Now, let's talk about the knife...
The truth is you may not even see a knife during a knife attack. Someone who knows what they're doing will probably conceal the weapon and attack without warning.
So, the first strategy to surviving a knife attack is to be aware of the people around you. Pay attention!
Second, control the distance between you and the attacker. If the bad guy can't get close to you, he can't stab you.
Third, watch the hands. If someone gets close to you and you can't see one or both hands, presume he's holding a knife.
Third, keep your hands up. You always want to put yourself in a position to attack first if necessary, block, or trap the weapon.
Fourth, prepare for a struggle. Don't believe what you see in the movies! As hard as you try to grab and control the knife, the attacker is going to fight to keep it. So, hang on and don't give up!
Fifth, pin the knife to either your body or to his body. You don't want to chase the knife as it it slashes and stabs. Trap it and pin it down.
Sixth, don't forget about improvised weapons. If you can pick up a chair, a book bag, or anything (!), and put it between you and the attacker, do it!
One more tip. If the thought of a knife attack terrifies you, that's normal! But to be more effective in self-defense, we need to address our emotions in addition to learning techniques. So, make some time to address your feelings about the knife. If you can make peace with it, you'll have a better chance of controlling it.

My dad has been in the military for 23 years, his knife instructor asked what do you do, he said run, everyone laughed except for the instructor he said that’s right you run because he’s ready to kill you, unless you are meaner than he is and are ready to get stabbed an cut to win you will die.

@@jareds869 I was in the Army. I didn't have a "knife instructor". As far as hand to hand and shit, in basic training they basically said don't expect to come out of here being able to kick peoples asses. All thats going to happen is someone who would have kicked your ass before will still kick your ass now, he may just have to kick your ass a little longer before you go down.

@@tsdobbi Yeah, that is the same experience I had in basic as well. I wish they would have done an introduction to a little BJJ or Judo throws. If your rifle goes down, or it gets grabbed when you are turning a corner, you need to have some hand to hand combat experience in order for you to get out of that situation alive.

@@tsdobbi I think this and any kind of martial arts training serves to make you more conscious in a fight when engaging. Instead of aimlessly punching and kicking you more aware and precise of your and the other person's actions... Which helps especially against someone who doesn't have any fighting background... Like boxers, military or martial artists...

in my country it is 'normal' in certain cities to take a knife with you when you walk in the streets, because there are these groups of teens from 12-20+ who are making it dangerous to walk over the streets, they are bringing a knife with them to defend themselves againts other groups or to rob other teens, yesterday a 14 year old got threatened on a soccer field with a knife and got robbed so now i am starting to learn how to defend against a knife attack, i can defend against someone without a knife like 1v1 but i don't know how to do it against a knife, i watched multiple videos ane visisted websites for help and am practising at home

Totally agree TenderGuitar...The bottom line is to always be aware of your surroundings. Especially when out for a walk with your family or coming out of a movie theater or a shopping center parking lot or in a bar or club. Also, when needed, you need to get into street mode or the "Street Thug" mentality. Holding belts in Aikido, Tang Soo Do, and various forms of street defense arts ie, Krav Maga, Mauy Thai, Kali (hand, stick and knife), for over 30 years, I learned one thing. Some of them work, and most do not in a street situation. The most important thing I learned aside from always being ready, even in the least concerning situations, your mental state is what will help you survive. Remember...A thug approaching you is out to humiliate, seriously injure or kill you. There will be no negotiating, and there will be no time for the fancy spinning back kicks, roundhouses, or flying helicopter kicks we all spent years learning in the dojos. Know and look for an opening of the 6 basic vital spots of the body, (eyes, nose, throat, soloplex, knees, and groin). Watch his hands and NEVER!!! "look eye" (as miuagi says). You already know he's looking at you. Should he invade your space, never hesitate or try to negotiate. There are no cameras or rules on the street, and this is definitely not a movie. This is survival. Strike First... and Strike Hard, then get you and/or your family to safety.

He was getting close to me and he was trying to shake my hand.but before I did I saw a pocket knife in his right hand he was hiding it behind his arm and once I saw that I froze for a sec. and I looked at him and he just smiled at me I backed up and started to walk away I started to walk backward so if he tried to attempt to do something ill just run away. I got my stuff and I left the park.lucky he didn't follow me and I left without a scratch.can't believe there are sick people who would do that.and to top it off I'm 16!and he looked like he was in his twenties. The 1-2-3 shouldn't be how you train all the time. In fact, it shouldn't be what you do when you're learning the basics - the basics should be blocking and evasion drills. Wrestlers and judoka use the 1-2-3 method! You can't question that it works! The reason though that they are able to spar the way they train is because they don't train exclusively with the 1-2-3 method. Let me explain. The 1-2-3 has its usefulness because it teaches you what to do if you are able to achieve a certain condition. For example, in wrestling, if you are able to successfully arm drag your opponent, you can use that to funnel to a get-behind, life your opponent, take him down to the mat, then pin him. That's a 1-2-3 method. That's excluding the possibility that your opponent can actively counter, but it includes the possibility that he WON'T counter - because let's face it, they don't always know how to counter. Wrestlers train in all sorts of different ways but they use it too, having wrestled in college, I can't deny that it does help build muscle memory. The same goes for knife defense. IF you are able to parry a knife stab, you can simultaneously strike him in the jaw with your other hand, then use that to funnel to a wrist control followed by a wrist lock. That is when we get to the most important part: the "IF". Obviously you can't count to 2 or 3 if you can't count to one first. Thus it is paramount in knife defense that you first focus on the 1. If you can't even consistently parry a stab, if you can't even consistently block a slash, then don't even think about fancy locks and disarms. It's just like in wrestling. You first learn how to sprawl. You first learn how to lower your center. You first learn how tie-up. You're not going to be taught any takedowns or throws until you master the basics. Can't run if you can't walk. Can't walk if you can't even stand. Start with the proper basics - first master blocking and parrying, then add in striking, then add in footwork, and only then think about doing 1-2-3s. This is the way we do it in the Filipino martial arts, and we know it works because our masters actually did fight with knives. (Knife dueling and carrying knives was completely legal here in the Philippines up until the late 80s.) I'd make a video, but my camera's not really working right, but I'm sure just by reading this, any martial artist can figure out what I'm suggesting. :)

