As a fan, I’m sorry you don’t like the game.. Your view on We Happy Few is pretty interesting and you have some valid points. I feel like the cod liver oil mission was far too tedious, but I can’t say I’m the most patient person either. As for the Nick Lightbearer quest, I didn’t do the quest. I didn’t know it was a quest, but I guess I dodged a bullet because that Simon Says activity looks annoying. I see why you say the logic is faulty, but I think it’s the circumstances that made the developers not touch it up, maybe. Like when Arthur didn’t save his friend. It is messed up and kinda odd, but maybe it’s like that since the world is a kill or be killed type. I agree that the running and outfit changes are annoying. Usually I don’t change my outfits because I don’t see the point, and I saved up my experience points for the silent/unnoticeable running at the beginning of Sally’s act. It was the first upgrade I bought. I don’t get the logic of them getting angry over running at all, honestly. Kids run happily while playing tag... As for bugs, I feel bad that you had so many. I started playing May of 2020, and I only ran into 3 bugs during Arthur’s Act, 1 in Ollie’s and none in Sally’s. I am probably 3 or 4 hours into Ollie’s Act/Act III. I feel like Arthur’s act just wasn’t touched on much in updates, Sally’s act seemed so polished and I didn’t run into any problems. Once again, I’m sorry you didn’t end up liking the game. It does have amazing potential, I agree with that. I just thought I’d touch on it a little too 😅 I respect your opinion and I’m glad you touched base on some of the issues of the game. I hope you enjoy any future games you come across 🙂

This review is correct in every point it makes. I have to say that strangely, I still love the game. I can't play it all the time because I don't always have the patience, but when I do, I quite enjoy it. I am currently on Act II and it seems that Sally's story is much less tedious as far as missions go. It does have a lot of walking, and to be honest, it didn't bother me at first but now, after 30 hours of gameplay, I start to hate the fact that the waypoint is always always faaaar from me. It does get tedious. Especially the Garden District requires an insane amount of travelling, but at least you can sprint there. :P The strength of the game is the story and the environment. Too bad there aren't more NPC models and lootable houses.

I got it for $6 bucks on Xbox, it's not a terrible game, worth 6 bucks. My only advice is do NOT spend time looting everything not nailed down. Grab things as you go but don't go on looting sprees. You'll amass a warehouse full of items only to suddenly hit the end of the act and it was all for nothing, especially as there's no end of act boss or anything that requires lots of loot. I literally could have done 90% less looting than I did and been fine.

This game would have been better as a propper immersive sim and less procedural survival. So much potential. And honestly, it's aggravating seeing a good game that could have been. It does have its charm though, I can't deny that. I'm currently on act 3 with Ollie, I like the story, that's usually enough to push me through a game, but this one has so many moments of buggery that I'm more annoyed than anything else. So many broken mechanics that feel like an afterthought where the devs were like "it sort of works" and were done with it. It's a shame, but one of the weird things is I kinda want to play the DLC of the game. Mostly because you get to play as some of the more interesting characters from the main game. I wonder if the game could have been better being more "focused" and less procedural. Less open spaces and maybe have one or two hub-like areas. I would listen/watch a 4-hour podcast about this game, what works what doesn't. Anyway, fantastic channel you have here, I've already watched a good majority of your content, and can't wait to see more.

Well damn. So in the recent sale, I got the Season Pass/DLC for this game and I genuinely feel as though they are a lot better than the original game. They are a lot tighter in both narrative and gameplay, making them much more enjoyable than the main campaigns. Each one seems significantly better than the last too. They also feel a lot closer to an immersive sim style game like the original should have been. As well as not having to rely on RNG and random pickups.

I find the concept interesting, as it's functionally no different to many of the other Big Brother-style aspects of the game. The actor is pretty good, and the general atmosphere of it is fine. A lot of things about the game's world are really interesting, it's just the way the game is structured, its large and often empty world, and its poor performance that really brings it down for me. I think it would've been better if they stuck to the original goal of it being a linear experience, rather than open world. That's just my opinion though :)

Got it for $6 on sale. I really enjoyed it for a while until suddenly, as Arthur, it gave me the prompt that his part of the story was over. I realized I'd spent hours running around, looting everything in sight, amassing a treasure trove of materials, all for nothing. I then crafted tons of health items and the most powerful weapons, many of which I had never used, and stepped through the door, prepared to face his end game boss. No fight occurred and I literally just walked for a bit and it was over. This game had so much potential but just didn't realize it. Although I will say that while I experienced lots and lots of funny glitches, I didn't find many game breaking ones, and there were 5 (I think) fast travel hatches, not 2. So maybe the console versions are more stable and they added more fast travel hatches, I dunno. Also, why does this channel have so few subs? I'm surprised.

