Yup I lost 8 years ncb , when I had a break from motorcycling. Insurance companies know how to rinse you !

It's all a rip-off, sadly😥

I don't think a vehicle needs to be fully road legal to be insurable, therefore a non MOT'ed, SORN'ed vehicle registration should be enough to get 'continuous' minimal insurance (perhaps third party only if its in bits and therefore unlikely to be stolen anyway and of no practical value) and preserve NCD. I see loads of destroyed or uneconomic to repair scooters on Market Place that would fit the bill for little money.

Good advice Mark, this does enable you to maintain the no claims discount. I'll give you £50 for your Triumph Street triple.😆

@@bankruptpensioner You don't need my beautiful Street, you've got that rusty pile of scrap in the corner of the garage with Boneville on the tank!🤣

I agree, if you build up a no claims discount , gaps in taking out insurance should not mean you loose the no claims. I also think it is wrong that you run the risk of loosing no claims if an accident occurs that it not your fault.

When we talk about insurance, it always feels a bit of a rip off😬

I am in the U.S., but have learned that it is always better to remain continuously insured.

That sounds like a voice of common sense, cheers Edward👍

Might be wrong but it sounds illegal to me unless you have your son as a "named" rider on the policy and if your therefore supposed to be the "main" rider and your not i couldn't see the insurer paying out for any accident. Knowing insurance companies they look for any reason whatsoever not to pay out. My advise is be upfront and squeaky clean or you'll regret it.

That's fair comment Ian, being open and honest is often the best approach👍

You can insure yourself for any vehicle you have the owners permission to use even if they already have that vehicle insured. You do not need to name the owner on your policy. You do need to declare you do not own the vehicle and have their permission to insure it. It's called a non owner insurance policy and will cost you more than if you were the owner.

I think if you are unfortunate to have an accident and of course dependant of the circumstances it's probably better not to claim if you can afford to get it fixed yourself thus avioding losing your NCD? I can't comment on taking a break from the insurance having never done that.
@bankruptpensioner28 күн бұрын
You are right, if you have an off, in most situations, it's cheaper to just repair it yourself in the long run👍
@stefanomonte-t9z28 күн бұрын
No it's perfectly legal to insure yourself on a relatives bike but they do ask if you're the registered owner but just lie they will never check up as it's not in their interests to decline free money, it's a win win for both

My insurance company told me it was 18 months. Lost my full ncd after a period away from biking.
@Jimb0b111129 күн бұрын
They lied, it's 2 years. Some companies like bikesure for example will take older ncd into consideration if you ask nicely.

That is not good news, John. It takes a long time to build back your no Claim's discount, and it's a crazy rip off.😥
@bren10627 күн бұрын
You don't make clear whether the son is riding the bike as a named driver. If he is then as he is the main rider that is known as fronting, and insurance companies will void such a policy. If you mean you took out a separate policy on his bike while he was already insuring it in his own name then you cannot have two policies running on the same vehicle. I have a second bike sitting in my garage on sorn and it's insured third party with a 5 miles per annum declaration each renewal just to maintain 6 years bonus on that policy, £63 I think it was last renewal. It'll benefit me in the spring when I buy a new bike and sell that one, and it's also insured for me to take it for MOT each year as a 1 day cover just for that trip would cost around £40.
@bankruptpensioner24 күн бұрын
Good point. I insured the bike independently on top of his own policy. So, two completely separate policies. Of course, I never rode his bike, it was simply a process.

Just get a cheap like 400cc about £500 or something have it in your name and just pay insurance on it it can’t be much if your already on full no claims then your not having to insure somebody else’s bike in time if insurance get to realise this they’ll want mot certificate and proof of mileage each year there bound to catch on one day let’s hope it’s not in our time take care Richard ride safe mate

That's great advice Nicholas, let's hope someone takes out of this and do something of the same to maintain their no claims discount👍
