I saw that Cybershell video when it was new...somehow I just knew that he was right...as I already saw traces of older people on twitter getting nostalgic about playing old games on their CRTs and realized it was just a matter of time before younger people started doing it to. His entire point about it feeling more "real" really sticks as well! We're so used to seeing everything through a digital lens that looking at something through a more "real" lens helps it feel...well...more real! lol :P

@ZX3000GT1
@ZX3000GT1 4 ай бұрын
Color looks punchy precisely because it's less color accurate. Usually you can just increase the color saturation settings or changing the color range to bring out the colors in a modern TV, especially OLED which is absolutely capable to show punchy colors, but tuned by default to show more subdued and natural, realistic colors because they were designed to show more realistic looking TV content most of the time, not animations. My TV has a separate preset just for animation that by default raises the color saturation and changes the color range to sRGB to make animation colors pop better. Only issue is it also activates the motion smoothing/interpolation which thankfully can be turned off because it looks bad.
@ChroniclesofKToyoda
@ChroniclesofKToyoda 4 ай бұрын
Y'all realize OLEDs are notoriously poor at colour accuracy right.¿ The technology has punchy colors sure, but not accurate colours & if it's a WRGB OLED not only will it be inaccurate in dark scenes like all OLEDs but be washed out in bright scenes also The other issue with OLED is the constant voltage limiter on the panels which constantly shifts values throughout even more than they already do towards the ends of their range., but yes the Sony Trinitron technology is/was vibrant display tech, but all CRTs are still damaging to human vision

The best way to use an old CRT TV, regardless of its generation, is to embrace some seriously retro-tech wizardry. Get yourself a Chromecast, Plex media server, and HDMI to RCA adapters. If things get tricky, RCA to coax adapters can save the day. You can even hook up multiple HDMIs using an HDMI hub. That’s right-four levels of tech-tastic connections before it even hits your CRT! I did this less than five years ago with eight HDMI devices linked through a hub, RCA to HDMI, RCA to coax, and coax splitters to all my TVs. I even added an infrared breakout box to extend remote control signals to every room using 3.5mm extension cables. I could point a universal remote at any TV and change HDMI inputs or sources on every screen. And if you’re feeling really nostalgic, you could even go further back-coax to radio signals and watch your TV on rabbit ears in glorious black and white!

Lain is interesting in how it kind of has unintentional Analog Futurism vibes even though it's subject matter is all about the dawning of the digital age. Thing is Japan was making stuff in 16:9 was sooner then the US, they had HD TV as early as 1989, you can see a 16:9 Flat Screen TV in Hotaru's Bedroom in Sailor Moon S. And Lain was one of those. So I kind of want someone to create a 16:9 CRT just to watch Serial Experiments Lain on it.

@@Mentallysubnormal gotta pop it open and check the mains fuse. Common failure mechanism in CRTs is either a shorted horizontal deflection transistor, or a shorted high voltage regulator transistor. Pull both, and measure them. Also check for bad electrolytic capacitors. The ones in mine measured fine but I replaced a bunch of them anyways. If none of the big transistors are shorted, check for power supply voltage on the control board. This is not beginner stuff. Cathode can hold a 600v charge so be careful! Discharge the cathode before doing any troubleshooting. All you need is a soldering iron, a desoldering method (i use a hakko fr301) and a multimeter. Watching on a PS3 Original Fat Model with Component cables and watching blu-rays off that (some adjustments have to be made to remove the borders but after that is done it looks phenomenal). The other is playing off a modded Wii and playing media off a USB/external HDD. Also with component cables. Despite my PVM only allowing up to 480i instead of 480p, interlaced picture feels more authentic to the retro feel imo. 480p is great if you prefer sharper picture but most people don't notice on CRT's, I'd say the 480i/480p difference is more transparent on LCD's anyways.

I enjoy watching as much media, of all types, as possible on my CRT. I've had two recently. One I got for free, one was $10 locally. The first one broke, the second one has been working nicely. I hoard VHS Tapes, and it is not uncommon for me to record off of my computer, onto a tape, so that I can have a physical copy of whatever I like. If you're looking for a good, well maintained, CRT, I recommend becoming friends with as many old people in your town as possible, and then just casually dropping that you want an old TV in conversation. When you throw out words like "retro" - or say that you want to use it for anything specifically - people see dollar signs. I like watching old cartoons (non-anime) and horror movies on mine, primarily. Other than that, it's my dedicated Gamecube / PS2 screen.

