Naming things is absolutely true. I opened a savings account and named it "The House I'm Praying For" and I haven't taken any money out of it since I opened it!

I've been saving $13.22 a month for a new phone. The category total so far is $381.81. I kinda love the specific savings amount down to the cents (tells my brain it's math, no more or less needed) and since the savings goal is for an item I use every day, I have never touched that category.

I won't save 10K this year because I'm busy paying off 10K and saving 6K.

Viewing savings as money I'm going to spend was how YNAB changed my life the most, I think. I used to have so much anxiety about spending my savings - but literally that's what I put the money there for. Just being forced to give things names (and not a name like "General Savings") has made such a huge difference.

I love this mindset! I've been using YNAB for a while and I save for all my yearly expenses like subscriptions or car insurance effortlessly, and it feels so good when the payment is due and you don't have to worry where that money will come from!

It’s hard because I do need $10k in a year! New roof next summer 😢 I have been feeling discouraged but then I remember I’m also a month ahead and saving for family vacation WHILE accomplishing this crazy savings goal. Sure, I wish I could spend that money on other things but can’t wait til I’m not worrying about my roof anymore!

😂 I've had YNAB for 6 years. I havent saved more than $500 in a given year. The cost of food, rent, and utilities went up so much to absorb and eliminate any savings that could have been. I have two jobs and a business. Laid off from Facebook in August. I'm taking care of two elderly parents who both work. ❤

Save doesn't always mean "put away in a savings account." It could also mean paying off debt or spending less on frivolous things in order to afford inflated grocery prices or care for growing needs of your family.

@@ladylove34 Agreed, but isn't the general conceit of this video, "Our people save an average of $6,000 in their first year?" I think my meaning was in keeping with the YNAB model of saving. The implication is that using YNAB allows you to "save" and be "several months ahead", but I just haven't managed that. I don't buy anything. Nothing frivolous. I cook two times a day and cook all lunches, snacks. Haven't got a coffee in three years (it's better at home anyway, French Press). Haven't bought shoes, clothes in 2 years. Learned to mend. More importantly, I apply to every part-time job and project I can to increase income, but it doesn't help. I have no car note. I do have student loans and small credit card debt (under $4,000), but it's the rent and the medical care for my mother with cancer and my father with diabetes which I have taken on in the past three years that has been the culprit. Life indeed happens, but we manage. I make over $178k, but it just doesn't go very far. I drive a 12 year old car which I love, but all in all. The luxuries I afford myself is just the occasional stationery item, journal, notebook. I am surrounded by people out here with Teslas and Cybertruck and $$$ exotic cars who don't work for a living, who are clearly taking the equity in their house and doom spending. That's never us. Good luck in the New Year everyone.

Did not know about the board game deals subreddit and now that’s why I’m not gonna save $10k. 😂

I've been unemployed since January, and if not for YNAB, I'd have been homeless in May. As it is, If I don't get a job I WILL be homeless in February. And canceling YNAB before it renews in March.😢

Huh. I wonder why YNAB deleted my post. I said that people won't save $10,000 this year, but would save much more than that. Odd that it was deleted.
