Weltgeist, you've mentioned Schopenhauer's biographers a number of times and I was wondering: do you have any recommendations for biographies to read about Schopenhauer?

I'm interested in finding a good biography of Schopenhauer too. Have you zeroed in on anything? Also, I'm curious to know why you want to read about Schopenhauer, if you don't mind sharing. In my case, I was troubled by the same questions in my youth that schopenhauer has tried to address. But I came across Schopenhauer only after I'd found answers to most of my questions. I used to write down my thoughts in a diary and one of the things I've written down is about the "Will to live" while pondering over the purpose of living, because I felt that "Life just wants to live" with a will that's externally imposed (not autonomous) and is unmindful of whether life is worth living.

@@wecas9596 I haven't really zeroed in on anything because I'd like Weltgeist to reply, as I assume he's read at least one Schopenhauer biography in his lifetime. I'll probably settle on one myself if he doesn't reply, though. As for reading Schopenhauer, I'd really like to see things from a different point of view and to get an intimate view into different perspectives. I don't believe in metaphysics myself, and yet there are plenty of hyper-intelligent people who did and still do, and I'd like to understand why they did. I always want to get into philosophy in general, and I know that Schopenhauer is comparatively easy to read when compared to people such as Kant and Nietzsche.

@@tristanfoss7469 I would say Nietzsche is easy to read though at times hard to understand, whereas Kant can be hard to understand precisely because he is hard/tedious to read.

Brilliant! As concerns the ancients of the West, we can receive no greater wisdom than from Plato, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca. Thankfully, we now have the German tradition (from Leibniz to Heidegger), which could almost be said to serve as our own equivalent to the Greco-Roman era.

Schopenhauer a great philosopher yet very weak. I thank him for being a giant in who’s shoulders I stood upon and still do. I can only work and learn so that I one day surpass him.
