This resonates with me. Ive had esophoria/esotropia since childhood. Consistent use of prism glasses ALWAYS made my double vision exponentionally worse when the glasses came off. Your eye just gets lazier and lazier. Im 32 and I can no longer fuse targets more the 2 ft from my face. Pretty awful condition to live with :/

I have been wearing the Neuro Lens for about a year now. I don't wear them every day, only when I'm tired or when a lot of reading is required. The great thing is they have different strength prisms for distance and close up work in one lens. My eyes actually improved over time and I need lower prisms. I do have to say that Vision Therapy does help, I've done that in the past, but it didn't take away all my eye strain.

Here is something else also about the Double Vision. Doctors prescribe prisms to align the eyes and typically prisms does not fix the alignment. If the double vision goes away, it likely means that the brain is suppressing one eye in order to create a single image. This is often how the double vision is dealt with by the brain when there is an alignment issue.

Last week (8/24/21) my eye specialist scheduled Strabismus surgery for 12/10/21 to correct my Diplopia. After watching all of Dr. Julie videos on Diplopia and Strabismus, I am going to cancel the surgery. I am not interested in going down the Strabismus surgery rabbit hole. I have had progressive double vision get worse over the course of 7-8 years, stress & age may have something to do with this also. No eye doctor has treated me for this & it’s been a process to rule out other health conditions & finding the right specialist. A double vision specialist I seen 4 years ago said he’s never heard of eye turns suddenly happening that you are usually born with it. I found BVD through my own research online & knowing all my symptoms that doctors aren’t connecting the dots with or bothering much to look into more.

The thing is that these are supposed to be temporary. They are just a help for the lazy eye to see normally. Also a set of exercises is prescribed. And then after the situation gets better because of training a different set of prisms is prescribed. And that until eyes start seeing normally and no prisms are needed. In any case that is still better than having an operation that is in most cases purely cosmetic and fixes nothing but also can make things worse.

Thanks for commenting! Glad it seems to be working for you! But here’s the thing: Prism adaptation can be a pain at the end of the day. When it gets worse the individual typically has to do either surgery or vt. They almost have no option left. Why you may ask? Because typically people who require prisms usually have newly developing eye turns. The eye turn as it is freshly starting requires the prism to align images to relieve strain or stop double vision. Then once it’s treated initially it relaxes into more and requires stronger….and stronger….. and STRONGER over time. Hope this doesn’t happen to you. But it’s the general pattern to watch for. That’s why some things that may seem okay in the short term can be landmines later. Thanks for being here and sharing!

I came across a video about neurolens but didn't really understand how they were supposed to be different and also wondered if they were just hyping something to make money. I guess I really don't know much about eye health. I know I have astigmatism and nearsightedness but just got switched into bifocals the last so many years. I don't really like them. I get frustrated when the angle is off and I cannot twist my head to see right. I don't even wear my glasses with as close as I sit to the computer because I would find the head tilting action annoying in the least. Today I was looking at videos about the eye. What are your thoughts on pinhole glasses for vision correction?

Thank you for the clarification. I’ve been struggling with dizziness and just feeling off especially when driving and walking and grocery stores since sept 2021. I’ve been saying there’s something up with my eyes. Regular exams came back normal. Went to a physiotherapist and he said it’s vestibule ocular reflex dysfunction. I was doing gaze exercises and slowly got better then Got Covid and it all came back full swing. I just saw a neuro optometrist and she has completely validated all the stuf I’ve been going through. Set me up with some visual therapy which starts next week. I asked her about prism lenses and she said we do therapy first and don’t usually prescribe lenses. Which caught me off guard because all of the reading I did in regards to vertical heterophoria said prism lenses. So I was second guessing visual therapy but now that I watched your video and read some of the comments here I’m glad visual therapy is an option.

I already had surgery twice. Once in the 90's, and once in 2021, unfortunately the second surgery did not stick nearly as long and that doctor no longer accepts my insurance so I had to see someone else who decided to try prisms instead of a 3rd surgery to see how they would work for me. As I am on Idaho Medicaid, I don't think we have adult vision therapy here, and even if we did, there is no way Medicaid would even pay for it when they only pay for vision if you have certain conditions such as in the realm of diabetes, strabismus (like myself), etc. The frames the even pay for are so terrible that they literally fall apart and I opted to pay $50 for a pair of glasses online instead to save myself the hassle. Vision therapy would not be something I could afford just for my extremely terrible eyesight that I've had issues with since I was 5 to come back later as I am disabled.

