Political news coverage tends to focus on strategy over substance, and that’s making it less likely that the public will agree on big policy ideas when we need them the most.

The Green New Deal is an ambitious proposal that outlines how the U.S. might begin transitioning towards a green economy over the next ten years. It includes steps like upgrading our power grid and renovating our transportation infrastructure. But most people watching news coverage likely don’t know what’s in the Green New Deal. And that’s because political news coverage tends to focus on strategy over substance, fixating on a bill’s political ramifications rather than its ability to solve a problem. That approach to news coverage is known as “tactical framing,” and research shows it makes audiences at home more cynical and less informed about big policy debates. The result is a cycle of partisanship, where solutions to big problems like climate change are judged on their political popularity rather than their merit.
Check out this in-depth look at the substance of the Green New Deal: www.vox.com/energy-and-enviro...

Each party has different general goals and different ways on looking at the problem and to solve them. Each party is a different team. So yeah you can see each side like a sport team but it's more complex then that. Hers an example in America woman can get their tubs tied at age 18 while men can get a visorectome(can't spell but is men getting their nuts snipped) off at age 16. Some democrats will say lower the age for wemon while some republicans will say raise the men to age 18. This is 1 of many issues we are stupidly argue over even tho most don't know the difference. Men can get the visotectome revered while wemon cant.

Great video! Even a year later there’s still no widespread explanation of what the green new deal is, that is not just talked about in a partisan way whether it will pass or not. I think this cycle of partisanship especially on issues that many people broadly agree on substantively like infrastructure updates all started from the Founding Fathers distrust of the public and its ability to understand policy. With low expectations and the tactical framing so prevalent right now, the media drives the partisanship, drives voter disengagement from politic, and gridlocks Congress further.

The Green New Deal During lecture, Ken has repeatedly offered many proposals in order to mitigate global warming but seemed very passionate and certain about specifically one. He suggested that electing legislators that would promote to tackle the rising global climate and overall take action of the Green New Deal’s proposals is one of the most effective ways to fight climate change. Meanwhile watching the video, “Why you still don’t understand the Green New Deal” I was surprised to learn about tactical framing and how it is utilized in the controversy of the Green New Deal in order to completely dismiss the significance of the policy and the ability it has to solve climate change. But rather instead, it focuses on legislators and how it will affect their reputation. I thought to myself how can politicians be so self centered that the fate of our life’s is completely ignored.

However, in this sense, think about how our news frames political debates, races, and elections. Watching the "live results" on election nights is presented very much like a sports game. "This district is historically republican/red, so we can count on that. But this district over here got mixed polling answers, stay tuned to see which way it votes!". The media is just as at fault as the politicians in making our country very very partisan. *How* you tackle the problem is premised on politics. Do you set up a carbon tax? Do you lead massive state & federal investment in new clean energy sources? Which energy sources? Is natural gas an acceptable transition from coal before 0 carbon power (clue: no)? Are you going to build nuclear power (clue: you should)? Which communities are going to get investment first, and how is the taxation organised, carbon tax or otherwise, to facilitate that? These are all political questions, but they are also all practical ones. Practically we need to be doing everything we can as soon as we can, practically we can't afford not to use nuclear power at least in some places because it's a constant (not variable) 0 carbon power source that works wherever you put it, practically major infrastructure projects tend to end up cheaper and get built faster when government managed (see: France building nuclear power back in the day), practically it makes sense to free up money for the poor by not taxing them as much as millionaires and billionaires (especially given that rich people tend to consume more and thus put out more carbon in their daily lives), practically it makes sense to replace coal plants with nuclear or geothermal or hydroelectric plants because that way we get to net 0 faster & without blackouts, practically it makes sense to enter carbon management into business decisions by making it a financial problem to pollute via a carbon tax. Whether these practical stances to make the country go 0 carbon as fast as possible align with your politics is a matter for yourself.

I'm so glad someone came up with this term, I've noticed it for years. It has created a landscape where it is much more important to "win" a political battle than to enact meaningful policy. It's created this dynamic where politicians are rewarded for not compromising in any way on any thing, even when the issue is something that has a strongly supported consensus. Our default position is defensive and confrontational and it has created an environment that is as toxic as a post-nuclear/chemical war apocalyptic wasteland, essentially Fury Road.

you do still have to admit that america isn't that bad of a place to live compared to other countries, especially if you're presumably able to type these sentences from a computer somewhere. that automatically makes your living conditions at least a little more tolerable than an "apocalypse." a politician's entire career is based on their ability to make a case for issues that are on the table. that's a political battle. the green new deal is not an economically feasible proposal to execute. it provides no incentives for businesses to actually transition to clean energy and instead relies on the government to interfere with the country's economy regardless of public interest. it would certainly be better if people were compromising, but the dems are pushing for the deal just as hard as the republicans are pushing against it. not only that, but renewable energy has failed on multiple accounts in the EU. germany, a country that has made impressive progress with their transition, still goes through power shortages and surpluses because solar and wind are unreliable in weather conditions that aren't optimal. nuclear energy creates toxic waste that these countries are still unsure what to do with. the cherry on top is that transitioning to clean energy needs more fossil fuels, more subsidization, more resources, to implement. even after that, clean energy must still have fossil fuels as a backup. some politicians know this. that's why they've rallied together against the green new deal as an idealist proposal that requires the country to go far beyond its economic and governmental limitations. that's why there's no compromise on the GND. if we were to amend it enough to make it feasible, it would just be a whole new resolution.
@jona.scholt4362
@jona.scholt4362 5 жыл бұрын
@@abigaillising9929 The Fury Road apocalypse reference was intentional hyperbole and a reference to the political environment. I'm under no illusion that the GND is, at the end of the day and in this environment especially, nothing more than a fantasy. But what frustrates me is that there is no starting point to tackle climate change in this country because of the de facto Republican stance that there is no man made climate change. Any proposal would be dead on arrival because of that. I'm also not blind to the limitations of renewable energy. The idea of a zero carbon emission energy grid is entirely unrealistic. However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't do what we can to significantly lower those emissions. And it may not be popular but I'd rather have barrels of containable spent nuclear fuel than millions upon millions upon millions of co2 emissions dumped into the atmosphere, non-stop from now til forever. Simply put it is not a simple problem, one which will require several solutions over many decades. And our politics have become so myopic and short sighted that it is probably impossible to deal with this problem. Also, I've never understood the "America is still the best even with _______ (complaint) and you are lucky to be here, you could always move to ______(insert third world country)". So, yes, America is a great place to live in , I feel incredibly fortunate to live here and in this time. We have a very high living standard and robust and resilient constitution that ensures many liberties. That said, I want to live in a country that does not settle and always strives to improve. Sure, I'm grateful. But I don't want to settle for 'being grateful'. I want to use those enshrined liberties to promote change. After all, our government (and constitution) we're never meant to be static, that's why there are amendments. So I fully recognize I took this post from one place to another but I do like to hope that we, with different views on issues, can at least discuss them with out the fall back to ad hominem attacks, even on youtube message boards. I guess I'm a dreamer Abigail, perhaps you are too.

