I finally took that green hit, even though it’s later in the season, lol!!! My front yard was maintained at 3.5” and the rest was maintained at 4.5”. I got to the point that I didn’t like the way it felt when I would walk through when I’m out playing with my dogs. I also didn’t like how long my grass would retain moisture in the later mornings. So I scalped it all down to 2” to maintain at 2.5” for the remainder of the season. I can tell that it’s already starting to recover, even though it’s only been a couple of days.

‘As long as you keep it cut low’-BYD…you ain’t never lied. 😆Therein lies the challenge…most folks, including me, don’t walk that mower every 3 days…when Bermuda is surging…the HOC continues to raise up higher and higher…as the temps rise…to manage it during the heat…there’s an inclination to raise the mower height as the growth outpaces your ability to get out and cut it every 3 days…then when your grass growth begins to slow mid August or when temps drop in your area…& we’re cutting weekly…weekends only…the opposite effect occurs…you begin to take off more than 1/3…even lowering the blade in some cases…without realizing you’re chipping into the stem…which is brown. I’ve found that 1.5” - 2” is ideal for my Bermuda…over it’s green season…but I do tend to fall into the HOC trap…at the start of the season I’m around 1-1.5 and at the end of warm season growing cycle…I’m above 2”…due to either a few days of heavy rain…which promotes rapid growth…or to stave off the dreaded drought look…I’ll skim it so it doesn’t ‘look bad’ during hot/dry rain-less periods. And don’t go out of town for an extended period and think your Bermuda is going to wait for you to return without issue.🤣 So…I’m always doing the Bermuda height of cut dance dependent on weather (rain and heat) and my ability to get out and cut it. I think at some point during the growing season you may have to live with taking a green hit as it’s virtually impossible to know exactly where your height of cut ‘should be’ throughout the growing season? And even if you set it and forget it…the weather will influence what your Bermuda ‘looks like’ even under a DIY maintenance program.

@Twinski Bro, you worded it PERFECTLY!! You just outlined all of the challenges that occur during the summer and how most of us respond to them as well as WHY!! Feels good knowing I’m not the only one being challenged in these specific ways. The rain and the outpaced growth with the temptation to just skim for fear of taking a green hit is all REAL!!! 😰😂

That video was like the preacher talking to that one sinner in the congregation. I'm that guy with the 3" Hybrid and brown after a mowing at 3". My lawn is impossible to keep level so I keep raising the mower deck throughout the Summer. I definitely needed to watch this video. It's too late in the season to correct now, but next year I will not go any higher than 2". Lesson learned!!

Thank you for the informative video. I’ve been cutting my Bermuda Tiffgreen 328(?) at a height of 3/4” for a few years. I spent a good amount of time on setting up the lawn so It is level. When I first started cutting my lawn I thought something was wrong to see brown for a week or so....but I learned that this was normal. The top half would come in green later. I have maintained it by thatching and plugging it. Once in a while I spray simply lawn solutions 28-0-0 (nitrogen) and in 4 days it is beautiful!

Love it man. I just noticed this in my yard and couldn’t tell if it was fungus or what. This year I took over my church’s lot and it takes up a lot of my time so I’ve been letting my yard grow up to 4 or 5 inches before mowing it and then when I do it has a yellow undertone. What I’ve gathered from this video is that I need to scalp it to 1.5 inches one time, water it when it’s low and taking in sunlight and then mow it at 2 or 2.5 inches weekly to allow that sunlight to hit the stems lower down. You’re a lifesaver. Subbed.

I'm in a hot climate (Los Olivos, CA). We have a large field at the school and I'm just learning about grass. I think we have the Bermuda. Since the soccer field won't be used during the summer, and I don't care about the color, I was thinking about leaving it at 3.5 inches to keep moisture in the ground. We water three days a week (15,000 gallons per watering). Should I keep it at the 3.5 inches before soccer season (when I cut it down to 2.5) or will keeping it lower make it more dense which will help retain moisture. I'm a newbie but I have already learned stuff watching your video! Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.