Age 64. My ex-husband mentioned long ago that I cover my right eye when reading. I don't know when this started. I had scoliosis as a child that was corrected considerably, but still have a forward head posture that they were unable to correct. I have chronic right shoulder and neck pain, as well as jaw pain on the right side. I think the neck pain began after a car accident in my late twenties or early thirties. I have always struggled with reading because I lose my place constantly. As I've gotten older I have had to switch to audiobooks because reading is exhausting. I mentioned covering my right eye to my eye doctor and that it was much worse than the left. He used a light with a line in it and discovered that either my head is tilted or my eyes aren't aligned. Hi Dr. Julie. Thanks so much for your video. Without glasses, I do not see double vision however I do have constant eye strain. While wearing glasses (no prism) I start to see vertical double vision towards to the center and top half of the lens. If I lift up the glasses so my eyes are centered at the bottom half of the lens, the images fuse together nicely and the strain is gone. Why is the double vision apparent only while wearing my glasses? The glasses have been rechecked multiple times to make sure they're made correctly. Also, would the pencil pushups help in for vertical misalignment?
@visontherapy
@visontherapy 3 ай бұрын
Well likely because the images are too blurry to notice double without glasses (which assumes you have power in them to see better). Pencil pushups will not correct or improve a vertical misalignment but can actually make it a bit worse. Training convergence or crossing eyes can signal muscles that also work on vertical placement of the eyes and can overstimulate a vertical misalignment.

I don't know if you still see comments on this video, but about 10 years ago, i noticed double vision that got worse the farther I looked to my right without moving my head. No problems looking straight ahead or to my left. I was told to wear prism glasses. A month ago, I had prk surgery and i just have double vision everywhere now. I'm hoping it goes away after my eye heals but I notice that i get a huge jump of it when i look to the right while keeping my head pointed forward. My question is what kind of doctor do I look for to help with the double vision? Again, I'm hoping the PRK enduced double vision clears, but I'd still like to seek help with my pre-existing double vision. My eye doctor always told me there was no way to correct it other than the prism glasses. Do I just seek a different eye doctor for a 2nd opinion or is this a specialist area?

I have thyroid eye disease and my eyes just got crazy last week. I now have double vision. So I had no choice but to get prism (sticker) placed on glasses that do not have any prescription. So the lenses are basically clear lenses with a prism sticker over the right lens. The temporary prism sticker was placed on glasses while I am being treated for the thyroid eye disease and while taking the new TEPEZZA drug. So what do you suggest?

We do not prescribe prisms for long-term use. We do not even prescribe them as glasses but instead use a handheld prism on a stick for specific exercises and protocols for those who may need it very briefly. We are solely focused on improving vision long term and generally avoid the use of Band-Aid approaches.

I have alternating Exotropia or something similar to Exotropia and I have 20/20 vision. Should I be worried about my prism glasses? I've been wearing them for about a year or two but nothing seems out of ordinary? I'd also like to add that I don't have double vision or anything like that, the way that my doctor described it to me is that it used light to help my eye stay in place because if I lose thought or de-concentrate my eye ends up being cross eyed

Interesting. My prism is 4.00 out for both sides, which when applied for the first time back in 2020, allowed me to drive with new glasses, without having to keep one eye shut. The problem for me, is that neither my healthcare provider, Kaiser, nor America's Best vision care, would fill a wrap-type frame with my prism requirement. They say it can't be done. Because I cycle, I need a wrap type frame for wind protection. Anyways, I have an appointment this month, and I'm going to take in a new Oakley OX 8027 Crosslink frame. Hi, what do you think about prism glasses for homonymous Hemianopia?
@visontherapy
@visontherapy 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question Marsha, I used to prescribe those for patients. But what I found out is that it merely shifts the persons visual field to the side. What can happen is that it can throw off their sense of space and make them uncertain where things are at. Probably about 90% of the time most individuals won’t find them to be that beneficial. However, a few will. Hope this helps!