I recently dug out my childhood CRT television. My grandparents bought it for me in 2001! What I've been doing is using a Raspberry Pi 3 with OSMC installed and watching anime that way. Akira. Inuyasha. Bebop. Looks amazing. I'd also encourage anybody to learn some minor maintenance under the hood on these things. Learn some preventative safety measures and they're not that scary to work on as long as you're mindful. But odds are depending on how old the set is, you'd be well served to get something running the 240p Test Suite (I use it w/ the Wii HBC) to figure out the focus, color rings, convergence, etc, smpte color and contrast accuracy. The endgame, though, is figuring out how to get RGBS out of the OSD and getting component output. Then, a whole world of console modding is open. I'd never say that these old tv's are better than a modern hi-res LCD or OLED, but I'd also never use pliers like a socket wrench or a flathead screwdriver like a chisel. These tv's still have their place for older formats.

I got lucky and the Panasonic worked great. It was also nice to get a size and image upgrade. The Panasonic has component and S-Video as well. Mine is mainly used for games, but I defenitely enjoy watching videos on there as well!

had that happen to my CTR pc screen when pc games where just new, I played a pc game where they had something and said you needed to find a magnet to pull it to you, I had a magnet in my room, so decided to use that magnet. didn't work, since apaerently the game wanted me to use a very speciffic magnet found in the game itself. from that I have learned however that if I ever make a game where I tell people to use a magnet, that I should also check the devices magnet sensors to see if they try to use a real magnet to allow that to also work.

I got mine originally for retro games, then I started watching a lot on western cartoons. Old or new cartoons it doesn't really matter they actually all look pretty good on it. I honestly get when you say I got nerd strength. I had need strength then I started body building for a while and I was able to get a huge 37" CRT when I saw it on the side of the rode. It is awesome, I watch mostly KZbin on it through my PS3 with component cables and you have to hope the stuff your watching has a good quality upload. The rest I get stuf on DVD or blu-ray to watch on so I get the best of both worlds. Things like Ben 10 and Teen Titans can be picked up at a decent price.

In my case, I have a small Thomson CRT TV which I started using as a videogames screen, but one day I was watching Sakura Cardcaptor on my main TV and the thougth came to my mind. "These old anime/cartoons where made in a world where CRT's where almost the only option, and even tho they look grate, they're only using 480P, I wonder how they would look on my CRT" Then I started using my old Chromecast on that TV for almost a week, since it stopped working because of overheating (The Chromecast), but I loved how they look. So I'm glad this video came out, because I also think that CRTs should be known for more than gaming.

Fun Fact: one anime in particular is actually optimized for CRT TVs. Serial Experiments Lain. I'm not sure the exact details, but in some of the episodes there are images and text that are overlayed onto scenes that you can just barely make out with a CRT TV. they were added to make the viewer feel creeped out to add to the psychological horror experience. however, on a modern LED TV, these little things are not only much more visible, they're clearly present. There's no second guessing yourself to make you think: "Did I really just see that?" like when it originally aired on TV and you couldn't rewind it.

We live in a culture that has been near obsessed with picture quality and high detail graphics for over 20 years now, and high fidelity sound longer than that, assuming the whole time that objectively better technology and objectively clearer picture quality means an objectively better experience. But I think we're starting to slowly find out that that isn't true. I remember when Red Dead Redemption 1 came out and hearing people complain that they're using "older graphic styles like past gen games." Now that's not entirely true, but the visual style of the game was NOT as clear and high-detail as some of the its contemporaries. And I LOVED it. I loved it so much I didn't understand why people were complaining. It reminded me of the Godfather game's visual style. It was gritty, dirty, imperfect, and rugged. Perfect for an old west game, just like it was perfect for an inner-city mafia game. There's something about the dirtiness that both blurs certain elements together while maintaining their raw look. This is similar to a lot of anime made in the 90s and 2000s that excelled in that realistically slightly-dirty and "lived-in" visual design. And CRTs display this rather perfectly. And yes, I played RDR1 on a CRT. When I watch most TV shows made these days with ultra HD camera tech, displayed on a 4K flatscreen, I actually hate it. It LOOKS like a movie set with actors, not a realistic depiction of a scene. I can see so much more detail in the show than I would even see in real life, it's actually distracting from the actual story, and makes any kind of bad acting (even some good acting) look hilariously fake. Because it's displaying something MORE "realistic" than things actually look in real life. Real life is dirty, gritty, imperfect, and flawed. I can't usually see every stitch in someone's coat, or at least I don't notice, I see the person and how they behave. And speaking of anime made these days, it's like much of it exists in a world entirely devoid of dirt. The characters are often overly simplistic looking because of this, and rather the visual style focuses on lighting, shading, and special fx. Which they do a great job of, or would in a vacuum, but the fight scenes now just up looking like a planetarium light show, rather than a high stakes battle with the characters' lives on the line in a raw, unforgiving world. Now, a lot of that is due to styles and tones just changing over time, but it's also due to this long history of assuming that "better picture" and "better special fx" means better art. I saw a poll asking whether fans preferred the old hand-drawn style of DBZ vs the new software-based animations, and a decisive majority chose the former. I find the shading and overall effect of the modern style to be beautiful, but... just hard to take too seriously. Everyone looks like an idealized, sanitized version of their character, whereas the old style depicted a grittily realistic world where dirt and dust flew as the characters pummeled each other and ripped their enemies limb from limb. In fact, because of this, this old gritty style contains a lot MORE detail than the new style! It looks as if I stepped right out my door to witness a battle between Saiyans, instead of a perfectly manicured media product for my viewing entertainment. Anyways, all of this is to say that sometimes clearer picture, high definition, and super flashy special fx, DOESN'T necessarily make a better picture. In fact, as some of us are finding out, a grittier style with a CRT actually... often looks better.

