Llandudno is a coastal town in North Wales. It’s known for North Shore Beach and 19th-century Llandudno Pier, with shops and a games arcade. Northwest of town, the cliffs of Great Orme headland jut into the sea. Ancient tunnels lead to a cavern at Great Orme Mines. A 1902 tramway has an upper and lower section, and travels to the headland’s summit. To the east, smaller headland Little Orme is a nature reserve. In 2022 the Great Orme Tramway will celebrate its 120th anniversary, yet each year thousands of people still take immense pleasure in travelling to the summit of the Great Orme in an original early twentieth century tramcar. Others prefer to wind their way around the headland, admiring some of the most strikingly beautiful and dramatic scenery, which is visible only from the Marine Drive. This four mile shelf was cut out of the sheer limestone cliffs in 1878 and is designed for vehicles and walkers alike. Alternatively, it is possible to catch a bus in opposte the Pier and go on an informative and visually rewarding sight-seeing tour of the Orme.

The reason to visit Llandudno, is that it has a distinctive Victorian charm. Also 98% of the land the town is built on, is owned by Lord Mostyn, its been like this since the late 16C. Lord Mostyn lives permanently in London, but his land agents, Mostyn estates, rule llandudno with a rod of iron. Any hotel or B&B that looks a little shabby, is told in no certain terms to do something about it, that's why the resorts famous North Parade looks so magnificent. No ice cream or chip shop vendors or even amusements are allowed on its famous promenade, and the oldest Punch & Judy still operating in the Uk, the Codman family only recently gained permission for a permanent stand on the prom. Richard Codman first arrived in town in 1851, and the family have been entertaining the visitors ever since, but actually sighting the show on the prom itself, was only granted recently. llandudno is such a lovely resort, with an easy paced way of life, and its been my home town for 23yrs, and i love it.

I spent most family holidays in Llandudno and loved it .We used to take the open topped tram from the Little Orm to the town,so exciting .When I was 18 I worked as Assistant to the Manager, Mrs Carter of the Grand Hotel. I loved it ,a lot of the waiting and kitchen staff were from Italy. We all went to see the Welsh National Opera perform Nabucco in the town. Fantastic, lots of Bravos etc and we were invited to the last night party, lots of singing a d dancing .Wonderful memories.

It's nostalgia time again .... Way back in the 1960s, there used to be a ferry service from Liverpool to LLandudno; if you didn't want to stop here, you could stay on to Bangor, but most people would disembark at the LLandudno pier for a few hours; there would even be time to take the tram to the top of the Great Orme. This service enabled a relatively cheap day out during the school summer holidays when one parent, usually the mother, had to provide entertainment for her bored children. I don't know when the ferry service ceased to be in business but I can clearly recall being with my girlfriend (later my wife) on top of the Great Orme listening to Alan "Fluff" Freeman host Radio 1's Pick Of The Pops on my transistor radio. By the time we returned to Llandudno to catch the ferry, Alan concluded the show with The Rolling Stones' Jumping Jack Flash, so that dates it to the summer of 1968.

As a Gen Z kid, I've only ever known most of the UK's old seaside resorts as run-down shadows of what they used to be, but Llandudno seems to have avoided that decline. It is really nice that we have this preserved old resort town to enjoy even today, and I can vouch that the cable car is definitely worth a go.

Llandudno didn't go hell for leather to attract as many people as possible, I think, so it never became tacky and overdeveloped like Blackpool and Weston-super-Mare. Somehow it's kept its Victorian charm and the people are friendly and welcoming, which isn't always the case in larger resorts

I believe the reason Llandudno has retained its charm (unlike other seaside towns) is because a local law was past back in the 1800s preventing any kind of trading along the promenade other than hotels, not even an ice-cream can be sold on the prom, the arcades and fair rides etc are gathered on the pier. The nicest seaside town in the UK.

Great video, I'm from neighbouring Colwyn Bay and the council took a different approach with our beach in recent years, they turned it into a permanent beach by raising its level with sand pumped in from the seabed a little further out to sea, it's a much better solution to pebbles and has made the beach here really popular again like being back in the 70's when Colwyn Bay was a much more popular destination than it is now. This approach would look amazing on Llandudno's North Shore, my favourite local beach is Llandudno's West Shore though, amazing when the tide is all the way out (and it goes out a LONG way!)

The stone circle represents that the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru ( National Eisteddfod of Wales ) was held in Llandudno. Many local people speak Welsh. The Great Orme is called Pen Y Gogarth in Welsh and has Sant Tudno' s Church. The pier BTW used to have ships that went to the Isle of Man.

My first seaside holiday was in Ryll the second Llandudno. I was only 10 or 11.I loved going on the open-top of the tram. One year we got on a boat at the end of the pier which cruise d to Puffin Island and back ,I think it was called the St Tudno. If I rember right the boat also went from there to Douglas in the Isle of Man. Later I worked as a receptionist at the Craigside Hydro near the Little Orme ,it was already very dated. Then I worked at the Grand Hotel which I loved.Every afternoon an orchestra would play in the lounge. So sad to see it's decay. Once I went with the man that ran the boat trips when he went to Conway for a part for his boat, it was very, very rough going round the Great Orme, I was glad the coastguard was there as it was scary with tide running. Thank you for bringing back happy memories.