I cant focus enough to get one image unless im close up to within like 10 feet or so. I recently got glasses with a prism but i have to go back and have them increase the prism because im still seeing double. I recently been looking into getting contact with a prism. Went to the Dr to make sure i want diabetic or anything and my results were fine minus higher than normal blood pressure but not bad enough to need medication or anything

I’ve had a prism lens for 5 days and it has given me back my freedom and capacity to function. I have a paralyzed 4th nerve (palsy). Thus my doctors cannot train a muscle to work when the nerve no longer fires. So do you still claim that a prism lens is a bad idea and I should return to being unable to drive, read, work, etc?
@visontherapy
@visontherapy 10 ай бұрын
Hi there. It appears you miss the point being made about how and why prisms are used and why it is often counterproductive in the long run if the goal is better vision and not just a crutch. Now, if you want a quick and temporary fix then you are on the right track. Also, the assertion about 4th nerve palsy is not accurate considering we work with and have help many align their eyes. The fact is the recommendation made is based on what they know and so is the solution presented which is akin to recommending crutches or a wheelchair when the individual can indeed be trained to walk. Ultimately, it still doesn't change the reality about long-term prism use especially since you are only 5 days in. But we are happy for your relief and wish you the best! Good luck.
@vanessatorres2517
@vanessatorres2517 3 ай бұрын
Not a bad idea at all, while the nerves arent firing well yet , you need an aid to be able to function and work and earn a living to pay bills everyday or even pay the doctor . . While in the process of healing , prism is or an aid is definitely needed to be able to function . To treat paralysis / paresis therapy is . Stroke patients need a crutch to assist to walk while undergoing rehab /therapy . I think dr julie should consider crutches are still beneficial for daily functionality and healing . Imnobility hampers the healing process.

I went my entire life not knowing double vision wasn't normal. But I've also had headaches 8 days out of 10 for the past 20 years and would randomly go blind for up to an hour from ocular migraines quite often. At 29 (last year) I went to an optometrist on a whim because I got vision insurance for the first time and was surprised when they told me my double vision wasn't normal, and may be the cause of my headaches. My optometrist said my eye misalignment was by far the most severe case he had ever seen in his career. I was prescribed neurolens glasses and haven't had any instances of blindness nor have I had more than 6 headaches in the 12 months since wearing them. My concern about your advice in this video is that "training my eyes to align themselves" is essentially what my eyes were doing for the past 29 years, with chronic headaches and bouts of blindness as a result. How would vision therapy be different and result in reduced eye strain?
@visontherapy
@visontherapy 4 ай бұрын
Glad you are finding some kind of relief after that long. But your eyes weren’t being trained. They ran wild for 20 years. Driving a car that’s out of alignment for years will not fix it. In fact only makes it worse for car and driver. Hence vision therapy is not the same as your prev experience. Bottom line is we help the eyes function properly without crutches 🩼(Which is what the prisms are). This therefore eliminates the issues that tend to come with prisms over time. But I’m glad you are better than before!

@visontherapy
@visontherapy 6 ай бұрын
Ultimately the choice is yours, but my position is that neither is the best choice in correcting your eyesight. Each path has significant limitations and drawbacks. the first is that surgery is well...surgery. but more than that the surgery is more about cosmetic alignment than improving your vision. We also see many patients who have had 2,3,4 or more surgeries who still end up coming to us. I have also made many videos about prisms including this one that shows its limitations and long-term effects. This is why I choose to pivot my practice to help patients resolve and improve their vision in a way that is more effective and makes either option unnecessary. Kinda sounds like a vision therapy pitch right? But it is what it is. Ultimately you want to ask yourself what do I want for my vision? Thick glasses that will tend to increase, surgery that may not do what I need it to, or actually get better vision without either option? The choice is yours. Thanks for being here.

It is important to follow the advice of your doc unless you determine it isn’t helping. So while it is not the approach I would have taken if it works for you then your objective has been met at least temporarily. Typically longer term use is more likely to be an issue than short term. If next time they wish to increase the prism then you know something has changed.

My eyes felt like they were crossing. One day while driving, out of nowhere, I started seein dbl vision. I'll be 55 in a few days, I'm sleep deprived and exhausted, but a gal's gotta eat, so I do work. Even with brand new progressive perscription including BI I still see dbl. After 3 mins online, I found a video that spoke of BINOCULAR DIPLOPIA, which described me to a T. Yes, things that make you go hmmmm, indeed. I've suffered from dry eye, sleep deprivation, poor diet since all I do is work & sleep, so I'm wearing my horizontal prism for a week, trying to get more sleep, using an eye drop and hope this improves my vision 'til I can get Lasik (maybe).

