To cut a guy down for pulling a 'post hit' to that area is sorta mean.He did a Great job pulling with welded tips and pulling.The over grinding hurt the fix though.There's no 'Before' pictures,but as a body worker;That hit a pole sideways' and the 1st guy tried hard,but it was too far gone.Don't cut a guy for trying.Kudos for the panel cut in and welds V.

Although this is a way better repair than the one at first, it's still pretty shady if you are going by the book. For example no primer on spots, no glue in wheel well, and not to mention as the oem manual says, you cant change half of a qp. You will still need more bondo than if you used a new complete qp. I've been doing factory approved repairs for years.

About that clickbait title...the previous repair (spotter puller) was never gonna be the proper way to fix such damage. You were probably given just what you have asked for. On the other hand, great job on separating panels (wish my spot weld game was that precise) and fitting/measuring them back. The spray "primer" tho...such car deserves some 2k epoxy base + primer, but thats just me, since I would be afraid, that spray shit lifts at some point further in the paint job.

While your work looks nice, you overlooked one critical point, you never put a weld seam on a day light opening(glass) mounting flange, because you will end up getting leaks. If you replace the quarter panel, you have to do the whole thing, which is a lot of work, but the only way to ensure that the quarter side glass does not leak. If this were your car, and not your friend’s car, would you have approved this work if the body shop did this amateur work? If this were my car, I certainly wouldn’t.

I can’t speak for the body man, but as a stamping engineer in the automotive industry I can say that this amateur repair is easily detected by observing the light reflectivity of the painted panel, particularly if the panel is painted black. Unfortunately, this repair violates the design and manufacturing of the vehicle body structure against water intrusion, by putting a weld line across sealing flanges, and in itself is a second rate job. The only viable body repair for this job is to replace the majority of the body panel, or pulling the panel out, depending upon the decision of the insurance rep, the body shop, and the car owner.
@alshotrodsandratrods8780
@alshotrodsandratrods8780 2 жыл бұрын
@@jvaubry This isn't an amateur repair. Ben's a professional body man. As a body man myself I can tell that this is an excellent repair and I'm sure Ben used seam sealer around the repair. Even if this was black you wouldn't see it in the reflection. Replacing the entire panel would require more welding and be harder to hide. Part of being a good body man is making an undetectable repair. That means making sure it doesn't show in the reflection. I've made stampings for small appliances. Toasters, can openers, blenders etc. As a mechanical engineer I've designed machinery and improved on existing designs and manufacturing systems. Body work was a hobby till I opened my own body shop. Today we're cutting up a 50 Buick sedan and turning it into a roadster pickup. It will be on my channel tomorrow. You can check it out and offer your criticism. I'm always open to suggestions.
@jvaubry
@jvaubry 2 жыл бұрын
@@alshotrodsandratrods8780 I agree with you that replacing the quarter panel would not be the preferred approach and that is why the insurance adjuster and the body shop attempted to pull out the panel. Anytime you cut an exterior closure panel you risk exposing the interior of the body structure to water intrusion. Generally, only the closure panels are manufactured with sheet steel that is galvanized for corrosion resistance at the mill.The interior structure panels are usually manufactured with bare sheet steel, which has minimal rust inhibitor applied during the dip for the body in white. For new car/truck designs, because these parts will never be exposed to water intrusion due to the way water intrusion is managed in the design and assembly of the body-in-white, unless these parts are exposed to water intrusion as a result of poor collision repair practices, such as this repair of putting weld lines across sealing planes. If water gets inside the body structure, the interior sheet metal parts will begin to corrode either through direct contact with the water, or indirectly as the water increases the humidity level of the air inside the body structure. When an oem builds thousands of vehicles for sale, water intrusion is a very serious design issue and if improperly managed at the design and manufacturing level of the body-in-white, can result in costly recalls to the oem.
@jvaubry
@jvaubry 2 жыл бұрын
@@alshotrodsandratrods8780 regarding defects in stamped panels, let me tell you that you can definitely see such imperfections in the panel when you have weld lines on panels. This is why you don’t manufacture closure panels from TWB(tailor-welded blanks) because the weld lines will show up under the paint. Seam sealer will not hide this because the light reflectivity picks up on the minutest distortion in the panel surface, whether due to heat from the weld or imperfections in the surface. This is why in the stamping industry a panel stamping is painted gloss black and observed under a halo of fluorescent lights to visually use the light reflections to look for surface defects in the panel, such as lows in the surface around door handle pockets, window corners at the belt-line, and fuel filler doors, etc. you can even see where the panel did not get enough stretch during the stamping operation. Not to diminish your expertise as a professional body man, but you are probably not as trained as I have been in the stamping industry to visually see these surface imperfections in stamped panels.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. :-(!!!!!

Why bother with a bent frame? The structure becomes weak after multiple bends. I wouldn't trust a bent frame. I believe that's why vehicles with damaged frames are titled as rebuilt. A giant red flag for anyone.

Guy who did previous job, he spend big hours for nothing... I'm not blaming anyone, but... I guess that is an older man who thinks that quarter of inch is ok.

curious why the new panel option wasn't sought out first....how many man-hours @ $100/hr? Curious what happened to the red car for it provide the quarter panel? Might as we sound deaden the door while you're in there.....

I have NEVER seen someone section a quarter through a fuel door. Also boys…don’t think you are gonna pick up a copart wreck and fix it in your garage. You can get in over your head fast.
