Hmm, when I was in the industry not long ago, I definitely preferred Stihl over the other options available. Mind you, I was only an operator and didn't have to foot the cost, but ours seemed to hold up well. We did most of our own me maintenance and were able to get parts pretty easily from local hardware stores. We also just used whatever oil we happened to have a jug of. I always preferred the feel of them compared to other brands, they felt less chintzy and better balanced. We had mostly redmax blowers, they worked well, but were much less comfortable to wear for long periods, especially since you can add the waist strap to Stihls.

I like my Stihl Pro Level Chainsaws. They were made in the mid 1980's. I mix up whatever Oil I have on hand for them, somewhere between 40:1 and 50:1, use whatever bar oil is least expensive, and whatever air filters I can find on Ebay since they quit making them. They are a bit heavier than the modern options - but they cut and are as dependable as the day is long. The new flavors are about 400% more than I paid for something that is supposed to be similar performance, but they won't even hold a candle to dependability/ durability. If I happen to have a tree fall on one tonight, I'll buy another used saw.

The older ones are solid but the new ones are just overly expensive cheap machines

And Husqvarna isn't expensive when everything screws into plastic... 🙄 I'll stick with my Stihl's because they're ultimately made better.

Interesting. I've used Stihl equipment for decades without any major issues. But then again I take very good care of my investments.

Stihl costs 1.5x the cost of alternatives, for 90% of the capability.

Well, they can be part of the fleet that includes Toro's Downtime Master wide lawn mower.

@@WJCTechyman even though I live in the state where toro is made, I don’t like them and will never buy a toro. I own a few Stihl products. My favorite of which is a backpack leaf blower. I will never own toro though. I owned an exmark zero turn and that was ok. Replaced it with a gravely 60 inch pro turn mower now that’s been great. My saws are all Husqvarna (592, 390, 555, 540t), which is a superior brand for less money.

I prefer the Japanese stuff over the EuroStuff. Stihl isn't the only offender for expensive parts, Husqvarna is as well. I've been burned too often by the shotty workmanship of Husqvarna equipment and parts so it's a no go for me. Since RedMax is a Husqvarna company, same problem. EuroVacuum cleaners and cars have the same kind of mix of expensive, proprietary stuff that isn't worth the price yet people love their Mieles and Sebos but again, overpriced proprietary stuff that doesn't hold a candle to Numatic or Rexair's Rainbow. I would buy a Honda or a Toyota over most car companies these days, especially VolksWagon group. The Germans used to understand the principle of Occam's Razor, but not anymore. Stihl machines always looked...cheap to me compared to the utilitarian look of the Echo or Honda stuff. The fuel tanks use a weird bayonet cap instead of a standard thread on and they're two piece like the old Briggs Quantum engine tanks which leads to problems especially compared to the roto-molded design that everyone else including Honda and Echo uses.

Just got a fs56rc and love it but am pretty mystified and irritated they removed the grease fitting. Just a sign of doevil since these things need to be greased.

@@PNWSmallEngineandLawn Well, Echo's an offender in this regard too. That said, if you split the gearbox, you can at least give it a total cleaning.
