You kinda wine when you talk to your subscribers you act like we are your students you seem to make others feel like they are stupid. You talk with your hands. I make my own products I formulate my products it’s not as hard as you seem to make it out to be. Anne Marie that owns Bramble Berry has been doing this for many many years and she is actually the one that taught me and the way you teach people is so confusing and the way you explain it is just crazy it’s not that complicated really. Those people on Pinterest don’t sell their products they make it for themselves so it’s not a problem so why should it bother you how they make their products? KZbin has people doing it the same way. Ann Marie never holds the water and oil phase for 20 minutes before combining and stick blending to emulsify and she uses a microwave to melt her butters and I do the same thing I was taught by the best and I have never had a customer return a product nor have I ever had a product go bad. Nobody does everything the same way you have a business you sell stuff Pinterest is people that mostly make it for their own personal use.

I most certainly don't see any of you as stupid or as my students. That is absurd. I have plenty of viewers who are phenomenal formulators who I learn from everyday. If I sound like I'm whining I apologize, maybe that is something I need to work on. Sorry that I talk with my hands, I'm sure that can be annoying as well. I'll try working on it. You are entitled to your own opinion on me and I respect that. My videos will never be for everybody nor will I as a person & I do apologize for that. I'm okay with the fact that you don't like how I explain things, I think I could do better myself, which is exactly why I chose to redo my "formulating for beginners series" I have many qualities that aren't great that need improved and I will continue to better myself. So I appreciate your input. & no formulating isn't that complicating, but you don't see the amount of messages I get from people everyday confused and not understanding how to formulate. It may not be complicating to you or I, but tons of people just don't understand formulating. Those are the people I am talking to, not more advanced formulators like yourself who already understand the foundation of formulating. I'm just trying my best to make things as clear as possible as I know I have a lot of people that watch my videos who's first language is not English. Maybe the people on pinterest aren't selling their products, But I have had several people tell me that this is where they learned how to make skincare products and they actually use to sell those types of products they see of pinterest. There is someone in this very comment section of this video who said this. Maybe Ann Marie doesn't hold for 20 minutes and I'm sure she is a great formulator, but from my research I have found that holding for 20 minutes is suppose to help create a more stable emulsion. Of course I have heard other arguments, but I choose to share the "holding for 20 minutes" method just in case, so my viewers are less likely to have a failed emulsion. Also I don't use a microwave, because I have heard arguments that it isn't good for certain ingredients. & of course you can do as you please, but I would rather be safe than sorry when it comes to spreading information to my viewers. Everyone watching my videos has a right to their own opinions, just like you do & I respect that.

If you’re so skilled, learned from the best why are you watching her beginners class video??? And being a hater on top of that 🙄you’re just not her target audience! For example, Years ago when I first started selling products, I was literally selling honey, coconut oil & sugar in a mason jar which is a formula I found online and worked for me, but is not safe to keep stored or selling. With more schooling & learning hands on from experienced formulators my brand is thriving now. I don’t agree with everything Tara says either but I love watching her videos bc she’s so passionate, and you never know who you can learn from!

I have been watching Tara for years and I ALSO formulate my own cosmetics and I have never felt that she talk to subs like they are "stupid" KEYWORD in this video as she speaks BEGINNER. It is very rude to judge someone based on what you take from the video. Also formulating skincare the correct way can be complicated unless your copying others! I happen to formulate my own by formulating, testing, and knowing all the correct elements of every raw material and ingredient as well as how it works and why it wants to be used!! Tara does a great job and the option to NOT watch her videos arw always open..

It's 2023 & My mom suffers from extreme eczema in her hands. Dermatologists prescribe her things that make her flare-ups a lot worse. I decided to take it upon myself to do research to find ways where she can enjoy fragrant, enriched lotions for her hands. She found out she is allergic to parabens, fragrances, and other chemicals that are commonly found in every product that she still LOVES... I started with non-fragrant body butter and it seems to be really helping her and she says "you should make this and sell it to people" and now I am binge-watching your channel, studying, taking notes, and designing a logo for my coming soon skincare line. You've helped so much & I wanted you to know it. You're a wonderful teacher and seem passionate to spread knowledge to people who were once like you.. dreaming BIG. Keep doing what you're doing and hopefully once I get things up and running. I would love your feedback!

I wanna make this clear. Sorry if I didn't make it clear enough in the video. If the people on pinterest who are posting these DIY recipes want to keep using them and making them, that's fine. Obviously they can do what they want. The reason I felt this video was necessary to make wasn't to hate on the pinterest DIY's, it was to make my viewers aware that I don't recommend making these types of recipes because they aren't safe. A lot of people will come across these pinterest DIY's and think they are safe enough and stable enough to actually sell. This is basically just a PSA to those of you who want to sell skincare products and formulate products professionally. Also I can't even say how many comments I've gotten from people asking me why I don't just measure in cups like every other skincare DIYer and "why do I have to use so many complicated ingredients". This video was meant to address all these questions. now when I get comments from people saying these things I can just refer them to this video.

