allowed to try on a practice pad. I tried tuba and euphonium, and what may have been the only reason that stopped me from playing euphonium was because I didn't like the smell of the euphonium I tried. I am now a freshman in high school who plays the tuba and makes fun of the euphoniums, one of my greatest band achievements ever was in 8th grade when I was the only tuba player in my grade and convinced 13 new 6th graders to play tuba just by playing for them (they couldn't try the instrument themselves because it was during COVID)

I met Mr. Hicks at a towson honor band master class and he was the dedicated tuba teacher I believe, and I had absolutely zero idea he was a tuba player in the Navy band.

It is pretty common in the US, in other parts of the world (mostly Europe), we play a lot of BBb tubas as our contrabass instrument (also in military bands).

Idk about military but it's the standard in large orchestras. For lighter stuff they usually use F tubas.

My dad, the submariner , felt being a tuba player was a waste of time and did not support me. Then again he was always out to sea so he didn’t support much. Anyway. I missed playing my tuba out of high school and never picked it up again.

You definitely should, even if the tuba doesn't strike the most apeal, it can bring much joy, I do t k iw how much you have with experience. But all I can really say, is that the tuba is very versatile, and very fun to play. As you already know. And learning new techniques is always fun. Yeah, tuba doesn't have the biggest repertoire, but in what is there, it is really fun to play. 😁

How do you play vibrato on tuba i cant figure it out

To play vibrato, you can either use an up and down motion with your jaw, or kind of move your air flow with your tongue or throat. Best is #1 because it allows you to not risk on saliva.

If it sounds good, then there's no need to worry about puffing your cheeks. You need to do what sounds good, this guy in the video won an audition against many players to get where he is. I have a feeling his cheek puffing didn't get in his way.

If we are being completely honest, tuba is easy to an extent, its very hard to get good tone quality, with such big mouth piece. And yeah the music is easy to read, but its those easy things that messes us up all the time.
