The best defence against knives is an ancient technique called Ru-n. It's a technique created by the early humans when facing threats too powerful. To perform this ancient technique you first must allign your feet in the opposite direction of your enemy and place one foot in front of the other as fast as you can and then you just continue repeating the motion. Now you have performed Ru-N and succesfully defended against all strikes from your opponent.

On top of that, they also seem to forget that the knife attacker is also still capable of punching, kicking, headbutting etc. So even if the defender did manage to control the knife hand, the attacker can still swing round and punch them in the face (and then stab them again afterwards for effect).

Guro Dan Inosanto, Master Guro(teacher) of Filipino Martial Arts, and Sifu(teacher)of Bruce Lee's 'Jeet Kune Do', has an old 1980's video of different scenarios where a cop or security guard approaches a burglar who is carrying a knife, and in 99% of the altercations they demonstrate, the burglar was able to slash/stab the cop before he could get a shot off or even draw his gun, in some cases. No cuts, no fancy changing the grip on the weapon. He demolished us. He told us "If the guy points the knife at you with his arm outstretched, you got a chance to win. When learning knife fighting techniques with my dad (he trained people in self defense in the military or years) he said the best way to defend yourself is by letting you arms take the brunt of the damage. Even if an artery is cut you still have a good 2 minutes or so to disarm you assailant and pinch the artery. But most knife fighting techniques are actually much more effective against a gun rather than a knife.

Hi everyone! I was corrected at one point by a few people in terms of the chest area being non-vital. Bruno Orozco actually said in the conversation that with enough power it may be pierced through to the hear and lungs. I realize it's my mistake to have not included this part of the conversation. Another user also spoke about a nerve on both lateral sides, near the pecs, that runs along the abdomen wall that when cut, can cause lose of arm control of that side. While this is new information for me, it makes sense. Improvised weapons also did not come up in the conversation, which was suggested by some viewers in the comments. You also didn't mention the legs. If your Femoral artery is cut you can bleed to death in seconds. I would say that's pretty vital. You can get the Femoral artery attacked kicking at the wrong moment. Also cutting the Brachial artery in the upper arm can be just as bad.

I got stabbed (head), while trying to deescalate a fight in where my best friends where involved. The attacker stabbed me from behind, while I was trying to talk scenes into the guys about to fight. When I turned around I saw the guy with the knife, directly trying to stab me again (rapidly). There was no clear “stabbing pattern” that I could’ve encountered. Leaving me only with the option of gaining distance for the ability to make a run for it. The guy chased me. At the same time, my head started to bleed like hell. I ran into a bar, graben a chair, and kept my focus on the door (as soon as the guy with knife would enter, I’d knock him down). The lesson from this. Most encounters happen at night in state of influence. And believe me, Ive trained for many years martial arts, but when it comes to knives. Know this “a blade is always stronger then flesh”.

@josboersema13525 жыл бұрын
Yes that's very true I think. I was holding my swords and imagined one of those moronic extremely hard prison gang monsters from America was wanting to kill me but not being armed, and it seemed to me that what I should do is immediately attack as hard as I could, while keeping the edge weapon between myself and the enemy, so no fancy swings that might give an opening but just short hard attacks on whatever is nearest of the enemy (ideally first the arms/hands to give an very deep cut in one or both, than continue until the torso/head can be attacked). The reason for the theory would be that I do not want to give that person the time to pick up a chair, or to do one of those rush-in wrestle things. Keep the weapon between yourself and the other person, so that if they want to rush in they just dive in the blade. They are welcome to it.

@@OnlyKaerius I imagine that you are right. It better be a thick jacket, ideally with leather. Might be enough for a few defensive moves until you get hurt or can run. Good video. Can’t be spread often enough. There is, however, one point that is not correct. There are no non-vital areas and calling the chest non-vital is a big mistake. If you follow the news you will see that most knife deaths are due to heart and lung punctures. Especially heart punctures are extremely deadly due to something called cardiac tamponade, where the bleeding effectively stops heart motion within a few minutes and less. Collapsed lungs are also life threatening. The muscles and the rib cage offer good protection against blunt damage but stabs will go through as the will be directed between the bones by the round structure of the ribs. In contrast you can easily survive several stabs to the abdomen (you can, not saying you will), whereas most stabs to the lungs and heart are immediately life threatening. So not protecting your rib cage is a death strategy against a knife. Also the outside of your arms and legs is definitely less vital but still far from not vital. Next to the muscles that direct the extension of the hand and fingers also the radial nerve is running there. A few slashes can easily make your hand function go down to zero limiting your ability to properly defend and then you are dead as well. So, please understand that there are no non-vital areas. Just fucking dangerous and a bit less dangerous areas and the rib cage is a fucking dangerous one.

