I alternate glycolic acid lotion and adapalene on my upper arms for KP, and it works great. I also use an AHA or PHA product on my face and neck about twice per week (on an off-night from retinoids) to prevent ingrown hairs from shaving. They really do have some unique benefits!

My 72yo mom started using a glycolic acid serum from Loreal and she's noticed her skin is much smoother. Thank you for breaking it down!! I've used the Paula's Choice 8% AHA gel exfoliant and liked it but after this video I want to try the cerave!! I've watched you for a couple of years and my skin has definitely improved! AHAs have been my skin saviour since starting Differin to combat acne (which is prescription through a derm in Australia and is $80 AUD here 😪😭), I use the Pyunkang Yul Peeling Gel every 1-2 weeks and it is AMAZING, the weeks I don’t use it I use a gentler AHA toner, like the Krave Kale-lalu-yAHA. Without AHAs the dry, flaky skin from using adapalene is almost unmanageable no matter how much moisture I incorporate in my routine. But because my skin is sensitive and dry the most I can tolerate any AHA is twice a week. Hope this helps anyone reading the comments 😅

Glycolic acid is my favorite active. It produces faster results than retinoids. I always look for products that give me an acid tingle. I love the Alpha Skin Care serum, although I have graduated to Organys 20% glycolic acid serum (more of a toner, though) several times a week. I may try retinol again, but I have had products before that either disappointed me or made me raw (Differin). Right now I am using ascorbic and glycolic acids in my skincare to excellent results, but I think I can get away with trying retinol again. I'll just use vitamin c in the morning, and retinol or glycolic acid at night. Thanks to all that free time I had from the covid lock down, and Dr. Dray, I now consider myself an armchair dermatologist.

What glycolic acid percentage did you start with?
@megaliberty
@megaliberty 2 жыл бұрын
@@flowlikewater6576 I started with the Alpha Skin Care Serum at 14% glycolic acid. I used it every day without any issues. If a formula is too strong for you, try using it every other day, or twice a week, or even once a week. Your skin may peel if you don't exfoliate often.

Can you make a video on all the little “critters” that grow (sometimes thrive!🙃) on the skin? For example, I get confused between malesezia yeast, demodex mites, staph aurelias, etc. how can we figure out if we’re overburdened with this, ask our derm to test for it, and how it shows up as overgrowth on the skin? Can you have overgrowth of all? What’s the best one to target first?

Amlactin is awesome. I hated the smell at first too, but then I read the bottle (🤦‍♀️🤣) and it says it must be shaken up before use. Now I shake it up well and the smell is greatly reduced. I use it on my neck and body. Love it. Also sometimes I will spot treat with a teensy amount on a qtip dabbed directly on my milia as needed. Helps the milia exfoliate away quicker. I like using the Alpha Enhanced Renewal Cream 12% Glycolic Acid. On alternate nights, I also use Tretinoin for a few nights, then the L’Oreal Vitamin C on another night or two. Between these three, my skin always looks very even and clear. Occasionally, I will just use a nighttime moisturizer before bed. In the morning, I just use a daytime moisturizer plus sunscreen then makeup. None of these products has caused any irritation to the face, but I did begin using them slowly at first.

I am checking my products to see whether I already have anything in my (over-stocked bathroom cupboards) containing glycolic, mandelic or lactic acid, before I buy anything else for my face. Dr Dray said that she doesn't use AHAs on her face (apart from when she tries out products), so maybe I won't make it a priority. Although Dr Dray is still very young in comparison! I may see whether my regular pharmacy has any AHA samples first. Love to you and your family. 👱‍♀️❤

Helloooo I'm so glad you shot this video, thank you! I've been wondering if I can use it with tretinoin. I've been using it on different nights 1st night Mandelic Acid (with a mix of salicylic acid) 2nd night tretinoin 3rd night just rest (originally i had no AHA/BHA, and I would use tretinoin every other night, so I can use up whatever products from before.. trying to simplify my routine) mornings vitaminc c -> sunscreen have used up all my eye cream which I am happy, and I haven't found the need to use it really. I just wonder if AHA/BHA is necessary if ultimately I will build up to use tretinoin every night..? I definitely bought it on a whim cuz I was breaking out horribly and tretinoin wasn't working... but then my stress pimple/acne cleared up before I even started using it =.= bad decision on my part.. Thank you so much for your videos, I've learned so much!

I used to use the "SR Skincare" (AHA) Glycocilic, Lactic Acid and Mandelic Acid (3 separate products). I can't remember what %s. I still use their (BHA) high strength Salicylic Acid when I want to speed up exfoliation and occasionally on my feet. I don't think I have any AHA face products at the moment, surprisingly?! So I may start using the Glycolic and/or Mandelic Acid again. I am lucky that my skin is very tolerant, so probably won't bother about the Lactic Acid. The UK brand "SR Skincare" used to be called "Forever Young", but changed it's name to "SR Skincare" (probably because of other brands/salons with the same name). I purchase it online, they ship to Australia. 👱‍♀️❤

The Eucerin rough and bumpy lotion has been a holy grail on my body, and it's been helpful with my grandma's foot calluses. I use an AHA serum 2x a week, but I tend to like exfoliating serums that have both AHA and BHA in it to get the best of both. I like the Good Molecules serum, but I have experienced over-exfoliation with it when I used it more than 2x a week. Right now I'm alternating between Hyram's mandelic serum and the Peach and Lily power cocktail serum, and they've been really nice and gentle yet effective.

I use the neutrogena stubborn blackheads in the morning. It’s got glycolic, polyhydroxy, mandelic and salicylic acids in it, so it’s an aha/bha all in one type thing. Gotta build a tolerance to it, fyi.

I know this is a bit off topic from the video, but I’ve seen beauty bloggers starting to talk about using tallow-based products in skincare. Could you do a video/find research to support tallow use? I took a look through a couple of different journals via my university but couldn’t find anything substantive. I thought you might know more where to look/have access to different journals. Thanks!!

I have been using mandelic acid as I remember you saying that hyperpigmentation could be induced. I always wondered if I switch to glycolic acid when I finish, if my skin would be okay. I also try to not use an AHA when applying retinol on my face some evenings. I started using Neostrata's new formula of Vit C with a PHA and my skin so far is liking it, I think it was some low levels of AHA's in it as well. I think mostly having a clean diet, exercise and water always helps too on the side for collagen and firming of the skin. :)

Thanks for this video Dr. Dray ☺️ On this topic, what do you think will give better results overall: use a weak AHA formula daily or a stronger formula weekly? Also, which AHA has better outcome on what regards collagen production: glycolic or lactic? Many thanks! 🙂
@megaliberty
@megaliberty 2 жыл бұрын
Glycolic acid has a smaller molecule size than lactic acid, meaning it will go deeper in the skin and will be more likely to enhance collagen production. Just make sure that your glycolic acid product is acidic enough to drive the product deep into your skin. I always look for a product that has a noticeable acid tingle. A good strong product that I use is Organys 20% peel serum, from Amazon. I use it several times a week as a leave on toner. If that is too stong for you the Alpha Skin Care serum that Dr. Dray recommends is a great alternative that I have tried.

These are really great questions, and I have had the same questions in mind. But from what I have researched, it appears that Glycolic Acid in concentrations at or above 10% help produce collagen....but it has to be 10% or higher.
