I’m Native American and I grew on the reservation created by the federal government hundreds of years ago. I left after university and didn’t return home due to lack of work, poverty and the rampant addiction. I recently visited the big island and it felt a lot like home (aside from the beautiful beaches). I never realized how much Native Americans and Hawaiians have in common. The people, the culture and the deep love and respect for the land. Much love and respect from my people to yours!

I lived on Oahu for 8 years and loved it. I always respected the locals and never had any problems with locals. I was fortunate to be able to survive on minimum wage and with making money on the side by playing music. It's a dream for many people to live there. But sometimes it's not for everybody and won't be able to stay. It comes down to where you actually belong. If you think you believe you belong somewhere, like Hawaii, won't really be where you belong and it will be hard to realize it. Peace and love.

The "respect" thing is a joke. I live on Kauai for the same amount of time. I've lived in 3 foreign countries, visited over 30 foreign countries, and lived up and down the East Coast. I find the "locals" (however you want to define them, mostly Asian Mix, with maybe .000001 Hawaiian blood quantum) to be socially retarded and outright racists. I moved in to a "local" neighborhood. No one knocked on my door to welcome me to the neighborhood, no one stopped by to say hello, I would wave while walking my dogs only to have people ignore me, and when I passed someone on the street they would put their head down and try to ignore me. "Disrespect"????? Respect is everywhere. The way locals use respect, is like I must bow whenever I am in their presence, and thank the good Lord they allowed me to walk on the street in front of their house. SMH

I was stationed in Hawaii. My tips to being successful in Hawaii. 1) If you on Oahu, don’t be glued to Honolulu area. It’s cheaper and betta living out on the island. 2) Recognize that you’re a Haole. I didn’t get butthurt being called Haole. It’s basically just “visitor” or “outsider” which isn’t an insult. I’m not Hawaiian, so I called myself Haole boy. 3) F**king respect the locals. Learn some damned history, and bother engaging in the culture. Make some local friends, they’ll show you places you wouldn’t have found otherwise. Also, for the few bitter locals that exist, they won’t mess with you if you’re with locals. It’s like an unwritten code. 4) Don’t gripe about how expensive it is. It’s insulting to actual Hawaiians who can barely afford to survive in their native home. Don’t like the prices? Keep it to yourself, or leave. You have no right to complain. 5) Learn to surf. The best things in Hawaii are free. You can get wasted at a bar anywhere. Only in Hawaii can you surf the famous North Shore or Makaha!!

Dude you forgot how much it costs to live there! I am a nurse but even though they need nurses I would have to be living there before I can apply to any of the healthcare jobs. Makes it hard for Hawaiians and houli s alike. Food costs astronomical so one must find place and make a garden if possible to grow as many foods as possible. It is unique with its unique cultural inheritance. I feel passionate about how I could help with health education for people who are facing risks. Lots of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart/ vascular diseases that could potentially be prevented. Even my brother lives there and has been there more than 30 years. His 2 kids and his ex wife there in a different island and it’s even hard for him to get over there and back has to fly inter island or a few times sailed his boat. Had rough weather and made it but close call! The island should promote recruiting people that have skills to help the island people too!

@@sparklejan3 I lived in Maui for a year. The only facts he speaks are the ones he pulls from his ass. That is all you hear about when you're in Maui. The Island has healing powers. Tread lightly on this sacred land. If Maui is sacred land so is everywhere else in the world. They claim to hate Haoles, and Japanese but need their money to live off of, or they would die, and I actually saw some hippie guy bow to some ugly ass bum cause he claimed to be a native. What a complete jerkoff does that. When I was disrespected I held my ground beat the shit out of that "Local" and held him in a ear naked choke till Maui PD showed up. Turned out the guy has like 4 warrants for robbing tourists. And in most cases they're not actually native Hawaiians. They are from other Islands in the South Pacific, and just settled in Hawaii, because of the American money. Anyone that's even thinking about visiting just know Hawaii is apart of the United States. Do whatever is allowed in our constitution. Yes, Hawaii moves at a slower pace, but you're still under the constitution not some bum in a beach chair. I lived in Maui Meadows near South Kihei. Makena was a nice beach. Little beach was a freak show of leftover hippies that are living off trust funds. Theres always this main conflict where the actual Hawaiian leaders want more development, but the white hippies just hug the trees, so nothing gets done. Maui overall I would rate as a D- for vacation spots. I'm from Florida I've been all over the Carribean, and South America, Mexico. Go to Grand Cayman, or the virgin islands. Trust me you'll be happier at the end of the day, and you wont have to listen to a beach bum, and all his bull shit. If you decide to go the food sucks you think being on a Island there would be good seafood wrong, the people are on the next level of socialist filth, and the homeless are everywhere. Theres some truth for you. I was in the Marines Medically retired after my last tour in Iraq. Moved to Maui to clear my head worst move I've ever made. Should have just gone back to Japan. The Japanese are friendly awesome people with a true kick ass culture. Theres barely any crime there. I was stationed there for 2 years loved every second of it. Hiroshima, Osaka, and Tokyo were the best days of my life would love to go back.

