When I was in middle school, one of my friends auditioned for the voice kids, and she was a great singer, so I was like oh my God my friend is going to make it to the finals! When I saw her audition on tv her voice was terrible! She sounded so much worse than what she actually sang like, she later told me that they made her sing the same song 5 times, and by the fifth time her voice didn't sound as great as the first, so they used that take, and later she found out that they wanted to keep the cast as young as they could, for "cuteness" and used her as filler, since she was like 13-14.

When I tried out for american idol, I didn’t realize there was like 7 rounds of tryouts before you’re even considered. They also asked me if I had a story to tell viewers once I started passing rounds. I was like, “I really really like music, why do I have to be broken and fucked up while I do? Doesn’t that just warrant unnecessary empathy from my audience?” I sang an original song and the judge (not the celebrities just some random) said to come back when I was ready to be “on the next level”. That fucked me up for like 6 years. DONT let this happen to you, NOBODY is ever in a position to say you aren’t perfect just as you are. NEVER give up if the stage is what you dream about.

These shows are so fake. I went to a life taping of Americas got talent and it really opened my eyes to what was actually going on. Very little of the show was candid. Us as the audience were encouraged heavily by the producers to shout as loud as possible in hopes of "being seen on tv" if we shout the loudest. Retakes, fake standing ovations, and laugh tracks were also recorded with the audience and judges. We were even old ahead of time before a performance that if the next act would end badly and wouldn't be appropriate for kids. They KNEW the guy would be voted off and would start cussing out the judges, and they basically told us all it was fake. Made me really lose that love for talent shows I once had.

When I tried out for American Idol I was in a huge gym and when it came time to audition, I started to sing and I was in a line of people singing totally different songs infront of other "producers "at the same time. They also wanted a story and made you write it out *rolls eyes* . The "producer was on his phone when I began to sing. When I didn't pass they cut off your wrist band infront of everyone. But it doesn't end there. Around the corner leading to the parking lot were camera men. I told my friend to not give a reaction but cried when we got to the car out of sight. Terrible experience! These shows are horror places....
@johntousseau93805 жыл бұрын
Audience reactions are filmed separately too, and then they are cut together in post. Also the "judges" don't know shit about music. They'll critique your performance, or they'll say some shit like "some of your notes were flat." But they won't say, "you missed the F sharp, hitting an F natural instead," or "your cover of this song in mixolydian gives it a more rock feel." They are not musicians, they are corporate execs, and that's my biggest issue with these talent shows for singers and song writers. Oh and almost every contestant on those shows isn't some rando who walked in off the street. Most of them have had years of training to sing the way they do. To clarify, I'm not saying you need to be super versed in music theory to be a good musician, in fact most of the greatest rock musicians weren't, but sit there and judge other singers as the "expert" or music industry gatekeeper... yeah you kinda look like shit if you don't know anything about music.

They cut out pretty much everything Louis did and they even got him to lip-sync at the judges house, but when he came back to perform after his mum passed and when he was a judge and every other time he's been on the show solo, Simon's always like 'I knew you'd be rlly successful blah blah blah' which srsly triggers me when it was Syco and Modest who pushed Louis to the back for so long and gave him next to nothing when he wrote pretty much EVERYTHING that 1D put out

Roomie has a point. When he said, "It's for entertainment, lies don't matter if it's just to entertain," and then countered it with, "Well, if everything is fake, including the talent, how is it entertaining?" I 100% agreed. Personally, I don't watch many reality or live TV shows, because I know most of it, even though it says real and live, is bullshit. Especially a talent show; if the talent is fake, if the reactions are fake, if the emotion is fake, and you know you're being manipulated... it just simply *isn't entertaining.*
@natashasmith97484 жыл бұрын
@Vyrex420 you make a great point as well, but remember: Hollywood's job is to make fake movies, but they want us to get so immersed into the story that we forget it isn't real, and get scared, or happy, or sad, etc. Even though we know it's fake, we still get scared if it's a good movie. Live shows and reality shows, however, claim to be "live" and "real," and when you're watching a live talent show, you expect it to be real and authentic, right? You don't expect to be manipulated and lied to. Movies are a different story: you're EXPECTING it to be fake.

