The best side hustle is doing something you already do. For example a Recruiter that writes resumes on the side or IT professional that builds custom PCs. Your primary job lets customers know that you will be providing quality work.

It's funny! A "side-hustle" used to be called "moonlighting." My grandfather said that moonlighting was frowned on. Why? Because it insinuated you were bad with money. In the 1950s-60s, you were supposed to make enough money with your 40 hr week union job to make ends meet. Today, we have people with good jobs having to "side-hustle" because their 40-50hr week primary job can't provide the basics, i.e, an apartment, food, utilities, and student loans. Though, it does feel good to know you don't just rely on one revenue source that could easily be cut-off. Spreading the risk! Thoughts?

I f-ing love American mindset! I live and work in London and here having a side hustle (unless it's collecting stamps) is seen as a huge red flag by the majority of employers while when I meet MDs from major US banks - they'd often run massive projects or businesses outside work. I really do see why so many people boarded the Mayflower and left the UK!
@Talishar
@Talishar 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, it's a big red flag in the States as well as many employers see it as the employee splitting their focus and it in turn, puts management focus on your performance. It gives them an excuse to start looking where before, you'd be just another cog flying under the radar. It can be also be seen as disloyalty and in some companies, outside work is expressly forbidden.

I've had a side hustle for the last 3 years and have many times considered if it is worth keeping up as it's pretty boring. But it's kept my resume free of gaps and given me some extra income. Just recently I left my main job as staffing issues were making my job excessively stressful and dangerous. But after getting an offer in a new organisation from the store manager, HR pulled a 180 on me and left me without a main job due a previous injury that had no bearing on my ability to do the work. I just found a replacement for that one too, but after talking up ft potential, the reality is the manager is offering pathetic hours and he disregarded my availability that we agreed upon (family commitments on Sunday's) and has rostered me on for those days. So in essence I've had 2 replacement jobs fall through in as many months and with Xmas just around the corner likely won't find a 3rd one until mid January. So good to have that 2nd income source.

@Talishar
@Talishar 3 жыл бұрын
In another response he describes them as "passive income streams" and this is probably why some of those side hustles fail and collapse in on themselves. They all require some constant focus and effort to maintain them, lest you lose them. Nothing is free, you pay for it one way or another. If not with a capital investment, then you're doing it with a time investment.

Side hustles are great for stuff that is easy ie mowing lawns, driving for uber etc or doing stuff you already know ie tutoring math or teaching piano etc. But, if it involves a few months minimum to learn, I think people get caught in a 'i'm gonna learn a...no b....no c..' trap and they end up not mastering any of those skills. At some points I think you have to focus on one thing, learn it and then focus on another thing and learn that. Otherwise you're chasing your own tail. A Life After Layoff, could you possible discuss this in one of your videos? I would love to hear you thoughts.

Great content as always, Bryan. Thank you! I stumbled on your channel about a month ago and have appreciated your honesty and willingness to offer value without the fluff. In addition to a FT position, I've run a video production business on the side for about six years now, so I agree with what you've covered in this video. That said, I am casually looking for other FT opportunities, and I wonder if my LI profile and website scare potential recruiters and employers off (seeing that I have a strong entrepreneurial focus). Is it possible for recruiters and employers to avoid candidates they feel might not be completely devoted to their FT position, or do you believe that in this day and age most of them have come to accept that many professionals have multiple streams of income? Again, thanks so much for the insightful content you're churning out.

It's also dependent on how much free time you really have. Nothing is free. You either have to pay for it in investment capital, investment of time, or both. If you're working fulltime+, you're probably not going to have the time to chase a side hustle. Then again, we now have this modern concept of NSFW. It's something that totally confounds me as I then wonder, "where in the hell do you have time during work to be browsing the internet?" It's something that shouldn't even exist conceptually, but at least on the concept of a joke, it exists. People everywhere are saying that they're on the verge of being overwhelmed with extra tasks and companies trying to operate "lean" and doing more with less, yet they seem to also have spare time floating around to browse the internet at work and run the risk of looking at things they shouldn't be at work. I hope some people can see how we as a society, seem to be sending some really mixed messages here?

I started a "side hustle" of selling pelican cases. I bought a bunch of them from a government auction, picked them up from a company that buys tons of them, and they offered to keep selling to me in bulk if I want. I'm also thinking about breeding and selling wiener dogs and possibly ackie monitors. Getting laid off last year and looking at my current job prospects fills me with dread so I want to try making my own money instead while I go to college.

I got myself a small side hustle completely by mistake. I thought woodworking would be a nice creative hobby, and I could make some small furniture pieces for my family once I had built up the necessary skill and confidence. Well turns out the skills needed ate developed REALLY quickly, and I had an idea for a small art piece that I made out of pallets that my main job was going to throw away. I am a mechanic who has had the same thing happen. Places shutdown, you quit or get canned, place closes. I've had employers question it, but never been denied for small gaps. Just be honest, tell them how it went down. Also, I have never been unemployed more than a month because my skills are in demand. They can see your previous employment in disa background checks, also. Have to have those to work in plants and refineries. I've had no problems with it in my 21 year career. Find something that has an employee shortage, and get good at it. You will always have work. I also do side work out of my two trucks when necessary. Got to be willing to do the shit no one else wants to do.

Can't really do that when your employer has everyone sign a "no compete" clause. As a civil engineer, that world is pretty small. A better idea is actively managing your money instead of passively throwing cash into a 401K. Some of us would rather have that extra time with family and friends. That said, it's good advice for younger kids without families. Spend your time getting ahead instead of falling behind.