I have an autoimmune eye disease that causes fibrotic scarring of the eye muscles (among other things). Vision therapy helped but only to a point. Prisms allow me to have functional eyesight. I think everyone needs to explore vision therapy as a part of resolving or improving double vision-but don’t dismiss or avoid using prisms if needed.

My doc told me that vision therapy won’t help me and would make things worse. I was diagnosed with vertical heterophoria. I forget the reason why. I keep asking for a copy of my records but I’ve yet to receive them. I remember them saying that I have a vertical and horizontal misalignment. Any thoughts? I’m currently wearing prisms. They help, but I find myself wanting to take them off throughout the day.
@visontherapy

Hi Lauren. It is no surprise they would day that. First off because thats what they were taught in school and secondly because some docs arent open minded to expand their perspective once they graduate and get set in their ways. Yet the facts say differently and as a result we get a lot of patients reporting that their doc is quite surprised at their improvement. Here is one of many such examples copied from our website: After my stroke and loss of peripheral vision, and In spite of my ophthalmologist’s statement that “ It was impossible to regain any sight” my partner convinced me to try the Vision for Life program. After several months, I noticed while walking in the streets that vision seemed “MUCH WIDER” This was a great encouragement in a vision training which I at times felt was not moving forward. This wonderful discovery gave us new encouragement. Two months later, April 2023 the same ophthalmologist who, after executing vision measurements the previous year stated “ I am surprised to observe that your peripheral vision is CONSIDERABLY wider” I told him about your program which he one year ago thought was just a waste of time and money. He encouraged me to continue. A new date for verifications next year is agreed. In the meantime, me and my dear and helpful partner will continue with renewed energy. In the 3 weeks since the last measurements it feels that it has opened up further. We now look forward to each Tursday`s Zoom session with Jill. I am very pleased to recommend this program for anyone in a similar situation. In the world with new “digital meeting places”, Zoom etc, it works quite well to receive follow up and instructions remotely. What I in the beginning turned to out of desperation and not out of belief, actually delivers! With renewed energy, we are now continuing on the journey back to a completely restored vision which I look forward to proving that to the initially skeptical doctors, I would like to recommend Vision for Life for anyone with similar problems. - AR As far as prisms and Vertical H goes, it really isn't fixing your field of vision but instead shifting viable vision over and yes many patients report not liking due to discomfort and often cos they end up bumping into things since it is only robing peter to pay Paul so to speak. You are welcome schedule an online consultation to discuss your case specifics further and what’s possible for you, because Ultimately it’s up to you to decide about your health in-spite of the opinion of skeptics. Thanks for being here!

My non dominant eye is now feeling strange, but headaches and jaw pain are much less. My doc now thinks that I either need a different prescription or there’s an underlying issue. I’ve always had amblyopia. Patch as a kid, etc, but never had issues with driving and dizziness until after I had Covid in 2020! I will look into all of this. Here's what they have in my notes. Exotropia, Vertical strabismus of right eye, and Diplopia. I believe my first surgery was in 2006. I had three surgeries since. The last one being in 2016. I remember having a plastic prism on my glasses that already had prisms already in the glasses. I remember when the lady who operating on me for my last surgery asked if I wanted to be far or near sided. Was very interesting that I had to make a decision on that. I knew I had time to think about it. I can't remember what I chose. I do want to say one thing which in your video makes sense. When all of this started to happen, the difference between wearing my glasses and not wearing them are so much more worse now. I've been so used to seeing what I can using prism lenses. It really hasn't effected me though. I do know it truly is a lot more difficult to see without my glasses than before. I had my procedures done in Madison, Wisconsin. Thanks for the information.

Interesting how doctors make whatever happened "your fault." I had unnecessary cataract surgery in one eye (I really had a macular pucker). Whatever lens the ophthalmologist chose causes the image I see with that eye to be more than double in size compared to the image I see with the other eye. I have had double vision since the surgery 3 years ago, because the eye that had the cataract surgery drifts outward. The doctor's response was I could wear an eye patch and she wouldn't pull my driver's license, since I can see with one eye.

But I've seen a different opthamologist and he said he could inject Botox into my dominant eye and that would help me not to see double, or go ahead with surgery and try that out. I'm going for a third opinion the end of May. Maybe Botox could also help you, but definitely see a different opthamologist. I hope you can find some help. And look into malpractice lawsuits.
