Why You Spend Time On Things You Don't Care About

How do you know what matters? If someone said what are your about? What are your values? Would be be able to tell them? You probably wouldn’t if you hadn’t already thought about this. It’s not because you don’t have any values. There are things that matter to you. But If you’re like many people, they are not top of mind.
When you haven’t clarified them in your head, it’s easy to spend your time buried in tasks and responsibilities that you don’t really care about. You can unintentionally do a poor job of things because your heart really isn’t in it. Also, when you aren’t anchored by your values, you’re more vulnerable to worry about other people’s opinions and expectations of you. So knowing your values helps you care less about other’s values and opinions. The goal isn’t to be indifferent to other people’s opinions, it’s to have their opinions mean less.
Here are ten common domains that people value.
Family relationships
Marriage/romantic relationships
Parenting
Friendships/social life
Career/work
Education/personal growth
Recreation/Leisure
Spirituality
Community/citizenship
Health

@@jemiahjackson2508 Sorry if you thought that I was accusing you of anything far from it. I grew up in a depressed inner city neighborhood and sometimes or a lot of times if a person does something to better themselves or start breaking away from one’s group, the group can start saying negative things. I watched an E channel story on Mary J. Blige where she described that very thing. Also, it’s hard to break away from the familiar or it seems hard for some and sometimes you don’t notice stuff around you until you step away from it.

Nothing is truly meaningful, and so anything is as meaningful as it’s meaningful to you. Your work can be not fulfilling but meaningful because it gives you means to do other things that do contribute to your meaningful values, e.g. gives you money to travel, or allows you to support your family whom you love and don’t want to see struggle.

This is overwhelming as I don't have the answers to 90% of those questions. I'm 30. I should put these questions in writing and answer them.

Lately I've been watching a lot of your videos because I was diagnosed Bipolar type 1. Then I just kept on watching because you offer very good advice. Hearing you at the end of the video get personal about your experience warmed my heart. I'm just so glad you kept doing your videos and helping so much people. But also I just feel very happy for you getting there.

Thank you! I truly needed to hear this today. I have a lot of soul searching to do. I often seek validation from a friendship of over thirty years. It is starting to concern me, as when making a decision instead of trusting my own reactions, judgment or response, in certain scenarios in my life I first think what my friend would say and do. I fear making matters worse. I hate conflict. When I stand up for myself (even my friend) and not allow others to disrespect me it comes with conflict/reticule. I do everything I can within reason to avoid arguments/ conflict. I care about what people think of me. I know I need work in this area. I suffer from anxiety. I value my friends option more than my own. It has gotten so bad to the point where I feel as though my friend has stopped giving me opinions and advice so that I can trust myself, my judgment and live with it. I believe that it's a good thing. However, in doing so, when I share what I did and said in certain scenarios, at times it result in a non response, gets ignored, the subject changes and unanswered phone calls. It makes me feel some kind of way. (As if I need some kind of affirmation or validation) I don't like how vulnerable that makes me feel. I value our friendship. Over the years, my friend has helped me understand how to handle negative people, given me support advice, and has been there for me. I have peace of mind, when I don't have to deal with people on certain levels. I am at a loss as to what I should do in effort to maintain some type type of healthy friendship it should be at this point in my life, as I heal, become more secure and grow stronger. emotionally. Your advice Dr. Marks would mean so much. Thank again!🌷

I am so thankful you decided to return. Your videos have given me so much to think about and consider. I have been spending a lot of time working on my writing because it matters to me. I love writing, and for many many years, I allowed other people's opinions and my negative talk to prevent me from doing what matter to me. I really appreciate your work, and thank you.

Your videos on here are the absolute best by far!!! In just a handful of videos I’ve watched for the first time today (and some I’ve watched four times in a row) you have changed my life for the better. Thank God you didn’t give up! And you know what? That in and of itself is encouraging as well. God bless you ❤️

Your videos help me understand a part of myself I did not get a chance to properly comprehend until recently...and I am 31 so there's a lot of work! My therapist is fantastic, but paired with these videos, I feel my quality of life is already improving. These are gifts. I appreciate you, Dr. Tracy!

We are blessed to have you, Dr. Tracey Marks. Thank you for being there and deciding to continue KZbin. There are very few doctors who are able to empathically explain conditions the same way you do. You empower us with information. You are a soothing balm to us who fear research owing to white-coat syndrome. You know how to share the good whilst putting to light the bad with clarity and care.
