That was my first thought, but it is very early in the video when you simply said "if you want to draw pretty people, continue doing so." It's so weird that people are willing to use their time saying something without first using their time to get what's needed to have an intelligent opinion. I certainly hope they grow out of it, or they will spend an entire life voicing dumb thoughts.

That's why I am trying to stray away from Instagram, cause I had my fair share of terrible people on there with horrible art trends that are more hurtful than good inside the art community, I met people who I thought were close to me but ended up caring more about the art and followings they got and left me as soon as they got popular off or doing trends, and turned sour. Honestly social media is a hell scape and that's why I don't have so much digital pleasure in being on my phone anymore and feeding into the algorithm, it really does effect your mental well being! Well said everything here ✨ Edit: not everyone after blowing up will turn sour I know that, I'm I'm stating it changes people sometimes and they let popularity get to their head

You put into words what I've been feeling for months, I feel like it's a big trend recently to only draw "hot" and "gorgeous" people and everyone think it's the way to go if you want to grow as an artist, when that's a huge, huge lie. Remember what Hayao Miyazaki once said - "whether you can draw like this or not, is not what matters (as in, only drawing "good" is not what will make you grow) what really matters is that if a girl like this would exist in real life" (he talked about the importance of making his characters as close to the human heart as possible) I think a lot of people have forgotten that art is first and foremost supposed to be something well, fun... to be able to express yourself and have fun with people close to you, to me, that's what art should be about.

I’ll be off topic but I loved your commentary about this aspect of the art community! I feel like commentary art channels have lost it popularity due to the lack of drama. I say this because I looked at your channel and realised that I don’t come across this content anymore. I used to wait patiently for updates for art channels to spill the tea, and despite how toxic it was, we ate it up. It was polarising and created discussions. I suppose it’s a good sign, because that means no one is getting hurt anymore. I wasn’t really going anywhere with this, but this particular video made me reminisce back when people would be pumping out this type of content. The art community is still around, but the vibe just feels different. :)

also how fanart is the only way to get see much easier and those people won't stay for your ocs. only the fandom fanart they like that you've made. and how hard it is to make a drawing or reel look interesting because ideas are hard, especially if you have to post everyday to even get notified. currently besides wanting to be seen by others on Instagram, I just post for my friends and people I hope are interested in my sillies (my ocs)

Also a bit of a side note but a lot of people seems also to confuse drawing pretty art with drawing traditionally attractive people, wich is pretty harmful to artists and spectators both in some way in my opinion Cause like, then you feel like only those specific type of people and proportions are worth seeing and you start to see other traits as ugly irl too I know I realised that drawing my profile picture, where at first I struggled drawing a character that actually felt like me, but then I did a design where I put, exaggerated and stylised every "flaw" in my face and it actually made the design look a lot more right and even made me feel better about those things

I struggle a lot with perfectionism and comparing my art to other(usually) more skilled artists and it’s hard for me to just draw for fun because my brain is convinced it has to look perfect and I don’t even post my art! I have so many art styles I enjoy but I can’t even make art half the time cause I’m not confident enough in my skills and I can’t focus enough to do proper studies which is really frustrating because I want to be able do things like character design and backgrounds and props cause I’m studying animation and I also want to make comics at some point but I just feel burnt out.

I have a lot of respect for artists and art as a whole. The amount of work people put into their craft is so admirable. I’m a firm believer that art is for expression. Whether that be a concept, an emotion, an experience, or just there for the sake of being there, art is to express something. Seeing different styles that represent one’s creativity, is so cool to me. Personally, I really like dark and gloomy art; it speaks to me more than what would be considered more “conventional” (don’t get me wrong, conventional art is just as pretty, and I love it as much as the next person.) but I find great enjoyment out of more “ugly,” and I use that word very loosely, pieces that don’t follow this narrow view of art needing to be perfect and pretty and appeal to a wider audience. I think all art is beautiful, and that’s a mindset we need to foster in children.

