It blows my mind that Celty is the most ordinary person in the cast. She is the least weird of them all.
@ProfessorViral2 жыл бұрын
Especially in the second half of the season. She learns to enjoy everyday, and live like a normal, happy person, while everyone else is trying to protect their everyday life, and by doing so slowly destroy them

I'm sure that's the whole point. The Supernatural Being with no head with a sentient bike is actully the most normal and human character that understands what simply living your life means. Literally Celty at the beggining of the show: "The world is not as bad as you think it is"

Watching durarara was such a nuanced experience for me. I could barely sit through the first few episodes, but once I learned the characters and realized that everything was somehow connected and meant something I became utterly hooked. For me the first 3 episodes were the 10/10 episodes. But admittedly when I watched it for the first time one year prior to when I gave it a second chance, it was really boring and I dropped on 2nd episode. But smh second time rewatching those two episodes got me hooked in so much with it's unique narrative and atmosphere. Idk, it somewhat resembles Monogatari for me

Honestly, Shizuo is one of the most underrated anime badasses of all time. The strength of the average character in the show is surprisingly realistic and reasonable-which highlights how honest to God absurd Shizuo is as someone that's SUPPOSED to be a human. A human even monsters are terrified of. He's literally the Doom Guy of Ikebukuro, and nobody puts respect on his name.
@ProfessorViral2 жыл бұрын
I do love that most of the strength in the series comes from supernatural forces, and then Shizuo basically just has no limiter

@@ProfessorViral I love the fact that-despite being completely human, he's a monster even other monsters steer clear from. Honestly one of the GOATs for the 'powerhouse' type of character.

One of the most unique anime out there. The story is on point, the animation is top tier and the characters are believable as far as their "human" side goes, making them relevant, in spite of the "supernatural" side. It just shows how so many characters can be introduced by linking them to unexpected occurrences and circumstances that add a whole new layer to the seemingly ordinay city vibe. Brilliant.

Durarara!!! has a lot of concept characters. It treats ideas for characters like a science fiction might treat its premise. A lot of great science fiction comes from taking one relatively simple premise and really thinking through all of its implications, which then reflect back on what exists in the real world. Durarara!!! is probably the best thing I've ever seen for this type of character writing, and it really helps characters who might not all get a ton of screen time pop and be memorable. I know you umm, uhh, kind of touched on that already. But it's a classification of how to write characters that exists in my head which I wanted to get out. Hunter X Hunter does this too, but not to the same degree.

Durarara was one of my biggest stepping stones when getting into anime, as someone whos father had netflix and back when Drr was on it watched all of it in one sitting. It gave me a lot of insight that I didnt know it was until rewatching series this year for nostalgia sake. it genuinely taught me the biggest theme you mentioned, about living in the present is better then waiting for what comes in the future. I dont truly remember what first lured me to the series, maybe it was Celty? Maybe it was the name of the anime itself. But one thing for sure, I did not regret watching it back then. I still dearly love the characters and setting, maybe one other rewatch is in order

The novels are really good too especially after watching the anime. It gives the characters more depth. Some important scenes weren't included in the anime ;( 7:06 especially when it comes to Izaya lol, the anime Izaya and novel Izaya seem quite different. The novel really brings our his complexity as a character. Anyway drrr is worth watching for the humor alone if you're not keen on philosophy and morals, the characters (honorable mention to Shingen, I love this weird dad man) crack me up every time.

I really liked the first season a lot. The second (split into 3 parts) was a huge letsdown to me however. These are the main reasons: To many characters / unrelevant storylines: the little Awakusu Girl, the blonde russian assasin, Izayas sisters, Shizuos Brother and his spouse. All of these characters are new (or get much spotlight only) in the second season . Their story lines and characters feel weaker than what season 1 did. They take way too much od the original casts screentime and they dont seem to add too much to the story . Izaya and Shizuo. The sister and brother (incest ew) . Celty and Shinra. Simon and the russian Sushi. Mikado, Masami and Airi. The dollars, yellow scarfes and blue gang. These were the keyplayers of season 1. That worked . Everyone was connected, had history and business with others and EVERY action impacted the plot. Izaya constantly manipulating and scheming everyone in this city to brew Conflict . The meaningful storylines of Celty and Shinra, the main trio, Shizuo and Izaya. The atmosphere of the city, the weirdness and that greaz unique concept. Thats what i cherished about season 1, it was something special. Season 2 still has some qualites of season 1, but it tunes down a LOT on them tbh. Way to many characters, not necessary or more importantly Interesting plotlines.
