There is never enough Arrangement tutorials. I believe it’s the reason n.1 why people don’t finish their songs.

Yes. I think the 2 by far most important skills to learn are 1. Sound Selection and 2. Arrangement. The problem with that is that those are topics that are in my opinion relatively hard to teach / learn. Doing a Synth Tutorial á la "turn this knob like that to get a sound like XYZ" is just easier, i think, and thus more popular in the tutorial bubble. I'm currently studying law in germany and through that something i always kind of knew got super obvious: Basic principles, abstract concepts and a deep understanding of the underlying system is what gets you somewhere... not detailed knowledge in certain niche topics (like, for example, designing sounds like artists XYZ). I find it really baffeling how little tutorials there are on stuff like that. I mean condensed, not bloated knowledge, just like in this video. When i started out long ago (i come from a guitar / metal backgrund and thus didn't have to start from the VERY beginning) the first thing i did was look up "how to make synths like Skrillex" or something. Nice to get started, i guess, but like... i didn't know anything about production in general, so whatever i made sounded like trash, really. But basic principles, abstract concepts and a deep understanding are really, really hard to teach, i think. But so, so incredibly important. You get tiny little pieces of info in a lot of tutorials from other people, but you need to consume hundereds of tutorials to get an overview and at that point you probably forgot most of those little tips... i know that because i did it that way. But then again, that was like 10 years ago or so and i think the whole music production thing got a lot more accessible because tutorials got a lot better. But stuff like "Here is exaxtly what you need to pay attention to to select a good kick. A good kick has these characteristica and is shaped like that. If you like the sound but the shape isn't good, here's how to form that kick into that shape." is so much more valuable. Same for synths, or any sound, really. Or, just like here, and overvierw over good arrangement practices.

These tuts are super helpfull, but you can watch milion arrangement tutorials and never finish a song, its a skill in its own that one has to practice. I finished most things when i imposed dead simple rule on myself, finish it or delete it before moving to next one. That really helped me to finsih tracks that was worth it and get rid of useless noise on my hdd at the same time.

I love the marble analogy! I end up with a lot going on in my tracks and it sounds like a mess of noise, but thinking about it more like magnifying certain parts of the track will help me so much when I make tracks now. Thank you for the helpful video as always!

Alice, love your content. Took up Music Production during the work from home due to Covid. It has been an amazing journey. I seemed to have this idea that I would make kind of a mix between alternative rock and trance. Something in the middle. But, its hard to invent the wheel when you have a full time job and cant dedicate to Music Production. Now I realize I have to stick to a genre format and be creative in the limitations this provides. After looking at Melodic Trance/Techno like Maceo Plex, I think I found my Genre.

Great video. My biggest problem is the 4th you mentioned. It is because I listen to my tracks soooo msny times that I get bored and decide to add more and more ideas but I refuse to make long songs 😅 I like petshop boys tracks like AXIS (crazy instrumental with 200 layers) or ROYKSOPP or old Depeche Mode and they tend to fill everything. My influences are not good for techno 😅

Thank you for the awesome videos I have a few questions if you have time please reply. When you are prepping for your Dj set do you belong to a pool where do you get your tracks? A Dj pool or do you use something like beatport? Baatport could be overwhelming how would you find the gems.? Where did you learn so much about production your pretty young but very knowledgeable. Do you recommend any vocal processor effects to make someone that can sing a little sound better maybe almost like a vocoder but not too processed? Cool effect like exhale but on. Mic channel as an effect .thank you

Thick Slavic accent + knows Way more than me = major turn on. I have the opposite problem: Probably ADHD but most things I produce constantly drift and change from bar to bar and always drift into multiple movements within a song. Dance music is out of the question. Critics sight my vocals and and such don't fall on the beat.I took a song and placed vocal events and instruments as close to the beat as I could. It sounded lifeless. End of THAT discussion. NOW I hear having so many genres (especially within the same song) isn't the best for emerging artists, rather than 1 focused sound. (sigh) 3 albums and 7 singles later I guess its too late to do something about that NOW. (shy grin) But boring it SELDOM is.