This is all true, I've been on 2011 Belgian Idols and everything had to be staged and they even told me what song I have to perform on the camera. Everything felt so fake and unreal. The real auditions were just small groups of people coming in like a job interview which they made it look like a grand audition on tv. The finalist were already pre selected singers who were all people from the music academy or school teachers etc... that they have called over the phone, They made us act the whole time. It had opened my eyes what is going on behind the scenes and it made me feel like a piece of meat for them to make money off. I dropped out asap cuz it's not what I was looking for or what I stand for and I even told them my thoughts, They couldn't handle it so they muted all my clips they filmed and put me on the bad singers walls before it went streaming on tv to embarres me. The things these shows would do to entertain others to get money. There are no morals there. I'm so happy I didn't continue.

Back in the mid 90's a friend of mine was on the short list for one of the Real World seasons (I don't know which one) - and he was really excited until, during one of the interviews one of the production staff asked him about something personal that happened in his life that he doesn't talk about (he didn't give me details either and he still doesn't know how they found out). He told them to go F themselves and quit. He was really upset and explained to us that the producers do not care, at all, about the people they exploit. I'm sure some folks have had positive experiences with these types of shows and they aren't all created equal but money is the bottom line and if tears and trauma sell that's what they'll create.

A friend of mine tried out for the Danish version of X-Factor. What she told me was horrible. They had (as you probably know) pre-auditions, where they sort out people. You'd think the good ones only get through, but apparently not according to all those horrible auditions. They also told asked her to name a few songs, that really means a lot to her. The producers backed her up with her choice of a slow song, that means a lot to her. But when she sang in front of the judges, they told her at she has a very good voice, and it just was an abysmal choice. They didn't give her a second chance, and when it was air'd on the tellie, they edited it so she looked like a moron. They were insulting her, after she left, and never showed the good responses from the judges. This leads me to actually believe that Zoe Alexander's comment that 'You told me to sing a Pink song' actually is true, but the judges lied on camera. That does not excuse her behavior though.

I know it's a little late but I'm going to tell my story from a shitty show I was in about 4(?) years ago. I think I was 14 years old. It was a talent show. Let me try to give a fairly short version of it. We arrive at 8 am in a big warehouse where everything is set up. I'm in a band and we were 3, the youngest (drummer) at the time was only 11 years old. He was kinda our selling point because of his skills on the drums at such a young age. They reached out to us first. We made a song just for their show, the right length and everything. First thing that happens is nothing. Nothing for about 3 hours. After those 3 hours of nothing, there is a breakfast for everyone who is auditioning. Pretty good. The next 9 hours of the day is more than 99% waiting. We are waiting in the back room while people are having B roll taken off them (also all super scripted like Roomie said in his video) and such (of us also). Finally on the 7th hour of those 9 waiting, we get to go and perform our song. We are a whole band so setting up took us around 20 minutes maybe, because of the drums and soundcheck. Everything fine there, the judges just take a small break. Now to the performance. It went as good as you could imagine. Sound was good, we were confident and all of the judges gave all 100% absolute yes and they hoped we win the whole contest. They adored and loved us, especially the drummer who was so talented and so young. We walk out with a happy face and wait for 2 more hours (you can't go home until they say so). Now after that day, we were feeling pretty positive and feeling like we have a good chance of winning. Fast forward a few more weeks and we get a call from a producer. They say that we need to come to some place where they were going to do some more B roll of us and the other contestants. That's fine or so we thought. We come to the place. More waiting. Hours of waiting. We do some group shots where we stand in the background of other shots and whatever. Then they tell everyone that they are going to meet with the judges again. We got a little confused and wait for a few hours. People go into the room and look pretty sad when they come out again but don't say anything. We go in. Big as room with nothing but the judges in there. The judges tell us that we can't compete anymore. I ask why. They can't tell us but they look super sad because they genuinely liked our performance. I got very suspicious. We walk out, sad, with 5 bottles of soda each that was free to take from there. Fast forward a year or two. I'm moving up in the ranks of Icelandic musicians because of our album release. I meet one of the judges in a music store (Everybody knows each other in Iceland) and he says hello because he recognised me (we did quite a lot of advertising) from the new album and from the show. I asked him what was up with the show thing. now here is the fun part: He said to me (whispering because he can't really talk badly about the show): "We had to drop you off because the producers though it was too much work to have you bring a whole band to the stage and setting everything up before you perform for a minute and a half". I left out a lot of juicy like making the crowd act a certain way and having to do retakes of reactions a lot. I hate scripted reality shows. TL;DR: Went on a talent show with my band, everybody loved us a lot, we get called to a "B-roll" take event thing where we meet the judges, the judges tell us that we can't continue in the contest, I meet on e of the judges later and he knew me because my album release. He tells me that the producers didn't want to go through the hassle of setting up the drumkit and soundchecking so he told the judges to drop us out.