Hi friend, I also have severe eczema! I've been making homemade tallow butter and it has done WONDERS for my skin. It can be a bit greasy so you don't need much of it. And of course not everybody with eczema responds the same to every product. Also, (and sorry ik I'm giving completely unsolicited advice but I'm going to do it anyways bc I know the struggle. I'm 23 and had it since I was 3 months old. I have tried it all) Look into the GAPS diet! Get the book and get ready to learn some shocking things about how much our guts affect our bodies (and can cause eczema among other things) and our brains. I cannot recommend this enough. It will change your life and could potentially get rid of her eczema altogether. God bless Praying for you and your little one.

Thanks so much! Your videos are helping me so much. Started my own business at home making cosmetics and I've had to learn the hard way that you cannot rely on these recipes. Pinterest is still my go-to for design and color/package and presentation ideas. I have so much saved for inspiration on there. Your videos are saving me so much hassle. I'm wondering if you have any recommendations for formulating shampoos? Before starting a cosmetic product business one should first learn how to formulate professionally, not from Pinterest or God knows where. Otherwise you risk being sued for the smallest allergic reaction your products cause. A business involves getting your product tested by authorised labs, registration, keeping documents for each ingredient, product, batch, etc. It's time-consuming, hard work.

Her hardcopy books are amazing, aswell as her ebooks and her blog, and she talks about antioxidants, preservatives, surfactants, etc in great detail. Im enjoying your beginner series.

Hi Tara!! I’m a new subscriber and follower and have a question for you. I am learning to formulate a hair growth oil and just ran across this video. I noticed that one of my intended ingredients, horsetail liquid extract, contains equisetum arvense (horsetail extract), glycerin and purified water. Would I need to use a preservative if I put this in my hair oil?

It is water based, so you do need a preservative. Also, I think you’re going to need an emulsifier as it’s not going to mix with the oils.

You can’t. It has to have a high pH to be a soap. If you try to lower it with citric acid (or something else), it’s going to break, meaning, it will “revert” to oils and fats. A disgusting blob that does the opposite of cleaning!

I’ve been looking into the ingredient lists of “natural” brands such as Herbivore from Sephora, and Radish Root Ferment Filtrate is the preservative I’ve seen them use. I wonder if that’s an effective preservative or if it’s like thinking grapefruit extract is a preservative?
@TaraLeee
@TaraLeee 4 жыл бұрын
Technically radish root ferment is a preservative. You can purchase it under the name leucidal liquid. Here is a link - lotioncrafter.com/products/leucidal-liquid?_pos=1&_sid=60c5b57e0&_ss=r But I have heard some mixed reviews on this stuff. For example I read an article about a brand who used it as their preservative, but was being sued because their products were found to be contaminated. (honestly I probably butchered that story. It's been so long since I read the article, so I don't really remember the details) Basically what I am trying to say is Yes, radish root ferment is a preservative, but not a very strong one. I think it could work, but as someone who makes their products at home, rather than in a lab I choose to use a stronger preservative. Since I'm not able to have my products professionally lab tested for proper preservation I would rather use something stronger, just to be on the safe side. Also when you are using lots of natural oils and extracts, products become harder to preserve, so it's just better to be on the safe side. :)

I have a question. How do we know exactly how to formulate and know exactly what to add to other ingredients? I am watching your other videos, but I am having trouble with how to make a large batch to sell. Like maybe a 40 oz. Batch of, let's say. Body butter. How do I know exactly what to mix of each item? And how do I know what to add for a butter? I try to research formulas for body butters.and can not find a formula with percentages that is accurate or easy to understand . You are the best teacher I've found. You helped me so much understand what I do already. I guess I am asking how do I know what to mix and how much to mix.

I totally get what you are saying here but the pinterest recipes are made from natural ingredients which I think grab more people. Whenever I see people using chemicals it kinda sends off a red flag in my head that it's not natural. I try to make natural products because I think thats what a lot of people like and look for. For example, what stops someone from going to target or walmart and buying body wash vs homemade stuff. They both have chemicals listed in the ingredients. I don't want this to sound harsh and I'm really interested in making cosmetics but I want them to be more on the natural side vs chemicals. Are the chemicals you use harsh or toxic?

Vegetable glycerin would be okay to use in oil products without a preservative right because it’s made out of oil?

Glycerine actually does NOT need to be preserved. It is self-preserving, that’s why it’s used to make glycerites. If it’s used in a formula that has high water content, however, then a preservative is needed.

