I have been a 1,000 mile a year cyclist for the last ten years. I always wore cotton tee shirts and Dickies brand work pants (due to their loose fit) and cut off pant/shorts in summer (like in my profile pic) This spring I started wearing cycling specific kit and I love it. I gained about 1 mph (1.6kph) average speed for the same effort. Those tee shirt and pant legs flapping in the wind were little drag parasites!

1. Aerodynamics: Lycra is still less aerodynamic than simply riding naked 2. Comfort: No tailored jersey can come close to the comfort of riding naked, no matter the position 3. Chafing: Riding naked has zero chafe 4. Pockets: Okay, jerseys have an advantage here 5. Visibility: Nothing is as visible as a naked guy on an $8000 bike

Honestly, the main thing that sold me on cycling jerseys were the pockets. I learned this the hard way when I went out riding with a partner, left my phone in the car because I had no way to carry them, and when we separated because she got a flat, I had no way of contacting her, couldn't find her for 40 minutes, and was convinced she got hit by a car and died. Needless to say, I was so freaked out I immediately went home and bought a jersey afterwards

back in the days when I was 16 (many many years ago 1968) I started racing in an Army team ... my mum thought it would be a good idea, and knitted me a woolen jersey with a 6 inch zip and pockets on the back ... got the plan & idea from watching racing on TV ... needless to say I didn't wear it (a bit itchy) except to try it on for size ... but that's how mothers support their sons :-)

I love my cycling jerseys. I prefer a full zip. I have about 50/50 shorts and bibs so it's nice to not have to think about which jersey I'm pairing with which shorts. I like to have three back pockets with a small zip pocket nestled in one of them for my keys. I like it when the accents are on the pockets since it's figure flattering. I look for UPF. I really want to get a summer weight long sleeve jersey. For now, I'm using sun sleeves. I went through a period where I had to gain some weight and now I'm losing but I need to wait and see where my body settles before spending $$$ on new kit.

As a mountain biker I've never saw a purpose in wearing a jersey. I don't race. My biking is purely recreational so the need for aerodynamics isn't necessary. My T-shirts have never caused chaffing, but they do collect a lot of sweat. I sweat a lot and honestly i think my jersey would be drenched in sweat too after riding. Plus i bring an extra shirt to change into after riding. Also, I don't need my shirt having pockets. I wear a hydration pack with plenty of pockets to hold whatever i need. Does it get heavy on my back? Yes, but I can't stand water bottles. They don't stay cold and they get dirty while riding. Plus I need it to hold my keys, wallet, phone, tools, etc... I can see why road bikers would need a jersey but i just think it's unnecessary for recreational mountain bikers. Plus I can buy 3 to 5 shirts for the price of one jersey. So I think after 26 years of mountain biking my opinion remains the same. I think jerseys are unnecessary for recreational mountain bikers and I tend to think for myself and not follow what every one else is doing. And the same goes for those expensive biking shorts. I'm not talking about the padded spandex shirts. Those are necessary. I'm talking about the fancy biking shorts that mountain bikes wear over their padded shorts. Again, I can buy 3 to5 pairs of shorts (that won't snag on the seat) for the price of 1 pair of fancy biking shorts. Some people just buy this stuff because that's what everyone wears. Gotta fit in I guess lol.

Not good for fat people like me. I was massively overweight after almost 25 years of no cycling. I was very rounded when I started cycling again. I went to the largest cycling shop in Bonn and all of the largest cycling jerseys had to just stretch around my belly. Nothing in a bike shop is made for fat people. So for the first half a year I just wore T-shirts, which is much better if you're fat. Now I've lost allot of weight and I can now fit into the largest cycling jerseys and they are better when you're thinner but not when you're fatter.

The best fit and the most comfortable ride is the Castelli San Remo skin suit. The way it is tailored, most people do not even realize that it is a one-piece garment, and they do not see me as too dedicated :-) Yet, its aero properties are outstanding. Even on lazy solo rides (that would be something like 200W normalized power), it makes me noticeably faster than a regular kit.
@ibegeebee4 жыл бұрын
Agree on the speed suit. Not just about the extra aero, but the comfort! No rubbing of bib straps or the base layer rucking up under the straps if it gets a little sweaty. They’re great for long rolling rides and for shorter sprint-filled outings. The only downside is that they don’t cost less than the equiv jersey/bib combo and if you ruin one half, the whole thing is gone.
@ResilientTim4 жыл бұрын
Wear what is comfortable first and foremost. If that is an often over-priced Jersey or a shirt from your favorite marathon, go for it. Personally I sport either a jersey, long sleave sun shirt, or something that allows for ventilation. Pending on the distance, a hydration pack or ultravest is worn for more water and nutrition. Besides nothing feels better than a hydration pack filled with ice on the back on those hot summer days.

I wear Nike's compression tank tops for cycling in the hot summers of Arabia. It can be a good readily available alternative.

Don't like how long the sleeves are because looks a little silly when wearing a top that's supposed to have short sleeves yet its nearly covering your elbow the sleeves supposed to be halfway on the bicep muscles and triceps.

Dan Loyd would give away a Kindom for have a jersey as Conor with stripes. Great video and a GCN jersey would be perfect now :)

The main problem I have with cycling jerseys and their price is that isn't about the price of one, but rather the price of six, and six sets of shorts, for commuting five days a week, and a weekend ride. Washing midweek is hard due to a hectic work schedule, which the commutes provide a mental break from, but at quite to cost. Just to clarify, I like commutes to be fast and at least 15km one way so more casual clothes do get uncomfortable. Still searching for that middle tier of cheaper and good enough for 30km, times five, then the fancy kit for a couple hours or longer know the weekend. Any suggestions?

What are your suggestions for someone that’s a bit larger and doesn’t really like the tight fit?

I do own Cycling Jerseys, but all of them are too long. I have broad shoulders and do hit the gym for my upper body - this means even if it is stretchable that a few jerseys are just cutting into my arms and are too narrow on the shoulders - which means I will have to buy a bigger size than intended and therefore the jersey is too long. Pretty frustrating all in all

jersey is not an investment, it's a cost! unless you are racing and winning money, then you probably could speak about investing in a better gear if it pays off

I just have 2 jercey and I always won race here in my country and my jersey are cheap I don't need to invest on real expensive jercey cause I'm not a real cyclist it's just a hobby

One of the first things I got after my refurbed steel 1970s Peugeot Elan-GT. The bike is blue and the jersey is racing green. We make quite the pair commuting 10miles each way through central London. On a side note, I do laugh at the commuters on carbon frames. You’re not doing the tour d France mate.

Some cool brands: MAAP Pas Normal Studios (AMAZING but ridiculously expensive) Le Col Rapha (requires a mullet and a moustache to look cool) God and Famous (really like this one) La Passione (not as flashy but unbeatable in price and quality) Isadore Pedal Mafia ...

All that kit to head to the shops? I don’t ride for speed or train or anything like that. I do it to clear my head. Bib shorts are fine (unless you’ve got buns of steel), shoes, helmet, and a good wicking t-shirt does nicely. Plus, with my shape, I’d look like a badly stuffed sausage, and I am too self conscious about it. If you want a Jersey, get one. If not, a t-shirt is fine.