Kind of spoilers? I for one absolutely adore this game, has to easily be one of my favourites! I am aware it has glitches and such, but I personally thought the story and characters were amazing, the gameplay was fun and the artstyle was like a breathe of fresh air. It was something new to me...it had humour as well as a dark story with little details such as the couple commiting unalivement in one of the abandoned houses where the music starts off normal and then becomes distorted as you reach the top or the kid that was hiding back when the train left and the parents were writing him letters and bringing him food in secret. No trace of him. Gosh, I could go on forever...I think that people SHOULD buy the game for a myriad of reasons, but I also think that they need to be prepared for the glitches and to wait until the game and all of it's DLC is on sale- that is what I did. I got everything for about £13 and bear in mind, I had already played the whole game before on the game pass...I just enjoyed it so much I had to get it on such a ridiculous sale and as well as getting all of the DLC which I hadn't been able to play on the gamepass. Alright what happened in the game that made you so mad at it? I have 67 hours on it and I haven't seen a single glitch yet. Your complain about the cod liver oil mission is so unbearingly stupid. Would this make Skyrim a bad game for sending you in between cities to meet the thieves guild, because "in the lore" it says that the thieves guild is everywhere? Please understand, that if you could go anywhere in the game from the start, there wouldn't be a game :)
@JackTrustReviews3 жыл бұрын
This comparison doesn’t work, because my point about the cod liver oil mission is that you spend all that time getting the press pass only to be told immediately afterwards that it’s functionally useless. Skyrim has its problems as well, but travelling between places isn’t an issue because you can pay a paltry sum to the horse and cart bloke to go there and skip the walking anyway. Plus you don’t have to constantly change outfits every time you enter and leave a city, you’re not forced to walk slowly between the streets until you get the required expensive perk, and it is possible to complete many missions in Skyrim in multiple different ways, or complete them without even realising they’re important. Example - getting the stone tablet from the very first barrow dungeon before you go to Riverwood, only to realise that you just saved yourself a bit of back and forth when the shop owner tells you to go get it. My issue with WHF is how the game is supposed to be open world and gives you a whole lot of tools, but you can only complete its missions in the one specific way it wants you to. I’m sorry you think my issues with the mission structure is stupid, but the game literally has a side quest where an NPC sends you on a quest to make the suit of blending so that you can break into Verloc’s lab, but you can’t use the suit to break into the lab. You HAVE to use the press pass. It would’ve been nice to be given options for progression. I appreciate that you had no glitches - a few people have told me that they also had no issues. But I showed my glitches on screen, and they were persistent throughout my time with the game. I also paid full price for it at launch, which very much irritated me two years ago, so when I saw that the game was still broken for me, I was a little annoyed. I hope that explains it.

@@JackTrustReviews Truly sorry you have had such a trashy experience with the game. that's not the main issue, the writing and story are amazing and are the best parts of the game, the goal is to escape wellington wells, there isn't a main villain other than general byng in sally's story, with the others they were just burdened with the fake life complication, the annoying part of the game is the countless bugs and glitches and crashes, there are also texture loading difficulties and frame drops no matter how powerful your rig is

Its a good thing you stopped at Arthur lol. Because even though I ended up liking Sally's act in the end, it was incredibly frustrating at first and almost made me rage quit. You go from a maxed out Arthur with all perks/items and strength to a weak level 1 Sally with none of that. She has to be played completely different than Arthur and relies much more on chemistry crafting so it's a bit like being thrown to the wolves at the start. To top it off she is bad at combat, and has a baby you have to feed and change in between missions and will physically weigh down your carry weight the longer you take to get back to her. The time between feedings is absurdly low, so you'll literally be doing the mission required to get the milk to feed her and be unable to complete it because your motherly guilt is weighing you down while you get attacked trying to steal records for the guy who will give you the milk. I ended up getting the hang of it but my god it was terrible for a while.

I did play the first half hour of Sally's campaign but I just really disliked her as a character, so I had to stop. She drove me crazy!

dam this video is really driving everyone from this great gem of a game I recommend you play it yourself before making up your mind,because I find the game quite addicting and intruiging,but there is some pretty valid points also made in the video but I dont think the little issues ruin the whole game experience,just play for yourself only then can you really have an opinion on it,oh and if you have xbox game pass you can download it for free ;)

pretty intelligent review but if I can get it for cheap I'll still play it I love the concept and it seems like it has its own soul
@JackTrustReviews3 жыл бұрын
There are parts of it I truly think are interesting, and if it weren’t for my issues with the bugs on PC, the mission design or how barren the world can be, I would be happier with it. For how cheap it gets these days, it’s less of a dent in the wallet than it was for me on launch day though, so if you can have some fun with it, might as well give it a shot!

this game was beyond frustrating at times, but overall I enjoyed the concept, the art, the world, and the story. Overall I would give it a solid 6.5/10

Not gonna lie. Only just started playing this today. Just finished that joy quiz thing mission. And I get it. Its hella janky. Enemies doubling up. Bad animation's. The bad and fourth. But I mean. Its kinda keeping me interested with the concept behind it. It gives me a fallout (looting), dishonored (throwing bodies, combat) kinda vibe

I understand you did not like this game, I myself think it is not broken, but we are all different. Let people play what they want, but thanks for your info. I have had the game for about a year and on Sally's part. But I have been busy too much to play a lot.

if there weren't sonic 06 tier loading screens or force crashes I could keep calm about all else. That said- I'm a molten mess looking to vent because of how broken this game is.