Tara you have to study more because you are wrong. Glycerin is a natural compound derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. It actually is the best humectant because it helps pull water into the outer layer of your skin ( probably why you think it is water based) but that’s only to help the body trap moisture in your skin. It is still an oil. Please correct and anyone can google and see I’m correct

Doesn't mean you can't use them ( recipes). Simply means they need to study more. They just need a emulsifing wax,a broad spectrum preservative and a way to check pH depending on what's it's for. The world didn't start with percentages. Next not everyone like the same skin products. Especially African Americans who may prefer a oily lotion or those living in dry places. Some of us are also a bit more conscious about things that cause cancer and throws off hormonal imbalance and cause pcos and endometriosis and etc and you actually use quite a few of those things that cause issues in the body. It's all about education. Not all DIY'S are bad but a lot are just like a lot of so called pros are.

As long as your body butters don’t contain any water ingredients, you don’t technically need a preservative, but I would give them a 6 month shelf life. Body scrubs needs a preservative since most will come in contact with water since it’s kept in the shower. The last thing you want is mold in your products. Water is the ingredient that caused mold.
@TaraLeee
@TaraLeee 4 жыл бұрын
@@redmeg36 said it perfectly. Asia P, I plan on coming out with a series of videos with recipes that don't need a preservative. But I'll be honest, I think you can still call it a natural skincare line even if you include preservatives and emulsifiers. There aren't many "natural" preservatives out there, but there are a lot of "natural" emulsifiers.
@itsasia_

@@TaraLeee Okay thats good. I was thinking the same thing. That I can still brand it as natural just not all natural. I knew about the water causing mold and having to consider the shelf life. My thing is cant ppl scoop their scrub into a cup rather than take the whole container in the shower. I had an idea for that. I also thought about the greasiness of the products and how that can cause someone to slip and hurt themselves. So I had to rethink it all.
@theglamourplanner
@theglamourplanner Жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying but I believe this only applies to your target market you make your products for. While this may be greasy for you, women of color require a completely different formulation to care and create great skincare formulas that work for us, hence many coming up with our own recipes. I believe this needs to be clarified. We have tried products made by individuals like you and things like alcohol and other ingredients I found in your products on etsy are not safe for women of color to use as they do not align with our biological and melanin makeup

i’m not here to speak on or over anybody of color and what they feel is best for their skin. so i’m sorry if that’s the way you took the video. what im trying to express in this video is the dangers of not properly formulating or preserving your product which can damage you skin. if you add water to a product, which many of these DIYs that i’m referring to do, then you need a preservative. also you need to properly adjust ph and make sure you are using the ingredients in proper formulas. you can keep making any recipe you want, that’s the freedom of having your own choices in life. im not here to stop you from doing what you want. also, i don’t use alcohol in my products. what you are looking at is cetyl alcohol. this is not an alcohol you are thinking and is completely safe for people of color. cetyl alcohol is extremely moisturizing and is accepted in organic products. a quick google search will confirm this. i promise the more you learn about the science of skincare you will realize a lot of it is nothing to fear. and once you understand it you can avoid the ingredients that you do have evidence of actually causing harm instead of assuming something like cetyl alcohol is a drying alcohol when it’s not. the knowledge will set you free of the fear.

Hi Tara, thanks for your reply. I am a fan of your channel hence why I commented. I do understand what you were trying to convey but again it did come off as condescending and perhaps you are passionate about what you were saying but that’s the difference. With a black woman we are labeled as angry but the manner in which you we’re delivering your opinion many pardoned it as passion yet it was very condemning and condescending, Secondly, I watched the other video and you did say you were “using vitamin E as a preservative “ but yet you condemned using it in this video. Third, I am doing my research and homework, this is not my first go round making skincare products, therefore I know what cetyl alcohol is and yes it does have side effects that may not affect your skin type but affects others. Perhaps you should google it as it does cause the following…irritation, stinging, burning, redness and sometimes inflammation depending on if it’s animal derived vs a plant derivative and even if it’s plant based it can contain gmo’s like soy or corn oil. So like you stated about the debate over grape seed oil the same can be said if cetyl alcohol which isn’t pure because it is a combination of many things

I've checked her channel out and I found that I am correct. She has a video saying cetyl alcohol is not a bad alcohol - kzbin.info/www/bejne/kF6ripiZrcdqrdE Vitamin E is not a preservative. It is an antioxidant that keeps oils fresh. If it was an anhydrous recipe where I added in vitamin E then it is being used as an antioxidant to keep everything fresh. If I did say "preservative" in the video, I apologize, it was obviously a mistake. Why in the world would I make a video saying something isn't a preservative then claim it as a preservative later? If you think I do not know what I'm talking about you don't have to watch my videos.
