YES this series deserves so much more love!! I just finished book 2 and I can't believe he left us on a LITERAL cliffhanger lol. I think I might have enjoyed book 1 actually a bit over book 2, but only because I found it hard to find my footing for the first 30% of book 2 and I actually preferred the slow-burn start of book 1. But the world building reveals and character development in book 2 is exceptional!! Very curious to see what I'll think of the finale, Barker doesn't pull any punches so I am ready for a wild ride!

"Call of the Bone Ships" is my book of the year, I just loved it. I'm currently reading "The Bone Ships Wake", hopefully the ending will not disappoint me.

Great video ! I'm absolutly sold on reading this trilogy, but as English is not my first language, I fear I might get lost with Barker's prose... It's probably best that I wait for a translation :/

Thank you Johan for speaking of this trilogy. I think the problem with it is that most people found the first book boring, the second is more action packed, but ironically I liked it less than the first one. It was so descriptive of the worlbuilding so fascinating and so different to every other fantasy book that I had read before that... you see I borrowed it from a friend who lives in London, but the both of us are from a small town in northern Spain so imagine my frustration when he lent me the first book one Christmas and I had to wait until Easter to message him and tell him to bring me the other two. Also I liked the third book better than the second, but my fave is still the first one and for the same reasons that other people find it boring. And I don't even like pirates!

I've made the decision to start to read more fantasy book by listening to tgem. My eyes are getting bad so trying to read printed word books is getting harder. It's going to get interesting doing it this way. I'm enjoying what I've been listening to has been good.

Ill add it to the list. Worldbuilding looks like a more serious One Piece. A race to find something in a seafaring world thats split in half by a thin strip of land. Sounds familar(in a good way as taking inspiration from Oda is a plus for me), but all the other aspects are def more unique and tonally differentiating.

@@adoniscreed4031 agreed! Weirder ideas have spontaneously happened in 2 different parts of the world at similar times. Or... It could also be possible he's unintentionally taking inspiration. In a music composition course I took, this guy completely recreated the Chariots of Fire theme, thinking it was completely original. When really... he probably stored the Melody in his subconscious somewhere, reformed it from scratch, and was greatly disappointed when we showed him what he copied 😂 The guy said he'd never seen the movie, but given how much that theme song permeates pop culture... it probably got planted into his subconscious. Given OP is the 2nd best selling comic/manga in the world... maybe that happened here? Or maybe the author is fan of OP. Or never had any interaction with it lol

Agreed with everything you said on the Bone Ship's Wake. Not gonna lie, the ending left me confused, I had to re-read it because I was completely lost. Still loved the book but the ending was a bit meh.

I couldn’t stand the Bone Ships. I didn’t like the characters at all. Made it 80% and quit. I’m usually easy to please with books, but I actively disliked this book. Not a single aspect of this story pleased me. To each their own, but wow was this a disappointment for me. I thought I was going to like it. 😔