Also I think there are a couple of things I think are important to note: You might not see the knife before you feel it. Not everyone brandishes their weapon or threatens with it first. Arguably the guys with the worst intentions don't. Any object you can use to keep distance can be of great help, if you have time to deploy one. I'd rather cane someone's knife hand rather than try to grab or slap it. Sparring knives that leave a mark of paint/makeup seem like a good idea. In all seriousness I really appreciate this excellent, well-presented tutorial with no hyperbole or gravitas, this sort of thing is very valuable to me as I'm a 95lb 5'0" female who is particularly disadvantaged in any physical confrontation. I always feel the best approach is to rehearse your standard checklist as though you were troubleshooting any problem, with the easiest and most reliable solutions first (run; if running is impossible, create distance; if distance is limited attempt to minimize the damage) and only when all other options are exhausted do you actively fight back. Krav maga has its issues but I found this aspect of their training to be very practically useful. The sad reality is that armed or not, trained or not, I am much more likely to be killed or seriously injured if I were to practice any of the more popular "proactive" techniques.

Got an 8' scar on my forearm from a knife attack deployed in Iraq. Cqc against an Al Queda soldier in 2010. Sweep & clear in a dilapidated building south of Taqrit. Cleared the door and he was on me faster then I could shoulder my rifle. Too close for my squaddy to take a shot withour risking hitting me. He slashed down from 12 to 6 at my face, and all that was in the way was my left arm, so I shield with the top of my forearm. Knife cut right through the fabric of my uni and fell just short of the interior arm. Managed to push him back after his slashing arm was down, and my squaddy took him out. Thank goodness he slashed at that distance and not stabbed...as I'd be dead right now. Could I have shoulder my weapon and fired after the initial attack? Yes. But within 6 feet of my attacker that'd be too risky. He'd still be able to attack faster then I could ready my rifle or draw my sidearm out. My best option was what I did, use my free hand to shove off of the guy creating space, allowing my squad mate a clear shot to end the engagement. Don't try to be a hero. Where an edge weapon is concerned, you're gonna get cut.

Thanks for this video and honesty. This is the truth, there are no techniques to get out from a knife attack unarmed. A young boy with black belt in martial arts, son of an ex-police officer got killed recently in Lisbon trying to defend himself from an attacker with a knife, trying to be a hero instead of running away got him dead.
You would be surprised how easy it is to just to break through ribs with a medium to large knife and even pierce through certain places in skull, like temporal bone and eye sockets, i`ve tried this with a pig carcass and head, it really doesn`t take a lot of force. And most of the times, if you hold your knife edge horizontally it would just bypass the ribs. To say that chest area is not vital is a critical mistake, and anyone who tries to claim this obviously didn`t even tried to work with real steel on meat and bone. And why are leg area and thigh artery specifically not mentioned at all ? It`s like a finger in diameter, and getting stabbed there is almost as bad as getting stabbed in artery on the neck. This video has a lot of work to do until it`s more or less true to reality. The direction is right overall, but there is a lot of work to do still.
@christophedlauer14436 жыл бұрын
Compared to the Abdomen, groin or insides of your arms - the chest and skull are -relative- well protected. Sure - with a clean swing and a non-moving target, landing a potentially lethal hit in these area is not too difficult. The problem comes with switching from a dummy target to an active defender. The attacker has a better chance of success with quick stabs and cuts - alternating and switching so he can't be disarmed easily. A powerful thrust or jab is slower and easier to divert. Unless you are grappling on the floor - it is rather difficult to cut a person of your size on the legs while both of you are standing. It is far more likely that an attacker will go for your torso or face. I don't think anyone is making an argument that its nice to be stabbed in any area of our bodies - but given the choice to be stabbed in the neck or the chest, you would have to agree that protecting the neck would be preferable.
@Bladebrother6 жыл бұрын
I can show you video where a man is killed with one strike to the chest with a short knife and from sitting position. Actual, real video. I`ve tried to puncture through ribs both on static and hanging pig carcass, and as i`ve said - it`s not hard. There are plenty of videos that show just how easy it is. Especially when a blade is slipping through ribs. And unlike abdomen area, heavily damaged heart is almost guaranteed and instant death. So no, it`s as bad as getting stabbed in the neck, there is no better choise here. If we are talking about abdomen the liver is pretty bad too, but my research tells me that heart is much worse. There is also an abdominal artery, but it`s pretty darn deep. I know what i`m talking about because i`ve been practicing knife fighting for more than five years, and that includes training and sparring two or three times a week, research on actual cases of knife attacks and knife duels (which are really common in Brasil), and actual work with real meat and bone, as in case with clothed and handing pig carcasses. So i`m pretty confident when i say something, and chest area is really fucking vital and is easily punctured with a medium to a large knife with not much force. And we haven`t even talked about damaging aorta, clavicular artery and lungs. Damaged lung can cause pneumo and hydrortorax, although that is not nearly as bad as a strike through heart or aorta. So all and all - I stand my ground. The video falsely talks about chest area being non vital, as opposed to other areal like abdomen and neck, and that should be changed.

