Evan, don't forget about Iloilo City. In less than 10 years, Iloilo City has vaulted onto the current high-quality Medical Hospital scene, as well as the city itself going through major changes to the city's social & infrastructure! Overall, cost of living affordability is similar to Davao, and there seem to be more Greenspaces throughout the city compared to Manila, Angeles and Cebu Cities.

Aside from Manila (Makati, Alabang, QC, BGC), and Cebu, there are other major cities also like Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Bacolod. Their medical facilities are also good - of course not at par with the West. I wont say state of the start but the skills and know-how of the doctors are very good. I am now based in NYC and have received treatment and underwent 2 surgeries the past 8 years. I expect to have 2 more. The difference - facilities and availability of equipment and medical supplies. Doctor skill and know how? Asian doctors, specifically specialists (Filipino and other doctors around Southeast Asia - based on my first hand experience), they can compete. They are very knowledgeable and have the same understanding as doctors in the West.

You are correct about real estate prices. Do you know that the major developers go to other parts of the world where Filipinos reside and market/ sell their condos to overseas Filipinos? Of course the prices should be lower than "Manhattan prices" but they are not far from outer borough New York prices. Ridiculous right?

@@lynbombales6741 It depends. If you're paying 100% cash, the deductibles might be cheaper in the US. Many expats return home because they don't have the coverage here. PhilHealth is not enough. I've lived in Cebu on and off for the last 10 years. I got robbed in Makati 12 years ago. Spent time in Bohol, Malapascua, Bantanyan, Leyte and Sumar. I plan on checking out Iloilo City as I hear good reports. I'm a 70 year old Canadian man who's married a much younger Filipina and we have 2 kids. Personally I prefer the provincial south. I hope to check out Anda in Bohol as well. I find other Expats annoying and prefer being with Filipinos. I don't drink or smoke and a lot of transplants do. Pollution is my number one beef about the Philippines. Paradise is wasted on the Filipino. I've been snorkeling twice only to come up and catch a disposable diaper on my face. Boracay went through a cleanup so why not the rest? I witnessed garbage raked up and buried in a white sand beach. The county needs a long term plan to maintain the beautiful environment for future generations.

I admire the people who chose to live in or visit the Philippines despite the issues and the persistent negative comments about various aspects of life in this country. I must say that the Philippines is not as bad as portrayed in western media compared to other countries all over the world according to reports published by reputable international institutions based on scientific surveys they conducted. Here's what the reports said: Issue: Personal Safety/Law & Order. - Allegedly, the Philippines is a very dangerous country. Based on the latest Global Law and Order Report by Gallup - a US consultancy firm based in Washington, Singapore was the safest country in the world with a Law & Order Index of 96. The Philippines was on the 30th spot as the safest country with a law & order index of 85. It is tied with France, Hongkong, Croatia and Slovakia. The US ranked 41st safest country along with Italy, Germany, Armenia and Lithuania, with a law & order index of 83. World ranking of the ten South East Asian countries: Singapore topped the list with law & order index of 96; Indonesia on 5th place as safest country (law&order index - 92); Vietnam, 29th (86); Philippines, 30th (85); Cambodia, 40th (84); Laos, 50th (82); Malaysia, 52nd (81); Thailand, 77th (76); Myanmar, 85th (83) Issue: Food Quality/Healthy Food - Allegedly, food in the Philippines is unhealthy, the worst in South East Asia if not in the world. The food we eat impacts on our health. The New York Posts, in an article dated January 24, 2023, reported that the world's fattest countries have been revealed in a new interactive map published by Our World in Data that uses data compiled from figures around the world and shows the large divide in obesity rates. The US was ranked the 15th fattest nation with a prevalence of obesity at 69.9% and Britain came in at 30th place 63.7% obesity rate,Australia at 64.5%, Canada at 64.1%, Spain at 61.6%, France at 59.5%, Italy at 57.5% In South East Asia, Malaysia is the most obese country with 42.5% prevalence of obesity of its population, followed by Thailand in second place at 32.6% obesity rate, Singapore at 31.8%, Indonesia at 28.2%. Philippines came in 5th place with 27.6% obesity rate, Myanmar at 24.8%, Cambodia at 21.7%, and Vietnam at 18.3% (least obese) Everyone talks how great and HEALTHY food in Thailand is. How come Thailand was ranked as the second most obese country in South East Asia behind Malaysia? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity levels in Thailand has been steadily increasing over the years. The spike in obesity level has been largely attributed to JUNKED FOOD. This goes to show that just because food in other South East Asian country are more savory and flavorful than Philippine food, they are healthy. They are not. Issue: Air Quality/Polluted air. Allegedly, the Philippines is a polluted country. As in food, the air we breathe impacts on our health. In 2018, the WHO said living in air polluted environment reduced a person's life span by two years. Air pollution is linked to health problems such as respiratory diseases, hearth diseases, asthma and skin and eye infections according to Disease Control Department. Thailand ranks second in exposure to air pollution among South East Asian countries, according to WHO's State Global Air Report. Thailand competes with Indonesia each year to take ti take the top spot for air pollution. According to the list of the World's Most Polluted Countries and Regions (Historica l Data 2018 - 2022) published by IQAir, a Swiss company that tracts air quality, Indonesia was the most polluted country in South East Asia (world ranking: no. 26 as most polluted country in the world), followed by Thailand (world rank: no. 57), Malaysia (world rank: no. 59), Philippines (world rank: no. 69), Singapore (world rank: no. 77). Note: The ranking is from MOST polluted to LEAST polluted. Who wants to return home from holiday with respirstory infection as a souvenir? I am curious to know your reaction/comment

10 years ago, the condo prices in Manila were fine; but now they are crazy expensive - I agree with you Evan, I don't know how they can keep selling them at such inflated prices - and the quality is often average, with the ongoing maintenance being poor - well that is my experience. But rentals are good value, so I would recommend renting and not buying in Manila.

