This is the thing I struggle with most in music production/mixing. People talk about struggling with vocals, but I've never had a problem there. But try as I might, I can't get good guitar tones. I especially struggle with distorted rhythm guitars. Things like clean arpeggios or lead lines drenched in delay are fine. But my rhythm tones always sound either brittle or muddy to me. And fake. Like you were saying, I've purchased way too many amp sims. And now when it comes time to record, I struggle to choose which to use. I tend to default to a Marshall with a humbucker guitar, but I still can't quite get it to sound the way I want.

Thats what im saying. Vocals are easy. Guitars are challenging. A big thing I learned about getting guitar tones is 90% of the time it's the rest of the mix, not the guitar tone. Though sometimes it is the guitar tone lol. Also! room is a huge part of the guitar sound too! What kind of music are you making usually?

@@mtchlrtoo indie rock, but there are definitely elements of alternative, punk, and metal as well. So I definitely have songs with palm mutes, for example.

@@rome8180 see for something like that I’d be using purely Amplitube and maybe some Archetype Cory Wong or Tone King Imperial, and staying away from super overdriven tones that are more filled with high frequencies than tonal frequencies. A lot of those heavy tones you hear are usually way less driven than you’d think!

Thanks for this, I've long been into striving for pure tones, the use of rooms etc I started with Amplitube as I found it the most realistic for getting the guitar natural sounds to come through, I have also used Softube Marshall Plexi which I find also realistic, but needs more effect input to get the room sound. Totally did not know about the mic rotation in Amplitube until this video. Can't wait to get home try this out. Great short, concise video. I'll be checking out your other content, it's nice to find no fluff, straight to the point info.

Actually your video makes me think about that I want to give up on all those amp sims for a while. My workflow is a mess and I tend to play around too much in the DAW. Before all that I used to drive to my practicing space where I have a Marshall that creates the sound I like. I put a SM58 in front of it, a few of my EQ settings, compressor presets etc. and that is enough, I get the tone that I like… I would love to have the flexibility of having 100 amps in my DAW but TBH I‘d trade 99 amps for one amp and therefore getting my creativity out there and my songs recorded ASAP.

Thats a great realization. It'll make you much better at recording as well.

Seems to me, in listening to isolated tracks used to recreate famous tones, more often than not the sound we all think is "one big guitar" on a famous recording, is often 2, 3, or more tracks blended. The individual tracks often sound terrible, one at a time, in isolation.

Ah I definitely needed this. What are your thoughts on the Neutron Audio speaker profiles (if you've seen them)? Trying not to buy any more plugins, but they look so damn appealing.

@@mattvdh I basically talked about how you should apply real life recording techniques to the digital workflow of an amp sim, because that will improve your workflow and tones as opposed to clicking around to different amps and pedals hoping for a tone that works. I can’t specifically tell my audience how to “make a good guitar tone” because there are millions of guitar tones, so instead I opt for teaching the audience how to make decisions based on what they are looking for. I don’t aim to sell an amazing one-size-fits-all tone that works for every song, because that doesn’t exist. What do you think I should’ve done instead to make this more valuable to you?