@@Mountainofcharm We don`t really practice machetes as no one uses them in our climate as everyday tool, axes are much more used as a tool. But we practice with and against heavy sticks which represent bats, metal bars, table legs etc. So i would say it`s kinda close enough since most of the machetes are rather for hitting and not stabbing or slashing as weapons. So, what do you need to do (and practice) if someone attacks you with either knife or something heavy that can crush bones ? First advice - fucking run, run like hell in the direction of the police. And this needs to be practiced too, since you need to outrun your opponent and prior to that may need to break free of him if he grabbed you. Can`t run for some reason ? Ok, if you are not grabbed yet and the opponent closes up on you than don`t just stand there with empty hands and arm yourself with something - sticks, stones, bricks, 2x4 or any tool like axe or shovel if you`re really lucky. So basically you need to get something that can incapacitate him and can make some distance with him. Strikes to the head and joints are preferred but most likely you`ll be striking wherever in such stress so just make it really vicious and don`t let him close. So you need to practice your heavy stick fighting against opponent with a stick as well against a guy with a knife. And finally, only if you see that none of the above are possible, and you don`t even have pepper spray on you or anything at all lying around you use empty hands against knife or stick. Well, in this case the only thing you can do is to grab an armed arm (which in the case of knife is really hard but possible) and by grab i mean a real proper grab with your whole arm and not just fingers, grab with fingers can be broken immediately. After you grabbed the arm with a knife\stick it`s either wrestling or striking techniques depending on what you know best. You either strike him until he is unconscious in which case boxing and muai-thai training is required, or you throw him (judo, free wrestling, sambo) and then break the arm, or if you`re really good at BJJ you can take things to ground and break his arm there. Either way it`s grab the arm with knife, then knockout or arm breaking. So, to summarize - practice knife and stick fighting against opponents that are armed equally or unequally to you, practice picking up what lays right next to you (you can do it by throwing random shit on the floor that can be used as a stick of thrown while you are sparring emty handed against armed attacker), practise...uhh, running! As silly as it may sound. And practice your striking and wrestling techniques, and there are plenty of schools that are really good either with knocking the shit out of people or breaking their bones. Sorry for such a big text, but I like to put everything on their shelves. And there are still so many topics and nuances that I haven`t really described here, but that be a freaking novel to write.

As a martial artist, the best summary of knife defense I can do (considering that running is not an option and distance is limited) is to stay as far away as possible, protect your vitals, avoid engagement and wait for your opponent to commit. A good knife user will usually start out with noncommittal attacks, meaning they are weaker but also leave the attacker less exposed. Usually it will be something like almost constant quick slashes in your direction, which prevent you from getting close. It's impossible to perform any defensive techniques against this. You have to keepp your distance. Eventually, your opponent will be forced to commit, meaning a stronger and more exposed strike, such as a big thrust or a wider slash. That is the moment where you quickly close the distance and perform whichever technique you prepared for this situation (you will usually train responses to specific attacks). These techniques are what we are usually shown in these self defense demonstrations. Than you just pray it works, because, as well trained as you are, chance of failure is high.