I haven't been able to draw in over a year as nothing I made was good enough and now when I try and draw I give up because it's not up to my standard. One way I've always seen it is that social media is a separate skill from art. If you choose to focus on social media, the best path is to create consistent, "aesthetic" art and videos. If you want to focus on art however, taking your time and creating less glamorous work that actually helps you improve is much more beneficial. I want to be a professional artist, and I don't have the time to focus on posting every other day if I really want to make it in the industry. This is reinforced whenever I see professional, veteran artists from Disney/Pixar or certain comics that have fewer followers than me despite the reach of their work in the real world. You don't have to choose both, and there are ways to make it without having sold your soul to social media corporations.

Ironically, I was listening to this while working on pretty art 😂 Slight over sharing, the art is for my grandma, who’s slowly dying as she no longer wants to take her Parkinson’s medication (I completely respect that, Parkinson’s isn’t something to just shrug off), but before she passes, she wanted me and my sister to draw our own perception of her. Not in any sorta vain way or anything, but I think it’s just something she wants to be happy about before she passes. She loves us a lot, and the pretty art I’m working on is to reflect on how beautiful (but fading) soul she has and that it needs to be made before her time is up As for pretty art itself, that was something I struggled getting out of the habit of drawing for a great deal of my youth, but I think starting in my late teens, I broke out of that a bit and went more for a combination of cute and creepy which I love a lot even to this day. It’s always good to diversify the feel of one’s art, and as someone who’s trying to get back into doing art after months of having severe art block, it’s definitely advice to hold on to

Okay so as someone who LOVES drawing pretty/flamboyant/over-decorated characters (both human and furry), admittedly mostly sexy lanky anime men: there is a lot of pressure on social media to make "pretty things" all the time and I agree it can be harmful and toxic, especially if you want to draw a variety of things or only glorify the pretty things. Especially if yo're not being real with how difficult art really is. I feel that if I mix my pretty characters with dark topics or post my "prugly"/horror art in the same space I have my pretty art it's mostly the pretty or at least "interesting" art that gets more likes, even if the horror art means more to me or took longer. But really most artists are people too and have a diversity of opinions like most other people on the planet, you don't have to be "the pretty one" every single time. Or even be pretty in the same ways. I've been experimenting with other body shapes recently in my art and it's been fun even when it's kinda... well, not pretty lol. But it's perfectly fine to have special interests in the types of characters you enjoy drawing, pretty or not (within reason). I think that it's better to encourage growth in artists generally than to say "don't feel pressure to draw x, y or z" because some artists love popular art styles but don't feel like they want to challenge themselves to make that style their own. I personally want to see artists grow even if I like their older art better.

i agree with a lot of these points, however i also would like to point out that not all beginner artists are children or young and there's also a lot of 30 - 60 year olds or older folks who are also about to start an art career or are complete beginners to drawing altogether or are just learning how to hold a pencil. A lot of the points you mentioned in this Video apply to them too. I loved the video and i found it helpful. It was just a little disheartening that in the art community there is an assumption that "beginner artist = young". This is by no means a criticism of you only or this video only, it's just something where I wish more creators and people who engage in the community would acknowledge that older beginner artists exist too and not every person who is just starting out is a child or young. Some are 50 or 60. Definitely no hate to you though! It's just something I want to mention to people in hopes to bring more awareness to the issue, since as an adult beginner it felt very daunting to enter the art community at such an "old age " (27 lol) and feel excluded partially because of language like that. Partially because everyone else seemed to already be a master at like 16 and I'm heading to my 30s and can barely draw a stick figure. Learning to draw then when everyone refers to beginner artists as "young artists" aka children feels like people like me shouldn't be there. I know this wasn't your intention or anyone's really, but it would be nice if everyone reconsidered how they talk about this to make the space more inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Like I said though, absolutely not trying to be rude! I did find a lot of your points helpful and learned a lot :)

i disagree, only pretty people exist. There is no such thing as a person who is unbeautiful. This takes humans out of the picture and anything thats humanized or anything anthropomorphic. So, whats left? Feral animals, pants, backgrounds, buildings, vehicles, ect. I do agree people should expand the horizon if they want to make it big. But I feel as hobbyists should draw as they please, EVEN humans. That concludes my statement. (I made this stupid argument to make fun of people who are strict pls don't take it seriously LMAO I haven't watched th video yet) Either way, succumbing to beauty standards is stupid because they keep changing. 😋 Nothing will ever be perfect, art and looks wise, just do you man.