This is why 4K and 8K video has not taken off. You can see makeup, skin blemishes, studio lighting, too much background detail that is unimportant to the frame. It really takes you out of the experience and less immersed.

Sometimes you must loose something to appreciate it. I guess CRT's are like that, they had so much vibe to them, so many true benefits as well. Then we focused on certain features that are awesome but don't benefit all of us and we all switched to plasma, then to LED's and now OLEDs (and some others now). I feel CRT's still have some place on our shelves, maybe not as a replacement of our big OLED tv's but as an extension.

I still have a old CRT TV, but it actually also is still my only own and main tv. I guess it would be a good use for it since modern screens really annoy my eyes. next to that CRT's have that electrostatic 3d mist effect on when which happens when they are on for a while. I mostly only used it for my ps1. high powerusage indeed will be a problem however. availability will indeed probably also go down a lot, because obviously they aren't really made anymore, and have some charm, but next to that getting repair parts might get harder and people might also use certain parts from them for self made medical equipment or for defence related uses, especially with big countries making wars everywhere these days(many old CRT tv's actually contain parts very hard and expensive to get these days which with some slight modification can be used to make highly advanced and super effective practically invisible defence/weapon systems/direct energy weapons, might also be some governments might even at some point try to ban them from being sold or such at some point due to this. ofcource it requires a lot of understanding and skill to be able to use those parts to make such devices, but it is possible if you know how and they are insanely effective mostly due to being essentially invisible and unhearable. as for tips on how to use those tv's for anime and such I know little other than the basics and ofcource to perhaps get more, especially if you can get them for free since some parts are things as good as impossible to get your hands on these days.

It doesn’t have to be CRTs, it can also be old TVs that didn’t have the VCR feature. As long as it works SMS you have an antenna that works, you can play old consoles on it. You can also use a separate VCR, DVD player, or even a 2 in 1 VCR/DVD player like what I have. I have 2 since the 2000’s and they still work. Me and my family use one of them the most that’s always plugged into the living room TV. We often watch DVDs on it and we sometimes watch whatever VHS tapes we still have if we’re in the mood to watch a certain movie, mainly because they’re often the only copies of a movie that we have! I’m glad I still have most of them that still work!

I can still find them on the side of the street or for very cheap on makret place. And my scout troop use to do a videogame night where we go to his wood shop and play ps2 and wii games all night. So he has a lot of CRT. Im waiting on a larger 38"(i think thats how big it is) to get when i clear out space in my basement

something you have to remember is how much a director might have accounted for the CRT TVs particular blooming effect in the final composition of the show. A good example is the OP from Serial Experiments Lain. Watched now on an LCD monitor in HD it just looks like Lain is on TV. Watched on a CRT she's a ghost barely fading in over the static.

I had a 13" Sony Trinitron, and some others. Last gorgeous one was a Sony flat CRT ~30". While I agree videogames around that era were designed for CRTs, a good Sony OLED nowadays blows me away every time with HDR content. Aint no way Im going back. VHS and Beta are low resolution, home grade copies. Even DVDs are crap. If anime is available in blu ray, go for it and use a modern OLED. For games, either nostalgia into a CRT or live with it. The emulators have filters to blend the pixels and they do a great job, since modern screens have ~16 pixels were there was 1, the original "art" apperance is back, as opposed to those early pixelated images when the transition was happening (screens had still around the same pixel size so there is no blending opportunity and the pixels were clearly swuare dots visible to naked eye). Sure, Id be thrilled to see content on CRT every once in a while, but its a small screen and after decades, I feel we can close this chapter of tech transition issues.
