I don't get why anyone would want to spend NYE in Times Square. Standing there in the cold for hours, limited food and restrooms, overcrowding, you couldn't pay me to do that. My advice watch it on television you can see everything better.

I went to our version of the Time Square New Year's Eve ball drop (held in Nathan Phillip Square, where our City Hall is, in Toronto) as a kid in the late '80's, and I got my foot _almost_ cut open by a glass bottle; that was the last time I _ever_ went to one of these big gatherings (nowadays, I'll go to a club or just celebrate NYE at home.)

A unfortunately thing happened to my friend who decided to go to new years eve in Time Square in 2020. She was s*xu*lly assaulted while standing crammed crowd. She couldn't move much to get away from this creep. When she asked some people in the crowd if she can stand over another spot they ignored her. She and her friend decided to leave before the ball dropped and it took her a while to leave the crowd. The Security there gave her grief for leaving. She explained what happened and security said to go to a police booth for a report. She made a report but nothing was done. No one went into the crowd to fined this pervert. Horrible.

I kind of tried doing this last year. Me and my family stayed at a hotel on New Years Eve to watch the countdown from there. And while we weren’t in the crowd, getting to the hotel was easier said than done.

I've been to Times Square just once in July of 1971 - 52 years ago. That was also the most recent time I was in New York. The sidewalks as I recall were narrower then than they appear to be now. I had taken a tour bus trip to see a Broadway musical ("No, No Nanette with Ruby Keeler). The bus dropped us off on the corner of 46th Street, and I remember thinking that it was so crowded I might be able to take both feet off the ground and not fall down. Worse yet, when I got to the theatre, I was supposed to pick up my tickets at the box office. They had the envelope with my name on it, but it was empty! She must have read the expression on my face because she quickly said not to worry as they always kept a few seats for emergencies and asked if I minded sitting in the front row - no extra charge. So that worked out well!

Did it back in 2018/19. Was a bucket list item that did not live up to expectations. We were street level, went in at 6 PM. No drinks, no bathrooms, 8 blocks away when we showed up six hours early. They had video screens with NO AUDIO. It was pointless. It poured rain the entire time, we were cold and miserable, even dressed for the weather. Friends called at 11:30 (they chose to stay at the hotel) , warm in their bed with drinks and the Square on tv. I envied them. Overrated AF.

Can't say I disagree but I do have fond memories of the one time I did do NYE in times square. Only because my friend's brother was working security, so we were able to get a good spot 30 minutes before the ball dropped and at midnight a beautiful stranger I was standing next to decided I would be the guy she kissed. But yeah I'd never go again.

No self-respecting New Yorker goes to Times Square on New Year’s Eve. I don’t really “get” all the hype about New Year’s Eve anyway. When I was still working, I always opted to work New Year’s Eve (I worked night shifts). I made time and a half and I felt useful. I’ve always hated crowds anyway. Being forced into a “pen” like cattle is not my idea of a good time. Thanks for all the caveats, AK. I hope some people heed what you say.

I would recommend just going to 56th 57th street and 7th avenue close to midnight say 11:15…yes you’re far away but you can be having a dinner or get together beforehand, anyway you get enough of the experience and then at midnight they shoot the fireworks at Central Park which you can also easily view..later it’s no problem heading back to the party..I lived on 55th street for many years and did this…I have found that everything that’s popular for many years tends to be over rated in any city I’ve been to…however doesn’t mean you should skip it..read up in the history..do it once have a good time…Happy New Year!

Most there to watch the ball fall in celebration of 2024 have no clue that 2024 could likely be one of the most turbulent years they have ever experienced. They should have partied in 1998 like it was 1999, because as soon as the century turned it's been one major problem after another. We are living in tumultuous times.

I went to see the ball drop just three times lifetime, back in the early 90's and the the security wasn't as strict as it is now, until the last time I went and I think that's when you could only navigate through certain streets. I remember the streets that year was covered in snow that year.

Me and a buddy drove from the South to spend the 1998 New Year's Eve in Time Square and that was enough for me. Don't get me wrong, I am glad that I at least experienced it. But one time was enough for me. I have never been in a crowd so packed. It was worse than sardines. I don't know how the crowds are nowadays...from TV it doesn't seem like it used to be, although still too crowded for me though. Thank goodness a stampede has never broken out because it would be horrendous. Me and my buddy stayed on the outer perimeter parts of the crowd in case we got sick of being packed and wanted to try to get out (which was difficult). I don't see how people farther into the crowd survived. I thought about what if I were deep into the crowd and needed to use the toilet. I would have been doomed.

I was staying in a hotel in Manhattan and didn’t realize that it was located in a blocked-off zone due to the crowd awaiting the ball to drop. I arrive on the block of my hotel and I was stopped at the barricade and was asked for proof that I was staying at the hotel and was not attempting to circumvent the barricades as people had purchased tickets. When I couldn’t find my plastic key to my room the cop called me a liar which he said was obvious. WhenI finally found it I showed it to the idiot cop’s partner, a man who doesn’t judge and abuse a visitor to the city awaiting for an overseas flight. Of course, the dummy cop wouldn’t even apologize for judging me guilty. That’s why I’m stopping in a different city on the East Coast on my next trip overseas. It’s a great way to not have to be on a plane for 6 vs. 12 hours as I originate the trip in Phoenix.

Frank M>>>Jersey City>>Everyone>>>take notice....Also living near NYC.....Times Square is not a pleasant place to be for New Years' Eve, especially, with kids / infants. It is true, it is considered to be a "tourist trap". Everything is costly. Getting there is one thing, everyone leaving at the same time at midnight is crazy, will take you hours to get home. You have to get there early, put up with big crowds pushing and shoving, pickpocketing, no bathroom, nearby stores closed, no chairs, umbrellas, backpacks, coolers and alcohol. This year with the expected rallies and protest groups. Police will be out in full force with wooden barriers, check points and barricading admitting into areas after intensive search. Thank you AK! With all that being said, stay safe and Happy New Year!

Take the elevator 🛗 up, where smack dab. You ll see one of New York Cities, precious Treasures. Cabrini, Fort Tryon park. Its practically safe, beautiful, with breathtaking 😍 views of New Jersey and the mighty Hudson River, that park will put perspective to your year, and set u off for 24. Aig . ✌️ ☮️ 🕊 2024.

Sometimes you may end up in a horrible spot with no view, or maybe you could end up having to pee but you have to hold it in for so many hours. Also, it's 2024, of course there will be some type of drama or arguments, but i'm happy that NYPD is stepping up security for that. Wow… To charge $450 for something and then justify it by saying “but we’ll give you a complimentary champagne toast”….. That’s just wrong on so many levels. 😤

No thanks, a few years ago I visited NY the weekend before Christmas and it was wall to wall people walking up Broadway towards Times Square, I felt like I was being herded. But yea it looks like you're trapped in one spot for hours if you stand out in Times Square or close to it on New Year's Eve. However in normal circumstances I love Times Square and the Theater District along with many other parts of NYC.
