Why you shouldn't knit that chunky roving blanket you saw on Pinterest

We explain why it's not the best idea to knit that cute chunky roving blanket you saw on Pinterest. If you're a knitter you probably know what we're talking about, every few months people will share images of super squishy bulky blankets knitted out of wool roving.
Emily knitted up some swatches with merino roving and US50 needles and leaves them on her couch for a month to demonstrate how these roving blankets will really wear with time. We have images of the swatches at 1 week, 2 weeks, and 1 month. In addition we put one of the swatches through the washer and dryer (laundry accidents can happen even in a knitters home!). We even let a puppy have a go at one of the swatches.
This is our PSA to try and save the wool. If you want a super chunky blanket, try buying super bulky yarn, holding multiple yarns together, or spinning a super chunky yarn of your own!
If you're curious this is the fiber we used: woolery.com/su...
You can read more about this experiment on our blog!

I found this video about a year too late, LOL. My wife was adamant about making one of those blankets and I warned her I thought it was a bad idea. When we went to the local knitting/weaving shop even the lady there tried to dissuade my wife, but she insisted. So, $300 worth of roving later she has this big blanket that IMMEDIATELY just picks up tons of cat and dog fur and all kinds of gross stuff. After a week the thing was disgusting. To top this bad idea off, my wife decides to throw it in the washing machine to clean it! Yeah... I bet you can see where this is going... It completely destroyed our washing machine. So not only did this stupid blanket cost $300 in materials, but it also cost us a $1,000 washing machine.

I actually suspected this might happen if I made a blanket / throw, so haven't made one... So many people are promoting arm knitting with this wool, just imagine how much wool ended up in the bin. Thanks for taking the time / spending the money to get this video out for everyone. I definitely will not be wasting my money on one of these 👍🏼 💐

I knit one of these blankets a few years ago and I love it. I used it as a blanket in my college dorm for about a year before retiring it to a wooden trunk in my room, where it still looks great after three years. It's not falling apart or covered in filth even after not washing it for three years, the color is still great, the stitches still have their definition. If you're going to invest hundreds of dollars into something, you should probably not let your dog use it as a chew toy and then blame it on the blanket being a bad idea. The only problem I ever had with mine was it leaves behind fuzzballs, so I put it on a hard surface. I do agree the pictures you see of it on pinterest are misleading because it looks a lot more solid than it actually is and is a lot better as a decoration than an actual blanket.

I learned this after i made a handmade queen size merino wool blanket it was very pretty and all. But like you said in the video it has no structure and the wool got stuck everywhere. I mean absolutely everywhere my clothes,carpet, etc. super hard to get off. and after I washed it a lot of the wool was clogged in my washing machine. It was a disaster. I just wish I found this video before I learned the hard way hahaha 🌹

Ive seen acrylic yarn in this style that might work, since those fibres are way longer so the stiches have a chance of stabilising it, but it would probably still not be a very durable blanket. 3-5 strands of chunky yarn can make a very chunky blanket that holds up and is quick and easy to make

Bulky wool roving yarn is no joke, I learned that the hard way when thinking I could dye it a cool color. Being a semi-new knitter, I had no knowledge of what the outcome would have been, but it was so badly felted after it dried. Thank you for this video! Hopefully more knitters are able to come across this video before tackling a project.

As a spinner, weaver, and knitter (but not a Pinterest user) I've got to say this was so much fun to watch ... you gals are a hoot! But, seriously, I can't imagine using roving to knit with, for all the reasons you explain. And Merino? Or maybe Alpaca? Omigosh, you might as well burn your money! By the way, was any of that dog-ravaged fiber even salvageable to maybe re-card and spin?

@xyzsame4081

@@coldstuff9784 so now even knitting and the (foolish) use of wool has become political ?? Good grief. - No: the newly knit blankets LOOK GOOD and they are NOTICED when the images are uploaded. That is why clueless posters upload those photos. or they know what they are doing but post it anyway. A shop that does not want the consumers coming back to complain will give good advice (honest and based on experience). They would not survive if they were not competent (and the limits of what you can do with a material is part of their expertise). But every idiot or rookie or attention seeker or person making money by pushing a certain product can post everything on social media. it is not political. I have to admit the _pics_ look lovely (if the knitter had clean hands - else they have to do some photshopping). Some posters might get carried away (and after one week of use when they realize the problems, they are not going to admit that the post that got them the likes was a giant and probably expensive) mistake. Others do "marketing" for companies that sell the material (when have advertisers ever mislead or not well adivised consumers !) others just look out for any post that will get attention. That is a lot of things (foolish, dishonest, a waste of time and money) - but not political. Or are you for pinterest banning all pics for roving blankets ? Free speech and all ?? (from your jab on "liberals" I take it you consider yourself maybe to be a "conservative". Spoken like a true conservative. Let's censor roving and what use of wool is legit and what not.

Thank you so much for making this video (and YT for recommending it to me!) - I saw these kits on Etsy and really wanted to buy it. I'm just a beginner knitter but I thought this would be amazing and I was so close to buying it, but obviously the price tag made me put it in my wishlist instead of automatically buying. I had concerns about my cat destroying it, but I had no idea it would disintegrate and get messed up to THIS degree. I've yet to try to learn spinning (though I want to), so I guess I didn't realize how roving would act. Thank thank thank you for enlightening me before I spent 200 something dollars.

Don't even put it over a chair in a guest room--it'll be covered in dust in no time, and there's no way to get the dust off. I make needle-felted creations, and the first few I made, I didn't felt down enough, and they attract dust like no buddies business, and there's no way to get the dust off without unfelting it. Now I felt all my things very solidly, having learned my lesson the hard way!

I think there are like fabric sausages, you could use for arm knitted blankets. What I did was use up all of my acrylics to make like 12ply or more yarn cakes and arm knit them. It's ofc way too lacy for a full fletched blanket, but its a cute deco blanket and a great stash buster.