Both of us were heartbroken to have to leave. Now we are exploring visiting the big island as it’s more feasible to live there. When we were flying out we ran into a couple who had lived in Maui for a decade plus who said the island either pulls you in and accepts you as part of it or it will spit you back out to tell you it’s not for you. I can’t speak from experience to agree with that but it seems to be the case. I don’t know for sure that it will be for us but I do know the changes I felt inside when I visited and how my heart broke when I had to leave. As far as the locals go, once again I can’t speak for anywhere aside from Maui, but I feel they are similar to the island in that they feel your energy and will either take you in or reject you. Also respect and kindness go a long way….but that should also be the standard for how you everyone which doesn’t seem to be the case for a lot of people.

Like how they are worried now about the Middle eastern muslims occupying much of europe and changing the culture. I totally believe that's ok for Europeans to worry about...who wants to go extinct? I love Europe for it's many cultures and would hate to see that change. Norway isn't like France, Switzerland isn't like Greece. Poland isn't like Italy. Every place retains its own culture while sharing a place within the continent of Europe. . But let a Hawaiian talk the same way, and white people resent them for it. Not protecting themselves is the reason there's only about 5,000 pure Hawaiians left in the world. Put yourself in their shoes and show some compassion.

Although I don’t hate people because of their race I can understand why some people feel this way.. in my case, my people inhabited the land people now call California(it was beautiful and green) fast forward a couple of centuries and my people got pushed back into what is now Baja California after u.s rule. Well now I’m back in Northern California where I’m considered a foreigner in my own land!

Though you didn’t have many things to say positive you did have positive things to say. Your a good person just trying to help people from making a mistake brother thank you. I plan to move to MAUI very soon. I’m retiring from the FD and HI has been calling me since I was a child. I was MAUI’d in 2013 but unfortunately I won’t be bringing her with me. She is from Brazil and we are about to go our separate ways. When we left she said she would never move there because it’s too far from her home and everything else. Too bad for her... We were MAUI’d in 2013. I will be headed that way in two years. Thank you brother Mahalo.

I miss the old international market in Waikiki that was a special/magical place. I understand it’s now been replaced by high end stores, boo. I recently went to Costa Rica, and that is a cool place for chilled people. Just be ready to eat rice, beans and chicken every day which is fine with me. Actually less than 1% of people in HI are Hawaiian natives. Everyone else acts like they think they are. It’s not the elite spot they act like. Also so many fat people. There’s the same tourism in FL but nobody acts like it’s a big deal. HI needs to get over itself. “Hawaiian land stolen from Hawaiian people”. 🙄 Hawaiian Kingdom rights. Whatever.

Exactly! Honestly, It always seems like it's ok for Europeans to be proud and want to preserve their culture.

As a Haole born and raised in Hawai'i I'm happy to see this video. One of the many reasons most people should not move here is the size of Hawai'i and the amount of visitors and the impact it has. To have so much wear and tear on the land by so many people, the development that follows and the resources required to support large communities is horrible for the preservation of this land. The population issue or "argument" to not live here is one based on ecological and environmental effects not social or cultural. Also the magic my brother here speaks of is unimaginable and incomprehensible without first hand experience. Like trying to describe making love to a virgin, they get it but not at all. This is also not a state, nor a territory it is an illegal militarized occupation of a Sovereign Nation. So if you feel a little 'racism' towards Haoles it not only warranted but not racism in my opinion. At this point it's just being angry at insurgents. I support a Sovereign Hawaii and hope to see it in my life. Yes I'm a United States citizen, Iraq and Afghanistan Airforce veteran and would willingly help a legitimate Sovereign Hawaiian Nation succeed from the U.S.
@alexcarter88074 жыл бұрын
Hawaii could do sovereignity pretty well. Stay a part of the US Postal System as a few other island nations are, keep on friendly terms with the US, but have the US pay rent for the military installations if any are kept (and they'll have to be) and make a much more Socialist and caring society. National health care, free college, etc. You know, like actual first-world nations do. Also nationalize all foreign-owned properties, no foreign-owned hotels, resorts, ranches etc.