@@jona.scholt4362 It's equally frustrating to see AOC preaching that climate change will cause the world to end in 12 years and have everyone believe her. There are unsubstantiated claims on both sides, not just the Pubs. I agree that there's been no action due to the sheer degree of polarization, but I don't believe that climate change is the right issue to focus on precisely because of that. The US already has clean coal initiatives in place with the CCPI. These and other measures, including switching to natural gas, effectively reduced carbon emissions by more than 42 million tons in 2017, the largest decline in the world. Trump is a blockhead on some issues, but I think he's got a good thing going with coal. If 42 million tons isn't enough to constitute significantly lowering our emissions, I don't know what to tell you. Fracking is still in development, and there are a lot of risks still left to be eradicated. There's no doubt that a zero carbon grid would be ideal, but like you said, we can't get there without at least a few decades. My point is that the feds are already working on helping the climate change situation in the country, but it seems that it's just never enough to people who look at Europe and their transition to zero carbon, even though we're making comparable progress. On the subject of nuclear waste, it lasts for thousands of years and its only use is to be reprocessed into nuclear weapons. Promoting nuclear energy would likely result in the proliferation of nuclear weapons worldwide, especially since a lot of countries, including America's, storage for nuclear waste is dangerously close to filling up. I find it quite concerning that you're okay with having radioactive waste continue to pile up. I've been studying abroad in China for almost 7 months now, and the situation is a lot worse here than in America. The regulations have been eased to allow for more economic growth, which is good, but the air quality has suffered by comparison, among many other things. I can vouch for the fact that the climate change issue in America is at a real advantage. I don't hate dreams. Dreams are what America was founded on, they were what changed it for the better, and they are what allow us to continue to serve the country. However, I prefer to look at what's in front of me rather than what's above.

This video is about the way in which the media focuses on the political spectacle of a certain topic as opposed to the content of that topic, discussing not the merit of the proposal, but on superficial associations to the proposal, i.e. that it’s socialist, how other politicians feel about it, etc. The Green New Deal serves as an example of this phenomenon, used as a way to discuss how potentially good proposals are obfuscated by this line of discussion. The task for Vox, then, isn’t to explain why the Green New Deal is a good proposal, rather it is to explain how confusion has been created by the media’s refusal to discuss the content of the idea itself. The takeaway from the video isn’t ‘well I suppose the Green New Deal is a good idea’, the takeaway should be ‘have I understood the content of certain proposals; have I been needlessly motivated against proposals merely because of its (perhaps unwarranted) associations’. I fear that those who perceive this as propaganda for the Green New Deal, or as tactical framing itself, have either misunderstood the video, or are needlessly motivated against the Green New Deal. I say this as someone removed from US politics (therefore, as a foreigner, not the target of, or exposed to, these media segments) and someone who does not know the contents of the Green New Deal, and so whether it is or is not a good or bad idea, seen as this is not important to this video.

SUBSTANCE: "Global Warming" is based on computer models that use the General Circulation Model, which is an iterative (steepwise) method that beaks the model into small increments of time. The problem is that the estimation variance of the variables projected blows up! This means that whatever value the models derive is worthless! How do we know? Because "climate scientists" either refuse to discuss the estimation vsriances of their computer models or the have no idea what it even means! So before you start discussing how the GND is being discussed you need to understand what a scam the Global Warming meme really is!

Sarah Haugh exactly. Sims don’t do very well when they can sim right in the first place. Also... co2 is heavier than air, so the concentration is more on the ground then up in the atmosphere. So how can that cause global warming. But we must also remember that before all this, they said too much co2 in the sir would cause global cooling. I have looked at temp data from the past hundred years. There is no significant change.
@darksideblues135

Mr Penguin maybe localized pollution would be better. But how can the leftist raise our taxes if LA is polluted and Pullman Idaho isn’t. The sun changes our climate. That’s where most of it is coming from. There is no way that 460 parts per million of co2 will cause mass devastation. We are taking something very small. Did you know, recently, all the planets in our solar system got a little warmer? That’s because of the sun. Our contribution is negligible. Now, what id like to see government money go to is planting programs. Hire people to plant trees and other things. But ultimately that’s not what global cooling... warming.. or whatever is all about. It’s about guilt and scaremongering to allow more taxes to be stolen from us. It’s crony capitalism and it’s theft. Name he one thing the government has done to combat climate change..,