But I would like to mention that one acapella group. That as impressive whereas all the other millions of normal singers, I'm not impressed. I feel like my time has been wasted by watching it. I dont really know anymore Oh and one more thing, why does it seem that every singing contestant have some sort of crazy sob story, it's always something like "my dad died of cancer" or something repetitive, why is it always cancer? (But I gotta say that there are sob stories that are true, it just seems like most of them are made up because they most likely are, as stated in the contract.) It's also quite notable that when they have those "shoulder phrases" (when they're crying and say something into their shoulder) and record it from like 15 feet away.... you'd need a personal mic to ACTUALLY pick that up so clearly...

The example in this video is definitely recorded in a booth and played over top of the emotional scene.

I..... honestly never knew this... Thank you for bringing this to light. I have always loved shows like American Idol and such. It's absolutely insane to hear that this is what they do, and you have legitimate proof of it. I'm blown away.

If you haven't seen the video of Zoey Alexander exposing the X Factor yet: it's a must watch. They ruined her life and the lives of other people with hopes and dreams. And she has all the evidence and X Factor immediately tried to hide everything after she released her video!

I was approached to go straight to the judges on AGT & the new season of Idol (they seem to be getting most of their contestants form social media these days) and said no to both. I don't have a sob story, I didn't just come back from Iraq, I don't have cancer or a sick kid, etc. so I really have nothing to offer but my voice, which is all you should *need* to be in a *singing/performance* show. Unfortunately, these programs aren't interested in finding singers or recording artists who can turn their quick fame into long careers. There are thousands of finalists from these shows and I can only think of a handful that have had actual success as commercial artists, mostly early on from Idol. So I agree Roomie! They're basically full of 💩💩

The shows have become so boring right? I liked to watch Idol in the beginning because it was more about the artistry and music, now it's just about who has the worst story lol.

I've also heard these shows make you sign the rights away to anything you produce or have produced. I.e Say you make money off a KZbin performance that you created 3 years before or 3 years after going on the show, they would then own that content and get all the monies.

My friend went to our countrie´s version of "idol". He wanted to sing "what does the fox say". Yeah, not a great pick for sure. But what they did, oh my god... They took all of the funny screamy squeeky parts and edited it to look like he did nothing but this. And after that they told him to say that he studies computer programming and robotics at one of our most prestige university. Long story short, everyone watching it thought that my friend is completely crazy. But you know, nobody watches the show anymore, so it doesn´t matter.

That's actually true. Niki and Gabi uploaded a story time about going to American Got Talent, they basically said that in the audition uploaded, Simon dissed them but in real life, Simon actually complimented them. Fabricated.