I have to be honest-I'm currently in Hawaii, and it feels like this place isn't quite suited for those who aren’t accustomed to the sun year-round. Boston is where you belong, so maybe stay there. There’s an air of entitlement that some visitors bring, acting as if they own the place and lacking respect for the local culture. I’ve found that Black visitors are welcomed warmly here; the locals call me "brother," a term of genuine connection that’s rarely extended to others. And if it is, it often feels insincere. Your ideal vacation here often seems to be a stark reminder of historical struggles rather than a genuine escape. Personally, I came to Hawaii seeking healing, but instead, it feels like the island is in need of its own healing-something that won’t come from those who don’t truly understand or respect it. Despite the polite façades, there’s a contradiction in how some tourists approach the culture, trying to fit in without truly grasping its essence. It’s ironic to see people who lack a deep cultural heritage themselves attempting to navigate and impose upon someone else’s. This is coming from a Black man: Hawaii is not just another part of the U.S. It’s a place with its own spirit and history, deserving of true respect and understanding.

That's an issue that you face everywhere. All land is stolen. At this point in time so many people are migrating for different reasons. Tons of people are moving to where I live (SLC, UT) bc of the low cost of living compared to everywhere else especially Cali. we have awesome mountains and outdoor activities and an "abundance" of well paying jobs. Outsiders are definitely driving up the cost of living here and sure I'm mad about it (I can't buy a house now for a while bc outsiders are paying over asking price in cash...) but there's literally nothing you can do. So oh well. Hawaiian ppl don't get to treat ppl poorly or complain when its happening everywhere and has happened already.
It's hard to make it in Philadelphia, PA. I've found cheaper homes in Hawaii than I found in Philly. People move from all over, from one place to another. Hawaii is no different. You have to respect people wherever you go. Philly isn't for some, Brooklyn isn't for some, the U.S. Virgin Islands isn't for some...and at the same time many places ARE for many people. At the end of the day, the whole world is surrounded by an ocean. You have to force yourself to make it in Hawaii, if that's what you want to do.

It is hard to live there and there is a lot of injustice towards the 6% that are Native Hawaiians there such as land passed down generations and then getting taken over, which is the reason i will never even though i have had a special love for Hawaii since Kindergarten. The reason for this is because, along with love for Hawaii as land, culture and history, comes love and respect for Native Hawaiians and i wish them all the luck for them to get their culture, lands and independency back. I'm not saying that other races shouldn't be allowed to live in Hawaii, but that other races should try taking over and ruining the culture and atmostphere. What land isn't stolen? Things change hands, always have. I'd say count your blessing it wasn't the Chinese that did it. Or the Japanese prior to WWII. Somebody was going to do it. Be happy it was missionaries who did actually love the Hawaiian people and want to save souls, whether one believes in that or not. Of course, after that, business moved in and they can be a ruthless bunch. No argument from me there. So I see the point for sure. I just maybe come at it from a more global and historical perspective. American culture is pretty good, as is native Hawaiian culture. I think they are both awesome and respect should go both ways.

Robert Yos if by Korea you mean South Korea, and somebody was going to take us over no matter what, and the choice was Korea or communist china or The lunatic Imperial Japanese- yes. I would appreciate the fact that I was not a communist, and the fact that the Koreans are a fairly modern society and 10 times better than the alternative. The point I was making was somebody was going to colonize Hawaii, that's human nature there's nothing anybody can do about it. It was just a matter of whom. So I am saying, luckily it was America. So that being said, I totally understand how people who live in Hawaii, and have for a long time maybe all their life, don't appreciate cocky mainlanders Who think because they have a few bucks they are better than everybody. I think if Hawaiians just remember aloha, the cool people that come over will get with the program or go home. And the tourists will continue to keep the economy going if they have a good experience with the people, not just the beautiful natural environment.

Aloha, When I first saw your post, I thought that it was just another rant. I was wrong. What you say here has value and resonance. The islands are a special and unique place. Special people are drawn to Hawai"i. I am considering moving to the islands, and I am spending a fair amount of time researching my move. By way of background, my grandfather (father's father) lived in on the Big Island (Paradise Park) many years ago (1960s to his death in 1984). My father and I traveled to Hilo to attend to his affairs in 1984 and I have never felt the same way about a place since. Many things have intervened in my life since those days (school, profession, wife, kids, college for them...the usual), but I have never forgotten how my father and I spent that time together, and how we committed my grandfather's ashes to the magnificent Pacific waves after his services. As an African-American man, I am no stranger to the notion of "stolen" land or labor, and I am more than sympathetic regarding grievances related to American injustice meted out to "perceived lessors." In any event, I just wanted you to know that your words and ideas expressed were well-taken and had meaning.

I have eaten amazing tasty simple real foods with local families. Some times there were locals that were negative closed minded and aggressive.