I downloaded the game and plalyed it for like few hours. I cant judge the game because I find myself playing it and dont know why I'm playing it at the same time, for me it just seemed super boring. Its not a bad game anyway I would say play this game if you have nothing else to do or just want to take a break from other games.

My thoughts exactly... I didn't even bother finishing the "cod liver oil" quest. The gameplay and world is just so god damn bland. It's such a shame because the game had so much potential, but at least I only paid $15 for it. I agree with every single point you make. Another huge issue is that crafting is such a big part of the game, yet so useless. This statement only based on Arthurs part of the game, but I can count on one hand the amount of times I actually had to craft something using a workbench or chemistry station. Most items are found in abundance all around the world (with the exception being sewing kits), so there is literarily no reason to craft anything. The game also lacks consequences. At least Dishonored bothered adding a minor change in the world depending on whether you were a killing machine, or a sneaky ninja. In WHF there are absolutely no consequences to anything. Murder the whole village? Sure, not a single person cares about the bodies floating around in the streets anyways. Sneaking around is way more fun, but why bother when it's much faster when you can just murder every witness and not face a single consequence. And them not even bothering fixing any of the many mistakes in this game, so many years after the official release, just ensured I will never buy another game from this studio. Anyways, great video and "review" if you can call it that. Very enjoyable!

Games that weave the narratieve with in-game choices deserve praise but what remains of your critique beyond that is: 'this game is not the game I want'. I enjoyed a lot of the quests. The survival and stealth mechanics, combined with the wonderfully developed world, sells.
@JackTrustReviews3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed the game, and yes, I agree that this is not the game I wanted, although having said that I never really had a horse in this race as I didn't back the kickstarter. I just enjoyed the trailers and the aesthetic enough to buy it. That said, a lot of my problems with this game are more to do with the fact that it is still incredibly broken. A lot of folks have told me they had no real issues, which is great, but there are a lot of people who do have plenty of glitches, including myself. I've played this game on three different computers and it is still glitchy as hell. Also, I have to disagree with the stealth mechanics - the fact that you can run around a corner and jump into a bin or a box that is literally the only thing you can hide in and nobody thinks to check it is not great, in my opinion. It's hardly MGS levels of stealth. But it really depends on what you want from a game like this. Anyhow, thanks for being courteous and engaging. I think I struck a nerve with this video!

Only Pathologic could surpass this game's tediousness. Though that game was designed to be deliberately painful to play, whereas We Happy Few was just not designed very carefully (not well translated from linear to open-world).

sorry i didn't watch the full video before i notice you point out a lot of glitches and problems in the game which i have seen before but i still like the game not because of the story or the characters but because of the most of the time good scenery and the Ollie quest,which i know you didn't cover for reasons,i also like how it contains cool side quest sometimes,unlike the light bearer side quests,like the pirate dog one but opinions are opinions so its fine to have differing opinions because thats what makes us all human and yes i said that.
@JackTrustReviews3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate you being honest about not watching the full thing, thank you :) But yes, absolutely! We're all human, we all have differing opinions. Plenty of people have agreed and plenty have disagreed with me, which is totally normal. I enjoy the discussion around games in general, but I definitely prefer it when folks like yourself who disagree but are polite about it, rather than just insulting people they disagree with. So thank you for being civil, it is very much appreciated!

I agree with nearly all your points. I bought the game sometime in 2020 or maybe very early 2021 and I just couldn't finish it, or even get close to finishing it. I think I was drawn in by the design and atmosphere of the game from trailers, I think I was hoping it would potentially be a less action orientated Bioshock. There was a lot of talk about this game by the "games media" before it hit early access, again I think because of it's style and presentation. Unfortunately there's really nothing here that makes it a fun or enjoyable game. It's dull and just not well made at all. It just adds to the pile that makes me distrust "video game journalism". KZbin creators (outside of LetsPlay shills) seem to have the most authenticate and trustworthy take on games. It's a shame that means you normally have to play the games 6months-12months after they come out to get the really good impression videos.

Just because you set a story in an alternate dystopian England post WWII with an evil deceptive government doesn’t make your game intelligent. I promise you as soon as you understand any of the three character archetypes and the ultimate goal they work towards you can easily walk yourself through their exact plot lines and endings because they’re that cliche. That being said the game looks pretty, and my ultimate favorite part is the killer soundtrack. But crashing with absolutely zero warning at least once every 3-4 hours is such a dealbreaker.