Many thanks for your excellent video. Absolutely love Llandudno. Has somehow managed to keep it's Edwardian elegance, probably due to the many rigorously enforced regulations regarding the seafront by the organisation that owns most of the place, Mostyn Estates. Only certain colours you can paint your hotel. No neon signs. No burger bars. No amusement arcades. No bingo halls. Etc etc and I for one, absolutely applaud them. Also the Victorian/ Edwardian Extravaganza that happens every early May Bank Holiday weekend is truly excellent, with the highlight for me, being the procession of vintage vehicles that takes up to three hours to pass by, going along the Marine Drive on the Sunday afternoon. I shall be there this Sunday and am already looking forward to it after a couple of years gap. Llandudno and Mostyn Estates, I salute you. Cheers.

The Council should be really proud of themselves. The way they have kept this place is amazing. It really is a nice place to go. They have lots of interesting activities going on throughout the holiday season too. If you're one of those tattoo covered fatties who likes to drink a lot (usually found at Rhyl) it's really not the place for you. Maybe the tourist board should take advice from the people who run this place and sort out the so called tourist attractions further up the coast.

Whilst I'm sure the council might indeed have had a part to play in how the town has managed to somehow keep it's Edwardian elegance, I'd argue it has more to do with most of the place being owned and managed by The Mostyn Estates which has very specific rules regarding such things as what limited colours you may paint your seafront hotel, no neon signs, no bingo halls, amusement arcades or burger bars on the prom etc etc and which are rigidly enforced. And I for one agree wholeheartedly with that being the case. Long may it be the way it is and then it can continue to attract the clientele that appreciates that ambiance.

West shore is the beach to go to. North shore, as you can see, is nothing but a thin strip of sand by the pier. West shore is a much bigger beach and longer too. It goes all the way to Deganwy and then the cycle path carries on to Conwy and beyond. It’s just a better beach lol. 😂 As someone who grew up, went to school and live here. This video opened my eyes, it’s so easy to just take this stuff for granted, we see it everyday, its just our background as we work and live. Yet it is beautiful, steeped in history and as you put it “world famous” lol. Nice video. Here’s a thing, when we where kids you’d get a metal bin lid, turn it upside down and put the handle in the tram tracks and ride it like a sledge. Man the speed was insane, how we didn’t kill ourselves I’ll never know.

I didn't know there were ever air hockey rankings in Britain. Bury was planning to hold a national championship and a UK Air Hockey Association was registered for it. And the World Crazy Golf Championships held some short Saturday afternoon side tournaments in Hastings, but that's about it, I thought.

There is a lot of prehistoric history on the Great Orme. Old mines etc. Which are fascinating. Lots of great fish and chip places, but have to watch out for the seagulls if you eat them on the front lol. Thanks Tim. I love your walks. It's like being there with you.

The last time I went there was 1961 on a friends works coach trip, we were both still teenagers. From the view of the bay it looks exactly the same as it did then. Unfortunately we went on a Sunday in the days of extreme Welsh Sunday Observant laws. More or less everything was closed. I still say it has one of the most picturesque bays in the whole of Wales even after 60 plus years since my visit.

It is certainly a nice place for a day trip. The "Grand" Hotel does need a date with the demolition experts though. The cable car is rarely open, it doesn't like wind and it tends to be windy. If it is running, it's a spectacular must do. Also check out the Ski Centre and toboggan on the Orme. Llandudno is near many other nice places. Hope you have Conwy, Beaumaris, Caernarfon, Llandwyn and some of the Anglesey towns in the pipeline.

Llandudno is an absolutely beautiful place to stay. It holds very special memories for me, and I love visiting here at least once a year. I've stayed in a few of the seafront hotels and every one of them is as beautiful inside as they are outside. I've also stayed in the Grand Hotel when it was owned by Butlins and had a great time in there. However, guess what? It's now owned by Britannia Hotels so I don't need to tell you what's happened to it since they took over, especially as it's a another listed building they own. The pier is amazing and a lovely walk on a sunny day. There used to be a tall slide which in the summer months, people would climb up the frame of it and dive in to the water below! Infront of the hotel there used to be The Pier Pavillion but that burnt down in 1996 and the site has been left derelict ever since. Some of the supports are still standing but it's just an empty space, and because it (along with The Grand Hotel) both have listed status with CADW it limits what can be done on the site. There have been many plans submitted but none have got approval so Conway Council periodically clean the site and send the bill to the landowner.

@@BereniceLydia Adam Williams owns Llandudno Pier but Alan Waldron owns the Pavillion site, and has submitted plans to build 50 apartments and a restaurant on it. How Conwy Council have approved these plans god only knows as it is a Listed site, so in theory the building should be re-instated. This sounds like a few brown envelopes have been passed around to get this application through. Also, 50 apartments means at least 50 cars need to be parked somewhere, and as there is nowhere to park around that area, this should be fun watching the arguments after it is built! Adam Williams has submitted a "call-in", basically an objection, because the original plans submitted in 2018 have been amended. Adam is threatening to close the pier because he says he will have to reduce the hours the pier will be open because the apartment residents will object to the noise. The £20million development is currently on hold whilst the objection is heard.

They are vicious things stealing food and harassing people, they need to be culled, you have to hide to eat anything !! Plus something needs to to done to the Britania Hotel at the side of the pier, it lets llandudno down, what a mess and an eyesore!!