A few years back I found myself in this exact situation, it’s not always possible to run away from an attacker if you’re caught off guard, you may freeze or an escape route may not be accessible without going around the attacker. If that’s the case, do not try fancy moves to disarm as some people say, this guy puts it perfectly you must attempt to control the situation. In doing so you might get slashed in arm or the hand as I did, but that certainly better than body or even neck! Top tip, if someone is mugging you throw your wallet or phone behind them, this will give enough distraction to make a quick escape - it’s not worth risking your life, stay safe.

I agree wholeheartedly. Although always not possible, don't allow an attacker into your personal space. Once they're close enough to use a knife, it then becomes more difficult to get to your gun since you're using your hands to defend. In the time it would take to draw your gun you could get stabbed or slashed repeatedly. Keep that distance at all costs which will give you the opportunity to draw your gun. If it gets to a close quarters situation, you need to go hard and fast and unrelenting. Rip their f'ing eyes out of their head. Groin, throat, knees next. But I'd certainly prefer to pepper spray and run as fast as possible.

Yes, you must get control of the knife hand and then strike while maintaining control of that hand...but it's important to know what type of strikes to use in this situation. Due to the risk of losing my channel in our politically correct environment, I won't elaborate on what kind of strikes are necessary, but perhaps someone else will. Just remember...it's not a fistfight that's being discussed here...you're fighting for your life. God bless.

A knife attack is vicious, brutal and MERCILESS. In order to have a chance to survive, the defender needs to at least match or surpass the level of brutality he/she is faced with. I say attack the attackers eyes by FEROCIOUSLY sticking your fingernails in to the attackers eyeballs. The sharp pain caused by your finger in the attackers eyes and his/her inability to see you, greatly increases the odds in your favour. However "FEROCITY" is the key essential for the deffender to succeed. A half-hearted defence is going to allways be a failure.

Best knife self defense video ive ever watched lmao, ive never been convinced whenever i see someone teach how to defend against a knife and demonstrate in a "number 1 do this, then number 2 do this, then step 3 do this" manner, now i do believe some of them will work effectively in specific scenarios like if the bad guy points a knife at you with no intent to kill but just to scare you so youd hand over your wallet, but if the bad guy has the intent to kill then this is the best video about knife defense in my opinion

From paying attention, positioning, concealment of the knife, to running not being the wisest thing to do etc. The only thing not mentioned is that if you're in a fight and someone pulls a knife you WILL get cut or stabbed unless you manage to outrun the fucker. It's a great starting position for punch defense as well, and it's the reason why Police Officers are always seen holding the shoulder straps of their plate carrier vests.

IMO "knife attack defense" is a misconception. A more accurate description would be "knife attack survival". Almost every preemptive strategy for fending off a knife attack doesn't work because practically all of them don't account for how such a scenario starts; the "defense" usually only begins after the attacker has already landed the first slash/stab, maybe even 2 or 3. By that time most people react by curling up into themselves trying to gain a little distance, with striking back or grabbing the attacker completely out of the question. The best defense is prevention through awareness, but one can't live their life in constant preparation for an attack. Better use of one's awareness would be realizing time is best spent on maintenance of one's health and fitness, along with maintaining a good personality. I don't have specific stats to back it up, but I'd still wager jerks get stabbed more often.

You have to understand that some people have no choice but to grow up in cities/towns like mine you can’t exactly up and leave when your 12. You learn to adapt to your surroundings best you can and hope things stay in your favor.

Super T Rev this adapting means watch where you eat and get gas/diesel in the daytime. These fuckers here killed raped and a hung a 13 year old girl in her own back yard... and the cops ain’t done shit and they know who it was. I’m tellin you some places don’t matter night club or not you ain’t safe on your own home. This is a city of only 100k people.

That is an excellent video guys my two favorite instructors, I truly now understand what Mr Drossos is saying about knife defense! I also understand why a couple of my instructors in the past wouldn't teach the knife defense in martial arts because they don't make sense and I pressure tested knife defenses 15 or so years ago and they failed because they were traditional knife defense in Tae Kwon Do that I learned! Well done guys and Thank you for exposing the truth and myths about actual knife defense!

I'd say many martial artists skip knife defense because it's so hard to look good! Important lessons we should all practice, though. Thanks for the comment!

I'm sorry, but watch active self protection lesson videos. It shows actual murders of all kinds and defense. And it can go either way. Basically Dominate that hand and keep away his leveraging Arm. Most stabs happen fast and the attackers use leverage. Counter and dominate that knife hand, go with everything you got. And you might have a chance.

I also watch active self protection and David is spot on. Deflect, dominate, distract being key but when it comes to knife attack its first and foremost awareness, watch the hands, keep distance, don’t let people close, run if you can, defeat leveraging arm. Fight for your life with everything. If ur very lucky you might survive