A friend from the States joined me (pareho kaming ‘kano) for a longer bike trip, and on one of the best days we biked from the Manila Hotel down Roxas (the bay was awesome), all the way to Tagaytay. Good reasons Evans as you point out certain things I noted in the PI as a kid (50 years ago) that are still there today. First off, please do a Part 2 as there are many unprepared expats who head to the Philippines based upon those "retire on $500 in the PI" videos. While the times have changed and things have improved, Manila is the most densely populated metropolitan city in the world (more than 70,000 people per square kilometer). That many people per square kilometer generates a lot of waste and pollution. In addition, while many of us future expats look for viable infrastructure options (healthcare, services, quality of life, etc.) the income of the average Filipino does not afford them our future projected lifestyle. I recently had a discussion with friends on this issue, and we realize that expats must be careful not to take needed resources from the locals. We too must downsize our expectations while trying to enjoy all that the Philippines has to offer.

Healthcare isn’t bad in the Philippines…..if you have money and/or insurance. My girlfriend’s dad had a quadruple bypass and valve replacement at the Philippine Heart Center for $20k usd out of pocket. He didn’t have much for insurance. In California a 1500 sq ft condo can go for over $1 million usd. My girlfriend’s friend just bought a 3 bedroom condo in BGC for around $400k usd. You’d be hard pressed to find a 1 bedroom condo in some places in California for that. Infrastructure needs improvement in the Philippines, but it is improving. The businesses that cater to foreigners will make money. The speed of government offices are still slow, but it’s slow here too. Have you ever visited the California DMV? When I move there I will be retired. I’m not going there to work. Smog is bad almost everywhere where there are a lot of people. I’m going to be living in the province so it’s not an issue to me.

Filipinos and Spaniards. Although it was no threat of growing, the more recent conflict in Marawi in 2017 can also be added to the list. Wars and conflicts is a very real danger to also consider.

When u get older like me, you are mainly concerned about health and good healthcare. If u live outside the city in the province, goodluck on getting fast and good healthcare. I have had 3 friends who had medical problems living in the province, they sent me pics of the hospital they were in, it was horrible. Two of them left the philippines, the other is now in big city.

Keep speaking the truth. You neither over exaggerate or sugarcoat an issue. You are right about most expat bloggers, especially the Dumaguete crowd, not always giving a clear view of what some issues in the Philippines. It is still a wonderful country with mostly kind and friendly people and I’m here until I check out of this side of eternity 😊

Please describe what steps prospective expatriates from the US should take to secure top flight health care. Assume that these expatriates can afford a reasonable priced healthcare plan.

Thank younfor stating these ressons. I made an assessment with the same conclusions speciallyon the realty like why should i buy property in the philippines when i can buy a 10 acres or a chateau in France. I told my wife about this and she does not agree surprisingly. Also the medical is not really universal. I even spoke to realtors there and i asked to justify the 100x property price instead she got butt hurt. Also the condos are like the size of prison cells for a price similar to condo in florida. It is not worth the hype.
@83nomad5 Жыл бұрын
I think you mistook the condo bathroom for a prison cell space. They do look similar in size. In general, Florida condos are more hype.

Ma'am you are on point, hopefully the gready real estate and big private companies living gated communities wake up on this.
@snowtyboy Жыл бұрын
Tge philippines is a poor country but there are so many rich people who can afford to buy those expensive real estate properties as investment . The pre selling condos at bgc are almost sold out that is why megaworld and ayala land are looking for places to develop at the arca south or the one in pasig. Medical city and asian hospital are also top first class hospitals.

But isn't ut true that it's cheaper for people over 65 to pay out of pocket than to handle the very high deductibles and premiums ??? Plus most insurance companies won't accept people coming in above 65 or 70?

you are totally right. Condos in BGC & Makati & other parts of MNL are overly priced. It is more expensive there than in San Francisco, CA. where I live. Imagine that San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the U.S.

So a good condo maybe $800 a month . SF must cheaper than that correct ?
@alroberts193 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelbyrne5469 , depends where you live. I am talking about buying a condo in Ph vs. San Francisco Bay Area not renting a condo or apartment. Renting an apartment here is very expensive. Buying a 1 br/1ba condo depending on the sq.meters, you can buy for at least $500K - $600. Remember, you still have the HOA to pay monthly. This can go starting at $500 to $1,000 / month. Our condo square footage in the Bay Area is much larger than what I saw in BGC or Makati for average condos.
@DeanMonio Жыл бұрын
i rather have a house and lot than a condo...condo might be yours, but not the building...which will be demolished after lets say 50 years. real estate is extremly overpriced now, but the bubble will burst sooner than later. and rent in bgc is priced as high as in central europe...crazy.

@@sfrealestatedealmaker6001 well, u can get property in a not flood prone area too. I dont trust (filipino) high rise buildings in a earthquake prone region. convenience or close proximity to work is the only pro for me. demolish, usually thats what real estate companies do with old buildings. to make place for a bigger and newer project.

You're missing the point on healthcare. In Canada, it might be free, but you'll risk dying on a waiting list. Basic healthcare is just fine in the Philippines, and Thailand has great private hospitals not far away.
