Erikson's prose, characterization, and world is phenomenal. As far as I can tell, the emotional response and call to compassion this series generates is unparalleled. I was very moved by the stories you shared. This is truly a life-changing series. The compassion quote from Memories of Ice is one of my favorites, and I loved the one you shared from Bonehunters. I can't even recall how many times I have re-read the series and it's just never tedious; instead I keep finding new nuggets. I think what makes it powerful to me is the emotional and humorous sides, it makes you think and reflect without feeling overly preachy about certain themes, and I think it is more effective because it is not something you expect. When I first read these books, I didn't even know that grimdark and such was a thing, and honestly it never occured to me as the focus either. There are dark themes but they are more a vehicle to encompass the beautiful things that shine through. It is simply one of the high points of fantasy as a whole. I also want to add that it is so nice to see that more are discovering the books. I discovered them around when House of Chains had just been released, and some time later places such as Malazan empire forums and stuff, but it was hard to find places to discuss the series beyond that. So it's wonderful that you & others that are voices on these internet plains are bringing it to light, letting yet more people find it and give it a chance. :)

Thanks Brittany! You've convinced me to start my 4th (or 5th?) re-read. ;D I have the entire physical book collection, but I also own it in audiobook format. My 3rd time was accompanied by the audio and I really enjoyed slowing my pace to match it. The narrator has some unique pronunciations but I admit to having a few myself. It's perfect for those late summer nights by the campfire. I'm so happy many others are enjoying the Malazan universe and speaking out about it because it really is a masterpiece in fantasy and beyond in my opinion.

I'm halfway through Gardens of the Moon... and I love it so much already. I've heard so much about how confusing and dense it is- and yes, it's a lot and I don't understand the full picture entirely. But it's so good, and it's not like you can't follow the main story at all. If this is the 'rough' and 'weak' start that I'm meant to 'push through'... oh man am I hyped for the rest of the series.

🦖 Getting ready to re-read the series shortly. I read it about 2 years ago now and your video has sparked my interest in it again. I do recall while reading the first time how I would constantly think about the characters, the world, the story, and where I thought things were going, and that kept me engaged and reading until I finished, and then thought about the characters, the world, the story, and where I thought things would have gone. I only wish it hadn't ended, though it's such a great read and epic emotional journey. 🦖

🦕🦖 MBotF takes the idea of an unreliable narrator and plays it to the hilt. It was an incredibly refreshing take because you don't get a god view of wrong and right, you get everyone's different experiences, which hopefully gives everyone a better understanding of how history itself is actually written; it is all a collection of unreliable narrators. Grimdark in the levels of tragedy and darkness it can hit, but only as a reminder of what people are actually capable of. It just doesn't sugar coat humanity. Doesn't stay Grimdark because that isn't what humanity is either. Plays the full range, just shows us what hides in the shadows we normally like to forget about. There is still some very dark stuff to go through, hope you get through it well and enjoy the rest of the trip.

I tried reading gardens of the moon when I was 11, way too young to get it. I have just started rereading it, hope I will get it this time. Back then I didn’t have wikias to understand charachters/races/factions. I remember loving the T’lan Imass as a faction (felt way over powered tho)

Ah idk what I would do without all the fandom wikis!

I finished the series a few months ago and couldn't agree more, thinking about re-reading it because nothing else seems to compare. Although First Law has been really good and I might try out Stormlight Archives.

First Law is so good too! Have you tried the Dune series?
@mckenzie10863 жыл бұрын
No I haven't, not yet. I've heard good things about it though, hmmm... How similar is it to Malazan, I think Erikson said it was a big influence for him right?
@BookswithBrittany3 жыл бұрын
I would say the main similarities are the writing style and philosophical themes! I can’t find them anywhere like in these two series

Great to here your opinions and quoted you picked are great. I mean, if this want convince people, hardly anything will. Sometimes you just need to break that thin layer of fear of unknown and read those novels. EDIT: Removed some stupid question, because it was stupid. You are great and have a good day.

@@BookswithBrittany I will edit my comment, because that was stupidity on my part. I didn't mean to sound rude, just compared your earlier videos with different light to this one. Don't worry, post more, I would love to listen and watch more of your commentary.

I appreciate you editing it ☺️ my only guess is that it’s my setting spray because the light and camera didn’t change at all 🤷🏼♀️

Just starting 'The Crippled God'... Yes, the ride is wild, the hours invested legion, and it's all worth it. As you say - the man is a genius, and the fantasy genre has taken a quantum leap. [dinosaur emoji here]

I have watched a lot of YT video's that give Malazan high praises. But I also hear a lot that you should first have X amount of books/series under your belt before you should start. The longest series I read was the complete Witcher series and I read that from start to finish. I have The First Law trilogy waiting for me when I finish my current read (IT). For some reason the thought of starting Malazan doesn't leave my mind. But I don't know if I'm willing to first read something like WoT as a means of preparing for Malazan. Do you think I could start with atleast the first book no problem? Or do you reccommend that I really read something like WoT or simply more series in general first before I start Malazan?

I don’t think there’s a magic answer, but I personally think it sounds like you’d be ok going into gardens of the moon. I don’t read them back to back because it’s too dense for me. If you’re willing to maybe just slow your normal reading pace for MBotF I think you’ll be just fine 😊
