Fear of rejection really affects creativity in general.. I don't think creating bad songs is bad since there's a lot of successful bad songs out there. It's worse to never put yourself out and never release your songs. Everything you create is unique therefore you can't create something bad but simple and different. As a musician myself I feel like if I just express myself and release all my songs without worrying about what other people will think things would've been better. If only we talented musicians were not afraid of fully expressing and trusting our creativity, things would've been much better.

It could be awful to be known for a really bad song though. Or remembered for having a song you made that you truly hated, but now it's played millions of times around the world.

@@shitmandood dude that last thing is what happened to me and it made me quit music haha Success in whatever form is the worst thing to achieve as an artist. Even more so if it's with something you don't like yourself. Can't recommend lmao

shitmandood I think this happens with all very popular musicians. For example Radiohead hates the song Creep, but many people for like a decade knew them only because of it song. And there are always people who want to dig deeper than one song and appreciate everything you do)

I think the point here is more in what we consider to be a bad song may seem quite good for an outside listener. we’re just too critical for our own songs. Because we know how and from what we did it and for us there is no "magic" in them.

Inspiring words. Writing for the sake of writing is the way to hone the craft and the path to true self-expression. 10,000 bad songs is greater than 10,000 unfulfilled dreams.

People are bent on being like those they admire... and odds are, you'll never be like those you admire. You should learn to admire yourself, and find the interesting, or fun, or funny, or whatever, things that YOU do. Stop trying to be something you're not and learn to like what you are. Learn to appreciate your own interesting thing to say. Nebs is right... just record everything that you like doing. Have fun, and don't be critical of yourself at all. Do what you like. Do what YOU think is fun. Accept what you are, and stop trying to achieve something with what you are. And magically... by not trying to be something, but doing what you love, you'll achieve something. Great video, sir! Black and white... I have never made, nor considered making, a black and white video... but dang, it's really effective! Also, that's a great patch.

This is great and much needed for a lot of us. Reminds me of an Ira Glass quote... "All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. For the first couple years you make stuff, it's just not that good. … But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. It's going to take a while, it's normal to take a while. You've just gotta fight your way through."

There's this one song that i really love and i'm really proud of, and i'm re working on it ten years after to finally finish it properly. Now while digging up my old projects and demos i was listening to this very very bad song, nothing made sense in it, it was pieces of guitar one after the other, clearly souding like someone that was tired of writing stuff, but in the middle of it was something that i forgot, and it was the intro of that one son i'm proud of, everything was there, just a tiny portion that helped me create something i love, in the middle of garbage, and i totally forgot about that! Sometimes taking things too seriously and overthinking is what's hold us back when we compose, but in the middle of loads of garbage you can always find a treasure!

This is exactly what I'm doing. Tell the interior critic that I'm doing this anyways instead of doing nothing. For me less an intentional badness than admitting to myself that I'm no good and going to make stuff anyways. And that by making stuff, my stuff will become more what I wanted, which will become what I would call good. Or better.

This resonates with me. I'm sure I will return to it again and again. I've written one complete song (with a partner writing the lyrics and vocal melody). We've written maybe a half-dozen partial songs. The reason I completed that one song was that my time was limited - I was on vacation - and I wanted to complete SOMETHING in the timespan of that vacation. You're advice to write something bad, combined with a time limit, is an excellent way to be more productive (and to get better through practice).

27 years! oh dear I think I am out of time. Mind you I have been writing for some time now so guess that counts also. Good advise and something we should adhere to as the more you practise the better you get. If you don't start you go nowhere, no journey ever got anywhere if you don't actually take that first step. Strive for excellence and not perfection. Thank you for this.

I compose moods and ambient music on-the-fly based upon a set of sounds or a sequence etc. Once I like it , I just hit record and go. This is scary and risky and most takes are flawed in some way and end up on the cutting room floor, so I am used to trashing most of it, but it is worth it when I finally weave an audio tapestry that works just right. That being said, sometimes you need to walk away because it just isn't working that day no matter what you try and do.

It depends... On the other side, perfection is a cosmic principle. „Try and error“ underlies all existenz, but any creation comes out of the unreachable perfection itself. So any try is not done in a frowsy way. Man can do things in a frowsy way, but that is an aspect of the perfection, manifasting humanity in all its aspects. If a human creates music, he could strive for perfection as hard as he can. It does not really matter, what is the result out of his insistence. Itˋs more a kind of characteristic. And yes, it could be totally frustrating. But I'm fine with it, if someone never comes to a result or end. It depends on what kind of musician you are, and what you want to do. Nobody can want what he wants, so if you want to make music just for the fun of it, go for it and have fun! And if you want to create a master peace, the world has never been listened to before, go for it and suffer!

This answer he presents is for those who are stuck and don't start or can't finjsh. A perfectionist doesn't have an issue with creating. In fact they over create with the intention of finding the perfect version. What a lot people do inorder to excuse their inactiveness is claim perfectionism. A real perfectionist would work on a drawing for years or trash it a 100 times and draw it another 100 times. Not refrain from creating because they feel inadequate. And how do you solve this. Create 10000 bad songs/drawings without carrying. Which ultimately produces the same results of a perfectionist, without the toxic mentality (subjective). Lol in the just create, I just like to type.

@onceuponasynth5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel you, I have tons of sketches sitting on my HD. I think that's where "done is better than perfect" comes in. I find that if I force myself to finish a song it gives me momentum to keep going. Don't stress about if it's good or bad. Just keep finishing songs and eventually some good ones will pop up.
